My rese- arch on the forms and manifestations of Josephinism and the commemoration of Joseph II in mid-19th century Austria needed indeed several months of meticulous scholarly work in Vienna, Athens and Budapest in order to be completed. For that result a great number of people are directly or indirectly responsible. First and foremost, my parents and brother, to whom this the-sis is dedicated, have supported by morally for all that period and tolerated my peculiarity to work on a topic almost completely foreign to the Greek-speaking audience. I hope that I managed to transfer them at least a tiny piece of my enthusiasm for the afterlife of Joseph II. Secondly, no respectable academic product can be born without the assistance and the guidance of experienced advisors, who gran- ted me valuable ideas and made me feel how is like being a part of a larger academic community. Firstly, my supervisor at the University of Vienna, Lothar Höbelt needs to be mentioned for the hours he devoted in reading and correcting my draft chapters. Al- so the names of Peter Becker and Thomas Winkelbauer should by no means be missing from this list as they were always eager to discuss my ideas and the progress of my work without being obliged to do so. Aliprantis Budapest, November 2015 4 PROLOGUE ___________ I. “[Concerning the reign of Joseph II] for the entire subsequent period up to our time, the evolution of Austria was captured in his [i.e. Joseph II’s] traces and constituted an inexhaustible ferment in the lives of the Austrian people and forced all the parties to look back at it [i.e. the era of Joseph II], to resume it [and] to carry on in one or the other direction, because the interests of freedom and of absolutism found in the Josephinian view their representation.”1 In the above words, the leading art historian Anton Springer2 described in 1863 the tremendous impact of the historical memory of the Austrian enlightened despot Joseph II (1741-1790, r.1765/80-1790)3 in the formation of the political and intellectual landscape of the mid-19th century Habsburg Empire. During his ten-year sole ruler- ship, Joseph II, inspired by the principles and motives of Enlightened Absolutism4 and aspiring to maximize the productivity of and “rationalize” his patrimonial lands, attem- pted daring and far-reaching reforms within the Monarchy5. These ambitious plans par- ticularly concerned the centralization of the administration throughout the Monarchy (including Hungary)6, the creation of an efficient imperial bureaucracy7, the enactment of religious tolerance for the non-Catholic Habsburg subjects8 and the subordination of the Catholic Church to State control9. His compositions were performed mostly in Central Europe, but it should be underlined that the preserved manuscripts display an impressive area in which he must have been known. There are thousands preserved sources that confirm his popularity in the past; therefore, it is disturbing as well as intriguing that Schiedermayr is usually overlooked by scholars investigating music of the early 19th century. In my paper, I present life of the composer, in­ cluding existing literature that concerns this topic, and I make an attempt to reconstruct his output as hitherto no one have done it. Even if a person bears two or more surnames, they are treated on a par, which may be further emphasized by hyphenation, yielding the phenomenon known as double-barrelled (or even multi-barrelled) surnames. However, this single-entity approach, visible e.g. in official forms, is largely an oversimplification. This becomes more obvious when one remembers such household names as Ludwig van Beethoven, Alexander von Humboldt, Oscar de la Renta, or Olivia de Havilland. Contemporary surnames resulted from long and complicated historical processes. Consequently, certain surnames contain also function words — “alien bodies” in the realm of proper names, in a manner of speaking. Among these words one can distinguish: — prepositions, such as the Portuguese de; Swedish von, af; Dutch bij, onder, ten, ter, van; Italian d’, de, di; German von, zu, etc.; — articles, e.g. Dutch de, het, ’t; Italian l’, la, le, lo — they will interest us here only when used in combination with another category, such as prepositions; — combinations of prepositions and articles/conjunctions, or the contracted forms that evolved from such combinations, such as the Italian del, dello, del- la, dell’, dei, degli, delle; Dutch van de, van der, von der; German von und zu; Portuguese do, dos, da, das; — conjunctions, e.g.

