Canaan Standard General Appearance The Canaan Dog, the National dog of , is a herding and flock sentry dog originating in the Land of Canaan. The Canaan Dog is a pariah dog type that is naturally alert, inquisitive and watchful. He is mistrustful of strangers and unfamiliar environments, yet loyal and loving with his family. A square dog of medium size, moderate and balanced without extremes, showing a clean outline. The moderately angulated Canaan Dog moves with athletic agility and grace in an efficient, ground-covering endurance trot. He has a wedge-shaped head with low-set erect ears, a high set brush tail that curls over the back when confident, and a straight, harsh, flat-lying double coat. There is a marked distinction between the sexes. Size, Proportion, Substance Size - Height at the withers is 20 to 24 inches for dogs and 19 to 23 inches for bitches. The ideal Canaan Dog lies in the middle of the stated ranges. Proportion - Square when measured from the point of the shoulder to the ischium and from the point of the withers to the ground. Substance - Moderate. Dogs generally weigh 45 to 55 pounds and bitches approximately 35 to 45 pounds. Dogs distinctly masculine without coarseness and bitches feminine without over-refinement. Head Elongated, the length exceeding the breadth and depth considerably. Wedge-shaped, when viewed from above. Slightly arched when viewed from the side, tapering to stop. The region of the forehead is of medium width, but appearing broader through ears set low to complete an alert expression, with a slight furrow between the eyes. Expression - Alert, watchful and inquisitive. Dignified. Eyes -Dark, almond-shaped, slightly slanted. Varying shades of hazel with liver- pointed dogs. Eye rims darkly pigmented or of varying shades of liver harmonizing with coat color. Fault--Unpigmented eye rims. Ears - Erect, medium to large, set moderately low, broad at the base, tapering to a very slightly rounded tip. Ears angled very slightly forward when excited. A straight line from the inner corner of the ear to the tip of the nose should just touch the inner corner of the eye and a line drawn from the tip of the ear to the tip of the nose should just touch the outer corner of the eye. Ear motion contributes to expression and clearly defines the mood of the dog. Major Fault - In the adult dog, other than erect ears. Stop - Slightly accentu- ated. Muzzle -Tapering to complete the wedge shape of the head. Length equal to or slightly longer than the length of the skull from the occiput to stop. Whisker trimming optional. Nose - Darkly pigmented or varying shades of liver, harmonizing with coat color. Lips - Tight with good pigmentation. Bite Scissors.

Neck, Topline, Body Neck - well arched. Balance to body and head and free from throatiness. Topline - Level with slight arch over the loins. Body - Strong, displaying athletic agility and trimness. Chest - Moderately broad and deep, extending to the elbows, with well-sprung ribs. Loin - Well-tucked up. Short, muscled flanks. Tail - Set high. When confident tail will be carried curled over the back, either in a curl or sickle, with one full curl being the ideal. When extended, the bone shall reach to the hocks. Forequarters Shoulders moderately angulated. Legs straight. Pasterns flexible with very slight slope when viewed from the side. Dewclaws may be removed. Feet - Catlike, pads hard, pigmentation har- monizing with nose and eye rims. Nails strong, hard, pigmentation harmonizing with either nose and eye rims or coat.

Hindquarters Moderately angulated. In balance with forequarters. Straight when viewed from the rear. Thigh musculature well-developed, moderately broad. Hocks well-let-down. Dewclaws must be re- moved. Feet and nails as in fore-quarters. Hindquarters Moderately angulated. In balance with forequarters. Straight when viewed from the rear. Thigh musculature well-developed, moderately broad. Hocks well-let-down. Dewclaws must be re- moved. Feet and nails as in fore-quarters.

