Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu PL ISSN 0078-4648 [email protected] FUNCTION WORDS IN SURNAMES — “ALIEN BODIES” IN ANTHROPONYMY (WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO POLAND) K e y w o r d s: multipart surnames, compound surnames, complex surnames, nobiliary particles, function words in surnames INTRODUCTION Surnames in Europe (and in those countries outside Europe whose surnaming patterns have been influenced by European traditions) are mostly conceptualised as single entities, genetically nominal or adjectival. Even if a person bears two or more surnames, they are treated on a par, which may be further emphasized by hyphenation, yielding the phenomenon known as double-barrelled (or even multi-barrelled) surnames. However, this single-entity approach, visible e.g. in official forms, is largely an oversimplification. This becomes more obvious when one remembers such household names as Ludwig van Beethoven, Alexander von Humboldt, Oscar de la Renta, or Olivia de Havilland. Contemporary surnames resulted from long and complicated historical processes. Consequently, certain surnames contain also function words — “alien bodies” in the realm of proper names, in a manner of speaking. Among these words one can distinguish: — prepositions, such as the Portuguese de; Swedish von, af; Dutch bij, onder, ten, ter, van; Italian d’, de, di; German von, zu, etc.; — articles, e.g. Dutch de, het, ’t; Italian l’, la, le, lo — they will interest us here only when used in combination with another category, such as prepositions; — combinations of prepositions and articles/conjunctions, or the contracted forms that evolved from such combinations, such as the Italian del, dello, del- la, dell’, dei, degli, delle; Dutch van de, van der, von der; German von und zu; Portuguese do, dos, da, das; — conjunctions, e.g. -

Isle of Wight Parks, Gardens & Other Designed Landscapes Historic Environment Action Plan Isle of Wight Gardens Trust: March 2015 2 Foreword The Isle of Wight landscape is recognised as a source of inspiration for the picturesque movement in tourism, art, literature and taste from the late 18th century but the particular significance of designed landscapes (parks and gardens) in this cultural movement is perhaps less widely appreciated. Evidence for ‘picturesque gardens’ still survives on the ground, particularly in the Undercliff. There is also evidence for many other types of designed landscapes including early gardens, landscape parks, 19th century town and suburban gardens and gardens of more recent date. In the 19th century the variety of the Island’s topography and the richness of its scenery, ranging from gentle cultivated landscapes to the picturesque and the sublime with views over both land and sea, resulted in the Isle of Wight being referred to as the ‘Garden of England’ or ‘Garden Isle’. Designed landscapes of all types have played a significant part in shaping the Island’s overall landscape character to the present day even where surviving design elements are fragmentary. Equally, it can be seen that various natural components of the Island’s landscape, in particular downland and coastal scenery, have been key influences on many of the designed landscapes which will be explored in this Historic Environment Action Plan (HEAP). It is therefore fitting that the HEAP is being prepared by the Isle of Wight Gardens Trust as part of the East Wight Landscape Partnership’s Down to the Coast Project, particularly since well over half of all the designed landscapes recorded on the Gardens Trust database fall within or adjacent to the project area. -

Procházka In Anbetracht der zufolge der politischen Trennung und gezielten Vernichtung geschichtlich gewordener Gemeinsamkeiten auch auf dem Gebiete der Genealogie immer mehr und mehr um sich greifenden Vergessenheit und Unkenntnis der so bedeutenden Beiträge böhmischer Genealogen für alle historischen Hilfswissenschaf ten erscheint eine zusammenfassende Würdigung ihres Fachwissens und ihres nach gelassenen Werkes dringend geboten. Im Rahmen dieser Abhandlung soll daher eine Übersicht einer kurzgefaßten Literaturgeschichte der Adelsgenealogie in den historischen Ländern der Böhmi schen Krone geboten werden. Public notice Consolidation and Review of Traffic Management Orders for ‘Map-based’ Schedule Format The London Borough of Southwark (Charged-For Parking Places) (Map-based) Order 202* The London Borough of Southwark (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) (Map-based) Order 202* 1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to make the above Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49, 63 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 19841, as amended. 2. The general effect of the Orders would be: (a) to consolidate the provisions of all existing Orders designating on-street charged-for parking places, free parking places, loading places and waiting, loading and stopping restrictions on streets in the London Borough of Southwark; (b) to update the terms and conditions for the use of on-street free parking places, loading places and waiting, loading and stopping restrictions as well as all on-street charged-for parking places set by those Orders. These would reflect the Council’s current parking policy in terms of eligibility for permits and applicable fees and charges, and any applicable exemptions; and (c) to provide for the use of a ‘map-based’ schedule, to be read in conjunction with the Orders, describing the location, type of the restriction, class of vehicle, the hours of operation and where applicable, the Controlled Parking Zone in which the parking places are located (and thereby the permit types to be displayed on or indicated in relation to vehicles left in parking places). We continue to emphasise the broader diplomatic function that art can play by selecting works that link Britain with the rest of the world in embassies and diplomatic buildings abroad, which this year included Copenhagen, Cairo and Moscow. Acquisitions Outset/Government Art Collection Fund This year saw the establishment of a new partnership, the Outset/ Government Art Collection Fund. Founded in 2003, Outset is an independent international organisation that supports new art within the public arena through private funding. The aim of the Fund is to add 12 important new works of art to the Collection over three years. The first work given to the GAC as a result of the Fund was a large-scale photograph by Isaac Julien, followed by an acrylic painting on vintage textile by Shezad Dawood. Aside from the Outset/GAC Fund acquisitions, other new works were acquired, including an abstract painting by the late Jon Thompson, an oil painting by Dexter Dalwood and a portfolio of 20 prints including Gillian Ayres, Gordon Cheung and Howard Hodgkin. We also purchased a rare historical portrait of King Henry VIII by an Unknown 16th-Century Anglo-Flemish artist.