Despite the prominent economists involved (e.g. Schumpeter, Mises, Mayer, Spann, Amonn) its activities soon petered out. The relaunch of the NOeG in 1927 origi- nated from the necessity of the two strands of the Austrian school, led by Mayer and Mises, to fnd some tolerable arrangement; Spann and economists outside the University of Vienna were excluded. Around 1930 the NOeG and Vienna in gen- eral proved an attraction for many well-known economists from abroad, and many of the papers presented were printed and cited in frst-rate journals. Yet with the emigration of many Austrian economists during the 1930s the NOeG mirrored the general decline of academic economics in Austria and the number and quality of the papers presented decreased. After the Anschluss 1938 the NOeG and its president Mayer were quick in dismissing its Jewish members and in the following adhered to a strategy of inconspicuous adaptation; its formal existence did not lead to any substantial activities. The post-war period was characterized by the restoration of the situation before 1938, with Mayer’s continued presence at the university as well as at the NOeG a case in point. In the end, it led Austrian academic economics into a state of international isolation and “provincialization” much lamented by the émigré economists of the Austrian school.

Ways and unbeaten tracks of tolerance According to the Oxford Philosophical Dictionary, id eo lo g y means “a group of beliefs, ways of thinking and categories which is the basis of some political or social activity program”2. Freedom of exchanging thoughts and outlooks numerously cited in various programs or normative acts, including the Universal Declaration of Human and Citizen Rights from 1789, is a theoretical message, commonly accepted. In practice, however, it is often disrespected. Each human community, formal or informal one, has always needed ideological basis for its existence. Therefore, there are conflicts generated, so called ideological fights aiming at discrediting one social group by another one. Clearly, an ideological fight is expressed in a state division into democratic (especially the European countries and the USA), totalitarian (e.g. the North Korea or Cuba) and fundamental ones (Iran, Saudi Arabia). The example of such conflict is an attempt to implement, in Afghani­ stan, the first socialistic system by the former Soviet Union or, nowadays, democratic one by the USA and its allies. Interstates conflicts have been, however, of different kinds over centuries due to changing concept of a state, e.g. a state in the republic period of the ancient Rome was comprehended as an assembly of legal citizens.

    Austrian High Enlightenment Josephinism, Literature, and State Building Joshkin Aziz Sezer University of Minnesota Abstract This article examines state building under Joseph II in the Habsburg Empire between the period of 1780-1790 and considers the intellectual successes of Josephinism. It analyzes the context of his targeted intellectual audience and focuses in particular on the work of Austrian author Johnn Pezzl who was a contemporary of Joseph II and a member of Masonic and other Enlightenment era groups. Article The reign of Joseph II was at the peak of Enlightenment sensibilities, and in many ways, he personified the ideal of an enlightened monarch. To be an enlightened monarch was to embody the state in your every action and be dictated not by the church or emotional sentimentality but by logic and reason; Joseph certainly worked towards this ideal. After the death of his mother Maria Theresa in 1780, Joseph oversaw a number of reforms in the Habsburg realm. From his Edict of Tolerance in 1781 to his lifting of censorship on the press to his attempts to modernize agriculture in the Empire, Joseph was a figure of modernity. This is not to say Austria was the backward land that it is often portrayed as in popular history; its many different legal systems, languages, and lack of centralized structures were not dissimilar to France, England, and even Prussia.1 Yet Austria and Joseph II were subtly different in this era and marked by continual contradictions. Joseph II liberalized censorship laws, yet at the same time, he went against theatre and ballet, pushed for greater “Germanization” throughout his empire, and took part in the dismantling of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The incremental work that we rightly celebrate each year culminated in the recent announcement that the College has risen to third in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report national college rankings, up from a ranking of fifteenth on the same list in 2006. These rankings depend on a wide variety of measures. Among these are selectivity, financial resources, class size, graduation and retention rates, alumni giving, and reputation among high-school counselors. We are now in worthy company with our top peers, and while we do not manage the College for the sake of these rankings, we can allow ourselves to be gratified to see the University of Chicago publicly acknowledged in this way. Chicago also fared well in the newest international research rankings organized by ShanghaiRank- ing and the London Times, ranking ten and ten respectively out of many hundreds of institutions. I would like to start by directing your attention to the cover pictures of three recent biographies I(Figures 1‒3). If you look at these pictures you will find one astonishing commonality. I am sure that this is neither a coincidence, nor just a fad: on each of the three covers, you only see a part of the portrait. For me, this perfectly symbolizes a specific, skeptical view of biography writing. As a biographer, these cover pictures say, you never get the whole picture of a person. It’s always up to the author not only to choose the material but also to establish a certain narrative structure. A life is not a story, and a biography does not simply tell itself. There is always more than one true life story of a person. As the Swiss historian Valentin Groebner recently put it: “The past is a big untidy cellar. It is a bit damp and dark and smells a bit strange there.