Coat Double coat. Outer coat-straight, harsh, flat-lying. Outer coat of medium length on body, shorter on front part of the legs and head; longer on ruff, tail, top of withers and back of thigh. Ruff more pronounced on males. Thick brush tail tapering to a pointed tip. Undercoat - soft and short with density varying with climate. Excessively long outer coat that masks the clean outline of the dog is undesirable as is any trimming that alters the natural appearance of the dog. Color There are two color patterns. Pattern 1) Predominantly white with mask and with or without additional patches of color (large body patches are desirable). Pattern 2) Solid colored with or without white trim. Color may range from black through all shades of brown - sandy to red or liver. Shadings of black on a solid brown or tan dog are frequently seen. The trim on a solid colored dog may include chest, undercarriage, feet and lower part of leg and tip of tail. In all color patterns self-ticking may be present. Disqualifications - a) Gray and/or brindle. b) All white. Mask The mask is a desired and distinguishing feature of the predominantly white Canaan Dog. The mask is the same color(s) as the body patches on the dog. The basically symmetrical mask must completely cover the eyes and ears or can completely cover the head as in a hood. The only allowed white in the mask or hood is a white blaze of any size or shape and/or white on the muzzle below the mask. Faults - On predomi- nantly white dogs - absence of mask, half mask, or grossly asymmetrical mask.

Gait The characteristic gait is a brisk and tireless trot covering more ground than expected. Moderate angulation results in the appropriate reach and drive of the natural dog’s endurance trot. In this trot the rear paw steps into the footprint of the front paw. His trot tends to converge to the center at higher speeds. The Canaan Dog is agile, graceful and able to change speed and direction instantly. Correct movement is essential to this breed.

Temperament Alert, vigilant, devoted and docile with his family. Reserved and aloof with strangers. Highly territorial, serving as a responsive companion and natural guardian. Very vocal, persistent. Easily blaze of any size or shape and/or white on the muzzle below the mask. Faults - On predomi- nantly white dogs - absence of mask, half mask, or grossly asymmetrical mask.

But, the battle for recog- nition of Canaan Dogs by AKC demanded my participation and I be- came immersed in the cause for full acceptance of the breed. To help introduce Canaan Dogs to the Fancy I joined national, regional and local dog clubs, attended and gave breed seminars, ring stew- arded at all-breed shows and specialties, bred many litters, com- peted in conformation and obedience events, judged at matches, and organized all-breed rare breed shows and specialties. As Stud- book Guardian I brought the CDCA Studbook to the AKC Registrar, and contributed to the writing of the current and former AKC breed standards. A year in West as an exchange teacher gave me the experience necessary to translate the seminal work on the breed, the Menzels’ Pariahunde. Among other academic subjects, I taught German and English in the Chicago Public Schools and at Morton College in Cicero, Illinois. I am permitted to accept any and all assignments to judge Canaan Dogs. Canaan Dog Club of America, Inc. 45th National Specialty AKC Judge Margaret (Marg) B. Pough Judging all Junior Showmanship classes

Marg was the ‘dog mad’ child in her family. Magazine subscriptions to dog publications introduced her to the Border Terrier and she be- gan showing in the 1960s. Since then, she has bred & exhibited Border Terriers and Otterhounds in conformation, obedience, track- ing and earthdog (among other events). When her daughter, Amanda, joined the local 4-H dog club, she became involved in that club, a relationship that continues to this day. She has served in many positions for both the Border Terrier Club of America, and the Otterhound Club of America as well as being active in all-breed clubs and obedience clubs on a regional & national level and is currently the AKC Delegate of the Finger Lakes Kennel Club, Inc. Marg is a 52 year member of the Border Terrier Club of America, Inc., and is also a member of the Otterhound Club of America, Inc. She is active with the Cornell Companion Therapy dog program and is an AKC Breeder of Merit. Marg is an AKC judge for Border Terriers, Otterhounds, Junior Show- manship & Earthdog. Having a child who showed in 4-H and AKC Junior Showmanship with a ‘non-traditional’ breed means she seeks out and rewards Juniors who present their dog as appropriate to their breed, and looks for handlers who present the dog, not them- selves. AKC Judge Ms. Betty Brask Judging all Obedience and Rally classes

Thank you so much for the honor of judging your National Specialty. I first saw a Ca- naan here in Arizona. I was very curious about the Canaan. Luckily a breeder took time to educate me on this fascinating breed.

