Positing Jewish emancipation as a trans-historical and cultural process, my study traces the poetic journey of a particular set of Orientalist tropes from 19th century ghetto stories to contemporary writings and film at the turn of the millennium to address a twofold question: what could this problematic method of representation accomplish for Germany’s Jewish minority in the past, and how do we understand its re-appropriation by Germany’s “new Jewry” today. -

Cronologia unirii Bucovinei cu România (II): Intervenția românească în Bucovina și unirea acesteia cu România (8-28 noiembrie 1918) Paul BRUSANOWSKI Universitatea „Lucian Blaga” din Sibiu Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu Personal e-mail: [email protected] The Chronology of Bucovina’s Union with Romania (II): The Romanian Intervention in Bucovina and its Union with Romania (8-28 November 1918) During the dissolution of Habsburg Austria, the Ukrainians organized a National Assembly in Lviv on October 19 and declared the establishment of the Ukrainian state, stretching from the San River in the west (today, in south- eastern Poland) to the Siret River in the east (thus including the northern half of Bukovina). The Romanians in Bukovina held a Constituent Assembly on October 27 and decided the unification of the whole Bukovina with Romania. On November 1, 1918, the Ukrainians organized a coup d’état and took over Eastern Galicia, and on November 6, the city of Chernivtsi. Upon the request of the Romanian Constituent Assembly, the Romanian Royal Army entered Bukovina, and on November 12, occupied the city of Chernivtsi, from which the Ukrainian soldiers and officials had fled. The Romanian National Council, established by the Constituent Assembly, took over the power in Bukovina, issued a new constitution of the country and instituted a Romanian government in Bukovina. On November 28, the Romanian government organized a Congress of all the inhabitants of Bukovina, which proclaimed the union of the province with Romania. The German and the Polish inhabitants of the province officially attended the Congress and sanctioned the union; the Jewish community boycotted the Congress, while only 13 unofficial representatives of the Ukrainian community from several Ruthenian villages participated. -
German and Jewish Memories of Bukovina After the Second World War
GAËLLE FISHER Same Space, Different Stories: German and Jewish memories of Bukovina after the Second World War Gaëlle Fisher University College London Abstract This article explores the themes of unity and disunity with regard to German and Jewish memories of Bukovina after the Second World War. Although one often reads in the literature that Bukovina was home to a large number of minorities, notably Jews and Germans, who lived together peacefully and harmoniously, I demonstrate the extent to which this ‘unity’ was challenged by the violent experience of the war and the Holocaust. I show that despite similar means and modes of commemoration and references to the same place and time, the stories told by German and Jews about the region were very different. Looking at the features of post-war approaches to Bukovina among Jews and Germans, I argue the ‘disunity’ results from both different experiences and different conceptions of Germanness. I conclude with some thoughts on Bukovina as a physical and memorial landscape in the present and the future. Keywords: Bukovina; German-speakers; Germanness; memory; displacement Sharing Space: Germans and Jews in Bukovina The historical region of Bukovina (1775-1918), the easternmost province of the Habsburg Empire, was also its most ethnically diverse. No ethnic group represented an absolute majority. Ukrainians were dominant in the north and Romanians in the south; but Germans, Jews, Poles, Hungarians, Gypsies, Russians and others lived in more or less mixed settlements throughout.1 As a 26 TROPOS province under Austrian administration, however, German was the vehicle for GAËLLE upward mobility and German-speakers dominated politics, culture and the FISHER economy. -

Benson ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Richard Benson Modernity, Marginality, and Redemption: German and Jewish Identity at the Fin-de-Siècle (Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Hess) Modernity, Marginality, and Redemption: German and Jewish Identity at the Fin-de-Siècle explores the literary, cultural, and historical process of negotiating German-Jewish identity following the radical restructuring of German-Jewish society during the nineteenth century. Modernity, Marginality, and Redemption considers the dynamic cultural roles that writers such as Karl Emil Franzos, Martin Buber, Jakob Wassermann, Theodor Herzl, and others assigned to the image of East European Jewry and of ghetto life, to Chassidic mysticism, and to messianic historical figures. I show that the works of these authors enact a self-conscious reinvention of Jewish tradition, which weds Enlightenment ideals with aspects of Jewish tradition that the Enlightenment had marginalized, while also engaging in dialogue with the most pressing discourses of fin-de-siècle European culture, in order to proffer Jewish identities that are neither strictly national nor simply religious. As I demonstrate, these texts establish Jewish identity as a central coordinate in debates about nationalism, the limits of language, phenomenology, social progress, and cultural degeneration. -

Evreii au reprezentat majoritatea locuitorilor municipiului Cernăuţi, un spaţiu renumit prin înţelegerea şi coabitarea grupărilor etnice, specifică Europei Centrale. În Cernăuţi s-au format şi afirmat Paul Celan (Paul Antschel), Moses Barasch, Jacob Eisenscher, Arthur Kolnik, Şlomo Lerner, Iţic Manger, Eliezer Steinbarg, Moses Rosenkrantz, Eric Singer, Rose Ausländer, Victor Wittner, Isac Schneyer, Clara Bloom, Alfred Kitner, Immanuel Weissglass, Alfred Gong, Alfred Margul Sperber ş.a. În 1908 în Cernăuţi a avut loc primul Congres Mondial consacrat idişului. Această atmosferă a fost puternic viciată în perioada interbelică de manifestarea puternică a naţionalismului şi antisemitismului. I ran an inn in Czchów and worked hard in order to feed and educate my children. My children grew and thrived, and I had my joy in them; they were my bliss, my pride, my solace. Particularly close to my heart was my only daughter Lea, who after completing the primary school was assisting me in the inn and at the counter. She was already 17 years old. She was well- behaved, hardworking, and diligent. Then the misfortune happened! On November 12, 1907, at 7 o’clock in the eve ning, my daughter dis appeared from our home. All the searches were in vain. [. .] I asked the police for help, but the answer they received after calling the convent about my daughter was that Lea Gänger was not there. -
