  • Making Amusement the Vehicle of Instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900
1 ‘Making amusement the vehicle of instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900 PhD Thesis submitted by Lesley Jane Delaney UCL Department of English Literature and Language 2012 SIGNED DECLARATION 2 I, Lesley Jane Delaney confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’.

  • 1 Descendants of Nichol Gass
Descendants of Nichol Gass (1801 – Apr 1878) And Jean Copeland (1803 – 1872) First Generation ************************************************** 1. Nichol Gass. Born 1801 in Scotland. Died Apr 1878 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer. Religion Presbyterian. The surname is spelled "Goss" in some areas of the province, but in the Harvey area it is "Gass". Unknown exact date when Nichol Gass and his wife Jean Copeland came to Harvey, they are not in the 1851 Census but are in the 1861 Census. In the 1861 Census Nichol was 60 years old, farmer, Presbyterian, and born in Scotland; and Jean was 58 years old, born in Scotland. No documented proof of number of children, but they are listed as believed to be. (More research needs to be done to confirm.) From the Chignecto Post, Sackville, NB, 25 Apr 1878: "While Nicholas Gass of Manners Sutton was driving a boar pig into his pen, the other day he was turned upon by the ferocious animal which bit him, inflicting a wound from which he bled to death in a few minutes." (Note: The gravestone in Harvey Settlement Cemetery gives Nichol's death year as 1871, and possibly the gravestone was placed in the cemetery at a later date and the correct death date was perhaps 1878.) He married Jean Copeland. Born 1803 in Scotland. Died 1872 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Religion Presbyterian. They had the following children: 2 i. Thomas Gass 3 ii. Joseph Gass 4 iii. Jane Gass 5 iv. Janet Gass 6 v. Isabella Editha Gass Second Generation ************************************************** 2.

  • The Horan Family Diaspora Since Leaving Ireland 191 Years Ago
A Genealogical Report on the Descendants of Michael Horan and Mary Minnock by A.L. McDevitt Introduction The purpose of this report is to identify the descendants of Michael Horan and Mary Minnock While few Horans live in the original settlement locations, there are still many people from the surrounding areas of Caledon, and Simcoe County, Ontario who have Horan blood. Though heavily weigh toward information on the Albion Township Horans, (the descendants of William Horan and Honorah Shore), I'm including more on the other branches as information comes in. That is the descendants of the Horans that moved to Grey County, Ontario and from there to Michigan and Wisconsin and Montana. I also have some information on the Horans that moved to Western Canada. This report was done using Family Tree Maker 2012. The Genealogical sites I used the most were Ancestry.ca, Family Search.com and Automatic Genealogy. While gathering information for this report I became aware of the importance of getting this family's story written down while there were still people around who had a connection with the past. In the course of researching, I became aware of some differences in the original settlement stories. I am including these alternate versions of events in this report, though I may be personally skeptical of the validity of some of the facts presented. All families have myths. I feel the dates presented in the Land Petitions of Mary Minnock and the baptisms in the County Offaly, Ireland, Rahan Parish registers speak for themselves. Though not a professional Genealogist, I have the obligation to not mislead other researchers.

Family of Robert Jones and Mary Bell compiled by John A. Brebner for the Friends of Sandbanks 26th October, 2020 Generation One 1. Robert Jones #75254, b. c. 1780 in County Armagh, Ireland,1,2 occupation Farmer in Hillier Township, d. 30 August 1870 in Hillier Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario,1,2 buried in Christ Church Cemetery, Hillier Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario.2 . The Jones Family Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, 1904; (pages 447 - 452) "Born in the County of Armagh, Ireland, in 1780, of Welsh-Irish parentage, Robert Jones, the pioneer of the Jones family in Prince Edward County, belonged to a class of farmers in Ireland, though heavily handicapped as lease- holders and often rack-rented, have always given a good account of themselves. To Robert was given as good an education as his prospects demanded and the times permitted; and he also received a thoroughly good agricultural training on the family homestead, until he was of age to begin farming on his own account. This he did, at the same time marrying Mary Bell, the daughter of a neighbouring farmer, and of the same age as himself. The farm he chose was cultivated by him for twenty years, during which time all his sons and daughters, to the number of eleven, were born. "His determination to emigrate was not prompted by failure to succeed in farming in Ireland, but rather to the need he felt of securing a much larger holding for himself and his sons, and one that he should hold on better terms.
