Geografowie polscy In memory of Wincenty Pol, a great poet and the father of modern Polish geography, the founder of the Chair of Geography at the Jagiellonian University (1849), the first one in the Republic of Poland and the second one in the world, on the 200th anniversary of his birth. Polish Geographers Wincenty Pol. Akwarela 1849 mal. Friedrich Lider. (Zbiory Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności w Krakowie) Wstęp W 2007 r. przypada rocznica 200-lecia urodzin Wincentego Pola. Ten wielki polski patriota, humanista, geograf i poeta urodził się 20 kwietnia 1807 r. w Lublinie. W 1849 r. utworzył w Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim pierwszą na ziemiach polskich, a drugą na świecie Katedrę Geografii. Zainicjował ćwiczenia terenowe ze studentami geografii, rozpoczął systematyczne badania geograficzne w Karpatach. Uważany jest za „ojca” nowożytnej geografii polskiej. Był jednym z twórców polskiego krajoznawstwa. Doceniając rolę Wincentego Pola w rozwoju polskiej geografii i polskiej literatu- ry Uniwersytet Jagielloński oraz Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej postanowiły uczcić tę doniosłą rocznicę organizując dwie konferencje naukowe: geograficzną w Krakowie (2006 r.) oraz literaturoznawczą w Lublinie (2007 r.). Honorowy patronat nad tymi zgromadzeniami objęli: Jego Magnificencja Rektor Uniwersytetu Jagielloń- skiego prof. dr hab. Karol Musioł oraz Jego Magnificencja Rektor Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej prof. dr hab. Wiesław Andrzej Kamiński. Istotnej pomocy przy wszelkich pracach organizacyjnych udzieliło Muzeum Wincentego Pola w Lublinie, kierowane przez Panią mgr Grażynę Połuszejko. W dniu 21 marca 2006 r. Komitet Nauk Geograficznych PAN podjął decyzję o ogłoszeniu roku akademickiego 2006/2007 Rokiem Wincentego Pola. Zostanie on zainaugurowany konferencją w Krakowie pt. Wincenty Pol jako geograf i krajoznawca. Oddawane do rąk Czytelnika wydawnictwo zawiera teksty wystąpień, które Autorzy przygotowali na tę właśnie konferencję. Obecna publikacja stanowi pierwsze od kilkudziesięciu lat wydawnictwo, w którym podjęto próbę podkreślenia znaczenia Wincentego Pola jako geografa, badacza i krajoznawcę. Dotychczasowe tego typu opracowania ukazały się jeszcze przed drugą wojną światową (zwłaszcza prace Stanisławy Niemcówny) lub bezpo- średnio po jej zakończeniu (Henryk Barycz)1.     Adolf Juzwenko Ossolineum. 200 years with the people in search of their way to independence In the 1790s, count Józef Maksymilian Ossoli ński was in Vienna, seeking support for patriotic initiatives intended at preventing the collapse of the Polish state. Because it turned out to be impossible to prevent, Ossoli ński decided he should engage himself in the protection of national identity, historical memory and the will of the people to remain themselves. The family establishment of the Ossolineum Library, presented by the count to the emperor of Austria on 18 October 1816, was approved on 4 June 1817. It was indeed a success – after nearly twenty years of attempts, taken during various conflicts tearing Europe, Ossoli ński managed to give his compatriots an institution which proved to be increasingly successful in supporting Polish resistance against forced Russification and Germanisation. At the turn of the 20 th century, the arrangement of political powers in Europe had changed radically. When the Institute celebrated its 100 th anniversary in 1917, Europe had been at war for three years. The conflict continued between powers divided into two camps – Triple Entente and Triple Alliance. On the Eastern front, Germany and Austria-Hungary struggled against Russia, on the Western one – France and Great Britain fought against Germany. All parties were exhausted by the conflict, the armies – demoralised by Bolshevik propaganda. Eventually, United States' involvement determined the fate of the war. The chances for deep political changes in Europe grew. Nations of Europe, previously deprived of sovereignty, had begun to reach for independence. When the war ended, on 11 November 1918, Poles had begun to build their own state.

History, 2020, vol. 65, iss. 1, pp. 297–309. https://doi.org/10.21638/11701/spbu02.2020.117 The eastern frontier of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is referred to in the Polish lan- guage as the Kresy. The geographical extent of this area changed with the shifting borders of the Polish-Lithuanian state and, after 1918, of Poland alone. At the time when modern Polish na- tional consciousness was being shaped, it denoted the Russian territory known as the “western provinces” (gubernias).” Beginning with the mid-19th century, the Kresy were primarily a con- cept of the Polish political vocabulary that referred to an axiological space. The dispute over the area took the shape of a cultural and civilizational confrontation between two projects, those of imperial Russia and Poland. This article presents the Polish perception of the Kresy mostly as an imagined, not a real area. In the author’s view, in order to explain it one has to employ categories of memory studies. The conflict over the Kresy took place when Polish national consciousness was being formed under the influence of Romanticism. This led to the permanent inclusion of Kresy mythology and to the conviction about the existential nature of the conflict with Russia in the Polish memory. The existence of the Kresy as a historical phenomenon ceased with the end of the Second World War.

    CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by St Andrews Research Repository The Russian Okrainy (Oкраины) and the Polish Kresy: Objectivity and Historiography1 Tomasz Kamusella University of St Andrews Abstract: The Russian term okrainy and the Polish concept of kresy tend to refer to the same spatial area, or the non-Russian and non-Polish nation-states that after the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union extend between the Russian Federation and Poland. From the late 19th century through the interwar period, both the terms okrainy and kresy underwrote the Russian and Polish territorial expansion and the mission civilisatrice in these areas, most visibly exemplified by the policies of Russification and Polonization, respectively. Frequently, Russification was compounded with the state-supported spread of Orthodox Christianity, while in Polonization’s case with that of Roman Catholicism. These two terms, okrainy and kresy, fell out of official use during the communist period, but resurfaced in Russia and Poland for a variety of ideologized ends by the turn of the 21st century, with little respect for the countries and nations concerned. Keywords: ‘civilizing mission,’ kresy, imperialism, nationalism, okrainy, Poland, Poland- Lithuania, post-Polish-Lithuanian states, Russia The Russian historiographic perception of the post-Soviet nation-states of Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, and Ukraine (and at times also of Finland) tends to be mediated through the term окраины okrainy. Similarly, though only regarding Belarus, Lithuania, and Ukraine (at times, also Latvia), Polish historians often employ the term kresy.
