Surendran in Vayathur Village, Iritty Taluk, Kannur District – Extent 0.9268 Ha PRE-FEASIBILTY REPORT 1.0 INTRODUCTION OF THE MINING ACTIVITY K.K Surendran is proposing a (Building Stone) Quarry with permit at Survey No. 28/1A2 of Vayathur Village, Iritty Taluk, Kannur District, Kerala for an area of 0.9268 hectares. The proposed quarry area is hill rock. In most parts of the quarry permit area, the rocks are exposed and also the granite (building stone) exposures are present / bordering to the lease boundary proving the occurrence of the granite (building stone). The proposed quarry area is located at Vayathur, 23 km from Sreekandapuram and 45 km from Kannur. The highest elevation of the permit area is 435m MSL and lowest is 395m MSL. As the proposed area is hillock, the drainage of the permit area is towards southwest direction. No habitants are located in the permit area. The geological resources of granite ( building stone) in mining permit area are estimated to be 490343MT. The Blocked Reserves a nd Mineable Reserve of granite (building stone) in mining permit area are estimated to be 204506MT and 285837MT respectively. In the first five years of plan period, total 2,25,000 Tons of granite (building stone) shall be quarried/mined. The balance mineral reserves and part of blocked resources shall be quarried after modifying the bench design in next five year period. General Surface area is having well exposed granite rock, and it is having good market demand, therefore the permit holder proposes to produce building stone from this area. Semi-mechanized opencast method shall be adopted, forming suitable benches. The anticipated life of the quarry is 5 years expected. 19 Granite (Building Stone) Quarry of K. K. Mobile no: 94470 38315 Applicant Email:[email protected] 1.3 NEED FOR THE PROJECT AND ITS IMPORTANCE TO THE COUNTRY OR REGION The major essentiality of building stone is based on its extraordinary compressive strength and durability. The proposed mining project will accomplish its requirement for the construction of buildings, bridges, paving, monuments and many other exterior projects. Polished slabs and tiles are usually used in countertops, flooring, retaining walls and landscaping around a center fountain/ pond, staircase and many other design elements (residential and commercial applications). It is also known as the maintenance-free stone. Small part of Gross domestic product GDP will be contributed with this mine mineral granite to the state exchequer. The employment opportunities are being created in connecting with the quarrying activities and the local people are being employed for the non technical activities under the direction of 21 Granite (Building Stone) Quarry of K. K. Surendran in Vayathur Village, Iritty Taluk, Kannur District – Extent 0.9268 Ha mining engineers and supervisors. These quarry operations more than 12 persons are being deployed which generates ample opportunities for those peoples indirectly. Applicant will pay royalty for the mineral produced from the mine, direct and indirect taxes will be paid thereby contributing to the regional revenue. The public revenue will further be put for infrastructural development and other sectors like health, education and social welfare. 1.4 END USE (DOMESTIC/ EXPORT MARKET) The rock is not suitable for using as dimension stones, but can be used as ordinary building stones, road metal, and rubble of ballasts after breaking into irregular pieces by blasting and breaking or otherwise as low value item like rubble, aggregates or other building mat erials. 2.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION 2.1 SALIENT FEATURES & ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING OF THE PROJECT Particulars Details Total Mine Permit area 0.9268 hectares Local name of the project Kolithattu area Production 57,000 MTA Life of Mine 5 Years Estimated project cost Rs. 25 lakhs Man Power 12 Highest and lowest 435 m MSL&395 m MSL elevation Land use PattaLand Nearest habitation About 101.1m Nearest town Iritty-16km Stone Crusher & M Sand Five Star Granites,Kolithattu 22 Granite (Building Stone) Quarry of K. Design: Shinelal Published by Kerala State Biodiversity Board, Thiruvananthapuram 2 FOREWORD Kerala is the only state in India where Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) has been constituted in all Panchayats, Municipalities and Corporation way back in 2012. The BMCs of Kerala has also been declared as Environmental watch groups by the Government of Kerala vide GO No 04/13/Envt dated 13.05.2013. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.
