Literary works This section needs to be expanded. You can help by adding to it. (October 2019) Azaz's first published book was about a collection of poems written by himself, a book called Aloukik Istimar (lit. 'Supernatural Steamboat'), it was published in 1973, in which he went to Scotland to study a doctorate in linguistics from the University of Edinburgh. He wrote a story in 1979 called Onoboroto Tusharpat (lighted. heavy snow, which was inspired by his newly overseas life with his Dhaka University class partner Latifah Kohinoor, he took Latif of Scotland after marriage in 1975, the UK one day among Snow Azad was driving a car with his wife, which became the main plot of the story; so many years later Azad included included story in his 1996 book Jadukorer Mrityu (Lit. Death of a Magician) which the book is a collection of his own written five stories. In the late 1980s, he began writing a newspaper column on contemporary social and political issues. His comments continued throughout the 1990s and were later published as books as they grew in numbers. His writings of the 1990s and early 2000s he established himself as a writer. In 1992, Azad published the first comprehensive feminist book in Bengali called Naree ( English: Woman). Nari received both positive and negative reviews as a treatise, and was considered the first full-fledged feminist book since Bangladesh's independence. In this work, Azad mentioned the pro-female contributions of two well-known Bengali social and political reformers: Raja Rammohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagara, who criticized Rabindranath Tagore, a famous Bengali poet and Nobel laureate, and Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, a famous 19th-century Bengali writer. The work, criticizing society's patriarchal and chauvinistic attitude towards women, provoked a backlash from many Bangladeshi readers. The Government of Bangladesh banned the book in 1995. The ban was eventually overturned in 2000, following a legal battle that Azad won in the country's High Court. In 1994, he published his first novel, which was called Chhappanno Hazar Borgomile (lit. Fifty-six thousand square miles, Bangladesh squared). The novel was about military rule in Bangladesh. He received special recognition for his second novel Sab Kichu Bhene Pare (1995), which was based on the interpersonal relationships of Bangladeshi society. He wrote Ekti Huner Shopno (lit. Dream of Murder, an unrequited love-based novel where the male protagonist lives in the Muslim hall of Salimullah University of Dhaka, where Azad lived during his student life, was Azaz's last novel, published in 2004, in which he died. Attempted murder took place on 27 February 2004, near the campus of the University of Dhaka during the annual Bangla Academy book fair, and two attackers armed with machetes repeatedly broke Azad's jaw, lower neck and hands.
