Note on Language Use, Terminology, and Geography Geographic or personal names were markers of identity and belonging in the nineteenth century (and remain so to some extent today) and thus were contested as elements of nationalist discourse. In many cases, individuals, especially those indifferent to nationalism, changed their names based on the context; for scholars who published in both the Cyrillic and Latin alpha- bets, changing transcription and translation rules mean that the names under which these scholars are currently known differ from those used during their lifetimes. To avoid unwieldy formulations, this work uses the English names currently in use when appropriate. For the sake of precision, in the case of cities that belonged to different states at different times, the name is given in the language of the given state at that time. Alternative names for people and places in other languages are noted at the first appearance of the name. This also applies to designations that are mentioned in the text and is used consistently for all the languages involved. Cyrillic names occasionally appear in the main text, which seems justified because many of the persons, places, and organizations dealt with here are in fact hard to identify if only a Latin transcription is provided. For the sake of historical accuracy, this text includes a few terms that might be new to scholars not familiar with the Habsburg Empire of the nineteenth century or with the scholarly system of the time. Special terms referring to Habsburg universities (Privatdozenten, Utraquisierung, etc.) have been explained in the text or notes at their first appearance and, if pos- sible, are replaced with English terms in the main text. The local geographic terms are best explained by means of a short overview of nineteenth-century central Europe.

His compositions were performed mostly in Central Europe, but it should be underlined that the preserved manuscripts display an impressive area in which he must have been known. There are thousands preserved sources that confirm his popularity in the past; therefore, it is disturbing as well as intriguing that Schiedermayr is usually overlooked by scholars investigating music of the early 19th century. In my paper, I present life of the composer, in­ cluding existing literature that concerns this topic, and I make an attempt to reconstruct his output as hitherto no one have done it. The frst dissertation in chemistry was approved in 1902. In the following years, only one or two women were annually enrolled, while the number of male students of chemistry continuously fuctuated around 22. Whereas four women completed their doctorate in the frst year of WWI, six followed in 1917, and ten more in 1919. Strikingly, in that year the number of female students even exceeded that of male colleagues. Margarethe Furcht, the daughter of a Jewish stockbroker, was the frst female chemist with a doctoral degree certifcate in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her paper “Über die Veresterung von Sulfosäuren…”, which she published in 1902 together with her academic supervisor Rudolf Wegscheider, was one of the frst scientifc chemical publications of women in Austria. However, of all female graduates, only a small number worked as chemists within the next two decades. After the occupation of Austria by German Troops in March 1938, seven of the Jewish women managed to emigrate, four were murdered in the Holocaust. Given the importance of this period within the landscape of European scientifc history, we here aim to provide the frst comprehensive overview of the history of women studying chemistry at the University of Vienna.

În 1908 în Cernăuţi a avut loc primul Congres Mondial consacrat idişului. Această atmosferă a fost puternic viciată în perioada interbelică de manifestarea puternică a naţionalismului şi antisemitismului. Typological Studies of Ancient Theatre Architecture: The Tree vs. the Rhizome Model Zeynep Aktüre This paper aims to draw attention to a comparatively recent paradigm shift in studies on ancient theatre architecture that has resulted in a transformation of the rather familiar theatre typology based on Greek-Roman binarism to one which stresses a multiplicity in the ancient performance building types that escapes a representation of the binary model; and explains this change by a parallel shift of emphasis from the idea of commonness to that of plurality in the conceptualisation of European cultural identity. Such contextualisation of the modern historiography on ancient theatre architecture in contemporary Europe, where we find the origins of archaeology as a discipline, would conform to the idea that ‘archaeological interpretation is necessarily a subjective process which is influenced by the socio-political context in which it takes place’ (Jones and Graves-Brown 1996: 19).

It is the oldest university in Poland, the second oldest university in Central Europe (after Charles University in Prague) and one of the oldest universities in the world. It was positioned by QS World University Rankings as the best Polish university among the world's top 500 and the ARWU as the best Polish higher-level institution. The university fell upon hard times when the occupation of Kraków by Austria-Hungary during the Partitions of Poland threatened its existence. In 1817, soon after the creation of the Duchy of Warsaw the university has been renamed to Jagiellonian University in order to commemorate Poland's Jagiellonian dynasty, which first revived the Kraków University in the past. In 2006, The Times Higher Education Supplement ranked Jagiellonian University as Poland's top university. Short description of the location Kraków (Polish pronunciation: *ˈkrakuf+ ( listen)) also Cracow, or Krakow (US English /ˈkrɑːkaʊ/, UK English /ˈkrækɒv/) is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland.