As with many of us, I have had dogs all my life. As a young girl, I entered my GSD in a local match. I won a trophy and I was hooked for life! Since that time I have had many wonderful dogs who have all taught me so much. I have had a Cairn, many Beardies, a St. Bernard, a Lab and many Goldens. I have trained all of them through various levels in obedience and rally. I recently started training and showing in agility. I also com- pete in conformation. I am very proud to say I have had some BIS dogs with obedience and herding titles!

I enjoy being a part of each dog/handler team's journey through obedience and rally. Each dog brings its own flare, style and joy into the ring!

I have met many wonderful people and have made lifelong friends through dogs. Again, thank you so much for this opportunity.

Judge Carol O’Bryan Judging All Sweepstakes Classes

I have always loved animals and was always bringing home strays. I got my first show dog 47 yrs ago. I had worked weekends and holidays for Helen (Vance) O'Bryan of O'The Picts Shetlies to pay for Charlie Brown. He was from a promis- ing litter that she had and I fell in love with him from the start. Vance taught me about type and movement and was a tough taskmaster.

I married her son Stephen two years later and went to shows with Vance until my chil- dren came along and took most of my time.

I decided after some years to get back into showing and researched breeds. I needed a healthy, easy to groom breed. I got in touch with Cindy Grupp and met Max and that was my start in Canaan Dogs. Donna Dodson picked out Whoopi for me and she was my foundation.

My first litter had 2 pups by Max, Ethan was my service dog from that litter. A repeat breeding produced DeDe from whom Donna produced Magnum. Ethan then sired Emmitt who was the first AKC BIS. I now only have one Canaan & a rescue I fostered and am enjoying my granddaughter now.

No ILP (indefinite listing privilege) registered Canaan Dogs are eligible, except those of known purebred parentage. No Canaan Dogs younger than six (6) months of age may be tested for certifi- cation, except in a ducks/geese test, and then, must not be younger than 5 months of age. Livestock to be used in the certification must be well dog-broke with a mini- mum of three (3) head to a maximum of five (5) head to be used for each dog tested. If more than one dog is to be tested in a day or session, rota- tion of the stock during the test will be at the evaluator's discretion. Sheep, goats, ducks, and geese are the recommended livestock to be used for the test; cattle may be used if no other livestock are available, but are not recommended for Canaan Dogs (due to kick height and cattle unpre- dictability factors). Evaluators must be licensed herding test/trial judges in good standing with the AKC, American Herding Breed Association (AHBA), Australian Shep- herd Club of America (ASCA) and/or Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). Dogs certified by any other evaluator than those licensed by the above herding organizations will have their certification invalidated. Canaan Dogs may be certified at any CDCA-sanctioned herding event, by a private herding instructor as long as that person is a licensed judge as stated above, or at an AKC, AHBA, ASCA, or Canadian sanctioned herding event where a herding instinct test is being offered; the owner of the dog must petition the judge to complete the CDCA evaluation form (scoresheet) in addition to the official AKC/AHBA/ASCA/CKC scoresheet at the conclusion of their performance. Except for herding instinct tests held as a part of the CDCA National Spe- cialty events, owners wishing to have their Canaan Dogs certified are responsible for obtaining the official CDCA Herding Evaluation form (scoresheet) from either the CDCA website or the CDCA Herding Chair. A copy of the form, upon the successful completion (PASSED) of the test by the dog, must each be sent to the CDCA Herding and Awards Chairperson(s) for acknowledgment of the achievement. Another copy of the form should be kept by the dog's owner as a part of the dog's perma- nent records and, if he/she so desires, a copy given to the evaluator. A Canaan Dog which passes the herding instinct test will be awarded the CDCA title, Herding Certified (HC) by the Herding and Awards Chairs upon notification, and the certificate awarded to the owner at the next annual awards banquet. For the CDCA Herding Excellent (HCX) title, a Canaan Dog must success- fully pass three (3) herding instinct tests under at least two (2) different judges. In addition, one of the tests must be a CDCA-sanctioned herding instinct test (i.e., a test held during a CDCA National Specialty, regional specialty or other CDCA-sanctioned event). A dog may obtain two (2) qualifying "legs" within the same day under the same judge or different judges for each test and provided that sufficient time (minimum of 1 hr) has elapsed to allow livestock and dog ample rest.

