Though this thesis does not pretend to include all available material on this subject during Shakespeare*s time, yet I have attempted to utilise all significant material found in the prose writings of selected doctors, theologians, translated Latin writers, recognised Shakespeare sources (Holinshed, Plutarch), and other prose writers of the time? in a few poets; and in representative dramatists. Though some sources were not originally written during the Elizabethan period, such as classical translations and early poetry, my criterion has been that, if the work was published in English and was thus currently available, it may be justifiably included in this study. Most of the source material is found in prose, since this A medium is more suited than are imaginative poetry anl drama y:/h to the expository discussions of dreams. The imaginative drama I speak of here includes Shakespeare, of course. -

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - January 16, 2017 Alexander Elementary We’ve talked a lot about empathy and compassion in classroom guidance lessons. We want Alexander to be a place where kindness and compassion are evident everywhere, every day. MLK was a voice of love and compassion and he believed that respect and love were actions that should be shown to others. On Tuesday, January 17, we held a Gathering of Peace and Kindness in Martin Luther King Jr’s Honor at 1:30 pm in the gym. We did a Kindness March to commemorate the Freedom March, as we did last year. We also recited the school pledge, which also aligns with Dr. King’s beliefs. Each grade level memorized a section of the pledge that was read aloud. We also used MLK’s birthday to kick off a month-long Kindness Challenge. Submitted by: Salina Hemann, MC.GF Representative Borlaug Elementary Learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. Prior to January 13th, classroom teachers shared grade appropriate literature and activities about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These books were selected by our teacher-librarian. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, teachers shared with their students a created power point about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King., Jr. Service Learning Our School-Community connection was with the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in conjunction with the Children’s Miracle Network through Borlaug’s Mini Dance Marathon on January 13th. In January, our Borlaug Bulletin, parent newsletter, the service project was announced with the different donation opportunities to benefit the U of I Children’s Oncology Unit – see attached flyer. -

Board of Education 6 Teacher Lesson Plans and Resources 3 Civil Rights Act of 1964 4 Voting Rights Act (VRA) ABOUT THE MOVEMENT The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s came about out of the need and desire for equality and freedom for African Americans and other people of color. Nearly one hundred years after slavery was abolished, there was widespread 1 / 22 segregation, discrimination, disenfranchisement and racially motivated violence that permeated all personal and structural aspects of life for black people. “Jim Crow” laws at the local and state levels barred African Americans from classrooms and bathrooms, from theaters and train cars, from juries and legislatures. During this period of time, there was a huge surge of activism taking place to reverse this discrimination and injustice. Activists worked together and used non- violent protest and specific acts of targeted civil disobedience, such as the MontgomMontgomMontgomMontgomererereryyyy Bus BusBusBus Bo BoBoBoyyyycottcottcottcott and the Greensboro Woolworth Sit-Ins, in order to bring about change. Much of this organizing and activism took place in the Southern part of the United States; however, people from all over the country—of all races and religions—joined activists to proclaim their support and commitment to freedom and equality. For example, on August 28, 1963, 250,000 Americans came to Washington, D.C. for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. -

The Use of Short-Term Group Music Therapy for Female College Students with Depression and Anxiety by Barbara Ashton A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Music Approved April 2013 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Barbara Crowe, Chair Robin Rio Mary Davis ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2013 ABSTRACT There is a lack of music therapy services for college students who have problems with depression and/or anxiety. Even among universities and colleges that offer music therapy degrees, there are no known programs offering music therapy to the institution's students. Female college students are particularly vulnerable to depression and anxiety symptoms compared to their male counterparts. Many students who experience mental health problems do not receive treatment, because of lack of knowledge, lack of services, or refusal of treatment. Music therapy is proposed as a reliable and valid complement or even an alternative to traditional counseling and pharmacotherapy because of the appeal of music to young women and the potential for a music therapy group to help isolated students form supportive networks. The present study recruited 14 female university students to participate in a randomized controlled trial of short-term group music therapy to address symptoms of depression and anxiety. The students were randomly divided into either the treatment group or the control group. Over 4 weeks, each group completed surveys related to depression and anxiety. Results indicate that the treatment group's depression and anxiety scores gradually decreased over the span of the treatment protocol. The control group showed either maintenance or slight worsening of depression and anxiety scores. -

Abstract This qualitative study explores the mental health experiences of African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) youth in London, Ontario, investigating how the factors of race, gender, culture, and place have shaped their perceptions and experiences of mental health. The data collection and analysis were conducted using a phenomenological approach and a critical lens informed by feminist, intersectionality, and critical race theories. These data illuminate the ways in which these young people’s attitudes toward mental health and help-seeking strategies are impacted by broader social constructs and community expectations, which they navigate and often resist in their everyday lives. -

Dr. King, 1966, Chicago Solider Field Stadium as part of the Chicago Open Housing Movement Team HOC, I hope 2016 is off to a fantastic start! As you enjoy your day off or day of service in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I want to take the opportunity to acknowledge Dr. King’s housing work and legacy. Dr. King was among the most notable spokesmen for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement. His work in the movement successfully protested racial discrimination and ultimately led to monumental changes in federal and state laws. Many called for establishing a federal holiday in Dr. King’s honor almost immediately following his 1968 assassination. President Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in 1986 (three years later). It took 32 years for the holiday to be observed in all 50 states, which didn't occur until 2000. One of Dr. King's least acknowledged accomplishments is Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, more commonly known as the Fair Housing Act. -

Mexican Americans, Racial Discrimination, and the Civil Rights Act of 1866 Gary A. Greenfield* and Don B. Kates, Jr.*- The authors examine the legislative history of section one of the Civil Rights Act of 1866, scientific concepts of race and racial classifica- tions, state racial statutes and litigation, the early federal naturaliza- tion law, the perception of Mexican Americans in the Southwest, and the discrimination which the Mexican American has encountered. They conclude that Mexican Americans generally have been per- ceived as a nonwhite racial group and that the discrimination they have encountered has been based upon that perception. They fur- ther conclude that Mexican Americans are entitled to the protections of section one of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. Since the Civil War, Congress has enacted a number of statutes designed to eradicate various forms of discrimination. The earliest of these statutes was the Civil Rights Act of 1866.1 The first section of that Act read: That all persons born in the United States and not subject to any foreign power, excluding Indians not taxed, are hereby declared to be citizens of the United States; and such citizens, of every race and color, without regard to any previous condition of slavery or involun- tary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall have the same right, in every State and Territory in the United States, to make and enforce con- tracts, to sue, be parties, and give evidence, to inherit, purchase, lease, sell, hold, and convey real and personal property, and to full and equal benefit of all laws and proceedings for the security of per- son and property, as is enjoyed by white citizens, and shall be subject to like punishment, pains, and penalties, and to none other, any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, to the contrary not- withstanding. -
