RECORD OF GRAVES and MEMORIAL PLAQUES in CHURCHYARD

DECEMBER 2003

VOLUME 1

Volume 1 “Old Burial Ground” located immediately around Church

Volume 2 “New Burial Ground” located beyond path and steps on North side of Church

INTRODUCTION

Wembury Local History Society has been in existence for about 30 years. In 1975 the Devon Federation of Women’s Institutes General Education Committee in association with Jennifer Barber of the Standing Conference for Devon History published reasons and guide lines for recording tombstones in Church Burial grounds. With these guidelines in mind one of the first projects carried out by three founder members of WLHS, Dorothy Penhale (also a W. I. member) Leslie Penhale and Michael Arnold was the recording and location identification on a scale plan of all the graves and cremation memorial plaques in the "Old" Churchyard.

The extant Church Burial Registers start on 10th April 1611 so presumably people were buried in ground around the Churchyard from that date. Whether parishioners were wealthy enough to have memorial stones as early as that is unknown. The earliest recorded stone is 1707. It is known from the burial register that over the centuries a number of unnamed bodies washed up on the local beaches were buried in the churchyard but their location is unknown.

In spite of the rocky nature of the ground around the Church there was presumably enough top soil to bury for over 300 years but by the 1920’s space was running out.

In the 1920’s an appeal was launched to raise funds to erect the buttresses to support the wall around the Churchyard and to purchase the ground to the North of the Church which was subsequently dedicated and became known as the "New" Churchyard. By the 1980’s, apart from a few "reserved" plots the topsoil in the remaining area was too shallow to dig graves and so the Churchyard could only be used for the burial of ashes after cremation. Ashes and memorial plaques are now located in both old and new burial areas.

In 2003 the Society members agreed to make a record and plan of the "new” burial area and update the 1970’s record of the "old" area.

These two volumes are the result of that effort.