CDCA Versatility Programs This program is open to CDCA members in good standing who own AKC- registered Canaan Dogs who have excelled in many types of competition in both AKC and CDCA. Only purebred Canaan Dogs or those ILP-registered dogs of known Canaan Dog parentage (validated either by the breeder or the Canaan Dog Rescue Network [CDRN]), intact or neutered, of at least six (6) months of age are eligible; dogs do not need to permanently reside in the to be eligible. There will be 4 Versatility Title Levels - Versatility (V), Versatility Advanced (VA), Versatility Excellent (VX), and Versatility Superior (VS). Required AKC and/or CDCA earned titles to be used towards a CDCA Versatility title will come from six different area categories below; exception to the title re- quirement will be major conformation breed wins (awards) in the Versatility (V) and Versatility Superior (VS) levels. Required titles for each level will be reviewed annually and any changes will be approved by the CDCA Board and the Awards Chair. A copy of each AKC and/or CDCA title/certificate listed below must be sent to the Awards Chair via email or postal service. If AKC certificates are unavailable, an official copy of the dog's Awards Record from the AKC websitemay be used in lieu of certificates. Six Area Categories 1. Conformation 2. “When Dvora ben Shaul learned of the appointment by the Association for the Preservation of Oriental Breeds of a committee to make a study of the Canaan, Dvora decided immediately to interview Professor Dr. Rudolphina Menzel. Most of the breeders and dog-fanciers in Israel think that the standards for recognition of the breed are too general. They think that the standards should be narrowed to exclude the Canaan and recognize only the Collie Canaan.

“Dvora spoke to Professor Menzel in her comfortable, book-filled apartment at a home for the elderly in Haifa. It was a warm day so Dvora and the Professor decided to sit on the porch. From the porch the Professor pointed to some cats in the distance that regularly come to cry under her window. The two of them began discussing dogs in general, but the conversation dealt mostly with the status of the Canaan.”

Dvora: If you wrote a new standard for the Canaan today would you leave it as it is,or would you make changes?

Prof. Menzel: (She thought for a brief moment and answered): The standard has been good and it still is. The representation of the breed is as it should be and not as it should be. I think that we need to do more for the type of Canaan we are looking for and less with the many Ca- naans that are of a less favorable type.

Dvora: What is the b e s t type of Canaan, is there an ideal Canaan in your opinion?

Prof. Menzel: (She answered without the slightest hesitation): The Collie Canaan is the more highly developed type while the Dingo is a more primitive example of the breed. We have a rare and fascinating opportunity to witness two species of the same animal in two distinct stages of development and living side by side. Further, we must not forget that the Collie Canaan does not represent the last plateau of Canaan development. Due to the combined forces of man and nature acting upon them, other portions of this part of the family tree of dogs have indeed stopped developing. These dogs include the Saluki, , Australian Dingo and others. But the Canaan left alone to fend for itself by its own devices continues to develop.

Dvora: If this is so, what are your thoughts on the Dingo today? Should the Dingo be disquali- fied completely as a specie of the Canaan breed?

