10/12/2015 Return of the Gods - The Cambodia Daily Return of the Gods by Michelle Vachon | October 10, 2015 Over the past few years, Leang Seckon has been using his art to explore the turmoil that engulfed every Cambodian in the 1970s and ’80s. This started with his series “Heavy Skirt,” named after the garment that his mother used to wear, patching it over and over again in the early 1970s as their village in Prey Veng province was being bombed. Leang Seckon and his mixed media artwork, ‘Indochina War,’ in his studio in Phnom Penh (Jens https://www.cambodiadaily.com/weekendtag/return-of-the-god-97003/ 1/5 10/12/2015 Return of the Gods - The Cambodia Daily Welding Ollgaard/The Cambodia Daily) Now, with the mural‐size works he created for his first New York exhibition next week at the Sundaram Tagore Galleries, Mr. Seckon will seek to bring artistic closure to those decades of misery, using the recent repatriation of a looted Cambodian antiquity to symbolize the spiritual end of decades of civil war. In May, a 10th‐century statue of the Hindu monkey deity Hanuman, which is believed to have been looted from the Koh Ker temple complex in the 1960s, was returned by the Cleveland Museum of Art. For Mr. Seckon, having Hanuman back home means that the country is again under the protection of the deity. One of the most cherished figures in the country’s mythology, Hanuman plays a prominent role in the Reamker, Cambodia’s version of the Indian epic tale Ramayana. -

Certaines oeuvres émanant de spécialistes et professionnels dans ce domaine ont été publiées Danse classique khmère au Cambodge par le passé. Ceci ayant pour but de mettre en lu- mière la culture khmère, sa danse et sa musique. Le dernier évènement dramatique qui a frappé le Cambodge pendant les trente dernières années a dénaturé l’aspect culturel du Cambodge. Cette altération pourrait s’accentuer, tenant compte du fait que l’avancée des nouvelles technologies évoluent sans cesse, au détriment du passé et de l’art classique. Les multiples efforts des Cambodgiens de France, d’Europe ou de l’étranger, leur aide permanente apportée, demeure un consi- FOLKLORE dérable appui, encourageant et poussant par conséquent, les Cambodgiens du Cambodge à ne jamais se décourager et conti- nuer à transmettre les bases de la culture khmère à leurs géné- rations futures. Cette dernière étant la culture dominante de l’Asie du sud-est. LOKHON Pour preuve, l’UNESCO a inscrit le 7 novembre 2003, le “Ballet Royal du Cambodge” sur la liste du Patrimoine oral et imma- Folklore tériel de l’Humanité, de même que le “Sbèk Thom” ou le théâtre d’ombres khmer dont les personnages du Reamker sont sculptés MUSIQUE KHMERE sur cuir, le 25 novembre 2005. C’est un immense honneur pour le peuple khmer d’être mis en lumière par l’UNESCO et de pouvoir préserver sa culture bien Lakhon menacée à nombreux égards par le passé. -

But in the Northern Lao language this mushroom is called monkey-ear mushrooms. Queen Sida asked the Monkey King, Hanuman, to go search for the mushrooms for her from the mountain of Oudomxay. “Could you please go and get the mushrooms from Oudomxay Mountain for me?” said Queen Sida. “Yes, my Lady,” answered Hanuman. So Hanuman flew to Oudomxay Mountain and gathered some mushrooms for Queen Sida. He returned with a basket full of mushrooms for her. But Queen Sida looked at the mushrooms and said, “Oh no, this is not the kind of mushroom I would like to have. Please go and bring some others.” She did not want to say that she really wanted monkey-ear mushrooms for she thought that it would offend Hanuman, who is, after all, a monkey. “Yes, my Lady,” said Hanuman. He soared to the sky to pick up more mushrooms in Oudomxay Mountain. After awhile he returned with another basket full of mushrooms for Queen Sida. She again examined the mushrooms. “Oh no, this is still not the kind of mushrooms I would like to have. Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) Mahila Shibir 2020 East and South Midlands Vibhag FOREWORD INSPIRING AND UNPRECEDENTED INITIATIVE In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programs - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in seven vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of seven e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayan ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life and The contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire project was conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks. -

Accordingly, Guha has kept ready five hundred boat with their ferry-men for the purpose. All of them reach the opposite shore of the river. Encamping the army at the shore in the magnificent woods of Prayaga, Bharata along with the priests and king's counselors, approach the hermitage of Bharadwaja. APPENDIX B: READ ALOUD VERSION OF THE RAMAYANA, ADAPTED BY SARAH WILLNER Part 1: The Early Life of Rama The entire kingdom of Ayodhya in India shared the sadness of their king, Dasharatha, who had three wives but no children. In deep meditation, he was told how to enact a ceremony and distill a pure butter to give to his wives. After drinking it, they became pregnant and had many sons. The King’s servant Mergdah discussed the magical qualities of the butter. “How come that doesn’t work for me?” Merdah’s old and wise father, also a valued servant of the King, replied, “Any old but- ter won’t do. It’s the meditation that makes it work.” The King’s favorite son was Prince Rama, son of his wife Kausalya, who was studious, brave, thoughtful, and loyal. Everyone agreed that Rama should become king after his father. His father decided to hold the inauguration before he died, to make sure that his choice would be carried out peacefully. Tualen and Merdah kept to the King’s side around the clock to carry his wishes to the people. Fabulous preparations were made for the ceremony. People came from all over the kingdom to attend the inauguration of their beloved Prince Rama. Part 2: Rama’s Exile But all did not go as just as planned. On the eve of the ceremony, another of Dasharatha’s wives, Queen Kaikeyi, was overcome with jealousy. Why shouldn’t her son, Bharata, Rama’s brother, become king? Was he not as good as Rama? She remembered that long ago she had taken very good care of King Dasharatha after he received a wound on the battlefield and he had promised to grant her a wish ..
