The BMCs of Kerala has also been declared as Environmental watch groups by the Government of Kerala vide GO No 04/13/Envt dated 13.05.2013. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.

Surendran in Vayathur Village, Iritty Taluk, Kannur District – Extent 0.9268 Ha PRE-FEASIBILTY REPORT 1.0 INTRODUCTION OF THE MINING ACTIVITY K.K Surendran is proposing a (Building Stone) Quarry with permit at Survey No. 28/1A2 of Vayathur Village, Iritty Taluk, Kannur District, Kerala for an area of 0.9268 hectares. The proposed quarry area is hill rock. In most parts of the quarry permit area, the rocks are exposed and also the granite (building stone) exposures are present / bordering to the lease boundary proving the occurrence of the granite (building stone). The proposed quarry area is located at Vayathur, 23 km from Sreekandapuram and 45 km from Kannur. The highest elevation of the permit area is 435m MSL and lowest is 395m MSL. As the proposed area is hillock, the drainage of the permit area is towards southwest direction. No habitants are located in the permit area. The geological resources of granite ( building stone) in mining permit area are estimated to be 490343MT. The Blocked Reserves a nd Mineable Reserve of granite (building stone) in mining permit area are estimated to be 204506MT and 285837MT respectively. In the first five years of plan period, total 2,25,000 Tons of granite (building stone) shall be quarried/mined. The balance mineral reserves and part of blocked resources shall be quarried after modifying the bench design in next five year period. General Surface area is having well exposed granite rock, and it is having good market demand, therefore the permit holder proposes to produce building stone from this area.

Later it has established two Regional Chapters one at Thrissur and another at Kozhikode. One of the objectives of IFK is to undertake studies on topics useful in Forest Management. Accordingly the Project-“A Comprehensive Study on the Socio- economic and Cultural aspects of Sacred Groves in Kerala” was prepared and submitted to Kerala Forest Department in June 2012. This project was examined and discussed by the Kerala Forest Development Fund Research Committee in its meeting held on 18th August 2012 and was approved for implementation. The project envisages a detailed study of Sacred Groves (SGs) in all the districts of Kerala one by one. To start with Thiruvananthapuram District was allotted and IFK completed the study and submitted the report in November 2013.Subsequently districts such as Kollam,Alappuzha,Thrissur and Kozhikode were allotted. The study was completed and all the reports in respect of these five districts have been submitted. This is the sixth report now being submitted. M for M/S National Granite & Hollow Bricks is proposing a Building Granite Stone Quarry with Lease at Survey No.28/1A2 part of Vayathoor Village, Iritty(old Thaliparamba) Taluk, Kannur District, Kerala in an extent area of 2.5700 hectares. The proposed quarry area is dry private land. This is an operational quarry with lease. In most part of the quarry lease area the rock are exposed and also the granite (buil ding stone) exposures are present / bordering to the lease boundary proving the occurrence of the granite building stone. The proposed quarry area is located at Peratta, 60 km from Kannur and 15 km from Iritty. Part of the proposed land is already under m ining and there is no vegetation in that area. The remaining land in the proposed land is mostly covered with native trees, shrubs, herbs, grass, climbers, bushes etc. The highest elevation of the lease area is 210 m MSL and lowest is 170 m MSL. As the proposed area is hill rock, the drainage of the lease area is towards S & W. No habitants are located in the lease area. Old pits lies in the lease area are marked on surface plan. The geological resources of granite building stone in mining lease area are estimate to be 36,71,436 Tonns. In the first five years of plan period total 668474 Tons granite building stone shall be quarried/mined.