Dr. Menzel: In a sense, nature has already disqualified the Dingo. The moment that a more advanced specie appears, in this case the Collie Canaan, then nature has made its choice for us. That is, as the breed advanced, nature pushed the Dingo aside.

I personally think we should maintain absolute separation of the two species. Thus, the way would be clear for us to concentrate on the development of the Collie type, and it should also be clear for anyone who wished to develop the Dingo to do so. After all, though the Dingo is a more primitive specie than the Collie, it is still a true Canaan.

Dvora: It is said that when two attend a meeting they will express three opinions. You will also find this true concerning the matter of the breeding of the Canaan dog. I wanted to hear your opinion about a few controversial points. For example, is the prick ear usually preferable to the button ear?

Dr. Menzel: In my opinion the prick ear is the ideal, but it is also possible to accept the button ear.

Dvora: And color … a number of breeders refuse to recognize any Canaan that is tri-colored.

Dr. Menzel: To me all colors are acceptable if they are colors naturally found in the Canaan family. This omits grey which usually represents a mixing of the bloodline with some other breed. When grey appears on a Canaan one must be highly suspicious of its purity. In general, a tri-colored coloring in a Canaan is definitely acceptable in my opinion.

Dvora: And what about the matter of the tail? There are those who hold that the standard for the Canaan tail should be that the tail must hang in a sickle-like shape, and only when the dog gets excited should the tail curl completely around over the back. And there are others who do not agree with this opinion.

Dr. Menzel: I never thought that a Canaan should carry its tail hanging. It is only permitted to do so with the condition that when it gets excited it curled its tail around over its back. It is bet- ter if the tail remains curled all the time.

Dvora: How will you go about transferring the emphasis on Canaans to the Collie spe- cies? After all, many people own Dingo Canaans and surely they will not look favorably upon the disqualification of their dogs?

Dr. Menzel: There is no need for this. We need only accentuate the Colie type. If after the mating of a Dingo and a Collie only the Collie puppies are raised especially for breeding, then after a short while all of the Canaans would be of the Collie type.

Dvora: In other words you simply suggest quickening the natural process of development of the breed by selective breeding and raising?

Dr. Menzel: It is only necessary to give nature a little push in the direction it is already head- ing.” “The Modern Canaan”, an article appearing in Chevav Ha Celev (Dog Lovers Magazine) No. 18 Feb. 1972, Jerusalem. The translated article on pages 4 and 5 included a picture of Prof. Menzel and a picture of Nadav me B’Nei Habitachon. Nadav has been imported to the U.S.A. and is owned by Dr. Norton of Southfield, MI. Earlier this year, several ICDCA members attended and recorded the Interna- tional Canaan Dog Conference which celebrated 50 years of breed recogni- tion by the international canine community. A DVD has been compiled and includes conference lectures, international breeder panel discussion, plus a photo slideshow of the desert trip that resulted in Dardar being brought in from the wild. This DVD is available for $30 + shipping to ICDCA members, $40 + shipping to non-members. Half of all sales will go to Shaar Hagai Kennels in support of their effort to expand the breed gene pool. Kol Tuv Bringer of Light

2011 was the year of her birth. By the spring of 2012 she made her way across the Jordanian border to her new home in Jerusalem. On February 20, 2013 she delivered her first litter of eight healthy puppies. In the spring/summer of 2014 her second litter brought ten more happy and healthy puppies into the world. In September 2015 she whelped her third litter bringing the world seven more adorable little Canaans. Eight months ago, at the Israel Canaan Dog Conference in March 2015, she was named Best of Breed. It certainly wasn¹t her first title, but unfortunately was to be her last.

May your life in Eternity always be peaceful.

We thank you, “Mama” Janey, for giving us our wonderful best friends, Kiva and Carmit. And, most importantly, sincere thanks to Myrna Shiboleth of Shaar Hagai Kennels, for continuing the work to bring these new bloodlines into the breed so the world may truly know and enjoy these amazing desert dogs.
