To my sons… Then in a moment to my view The stranger started from disguise; The tokens in his hands I knew; The Savior stood before mine eyes. He spake, and my poor name he named, "Of me thou hast not been ashamed; These deeds shall thy memorial be, Fear not, thou didst them unto me." A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief Preface to Members of the Ellsworth and McArthur Handcart Companies of 1856 It has been my purpose in preparing this compilation of vital statistical information to show my appreciation for the Ellsworth and McArthur Handcart Companies. Unfortunately, some of the statistical information recorded by the members and their posterity was inaccurate, conflicting, or incomplete. Where possible, research was done to alleviate this problem The compiled information was gathered and used as a secondary source for submitting pioneer names for temple work to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Genealogical Department. As a result of this study over 200 ordinances were identified and performed for members of the Ellsworth and McArthur Handcart Companies in the Provo Temple. • Edmund Barton and the 1897 Federal Convention
The Art of Consensus: Edmund Barton and the 1897 Federal Convention The Art of Consensus: Edmund Barton and the 1897 Federal Convention* Geoffrey Bolton dmund Barton first entered my life at the Port Hotel, Derby on the evening of Saturday, E13 September 1952. As a very young postgraduate I was spending three months in the Kimberley district of Western Australia researching the history of the pastoral industry. Being at a loose end that evening I went to the bar to see if I could find some old-timer with an interesting store of yarns. I soon found my old-timer. He was a leathery, weather-beaten station cook, seventy-three years of age; Russel Ward would have been proud of him. I sipped my beer, and he drained his creme-de-menthe from five-ounce glasses, and presently he said: ‘Do you know what was the greatest moment of my life?’ ‘No’, I said, ‘but I’d like to hear’; I expected to hear some epic of droving, or possibly an anecdote of Gallipoli or the Somme. But he answered: ‘When I was eighteen years old I was kitchen-boy at Petty’s Hotel in Sydney when the federal convention was on. And every evening Edmund Barton would bring some of the delegates around to have dinner and talk about things. I seen them all: Deakin, Reid, Forrest, I seen them all. But the prince of them all was Edmund Barton.’ It struck me then as remarkable that such an archetypal bushie, should be so admiring of an essentially urban, middle-class lawyer such as Barton.

  • Sir George Houstoun REID, PC, GCB, GCMG Prime Minister 18 August 1904 to 5 July 1905
4 Sir George Houstoun REID, PC, GCB, GCMG Prime Minister 18 August 1904 to 5 July 1905 George Reid became the 4th prime minister after the fall of John Watson’s minority Labor government. He began his political career in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly 1880 representing the seat of East Sydney 1880-84. He held the seat again from October 1885 to July 1894. He moved to the new single member seat of Sydney-King 1894- 1901 when he resigned to enter the federal parliament. Member of the Free Trade Party and Premier of NSW 1894-99. First federal opposition leader 1901-04 and 1905-08. Reid’s term in office ended on the 5 July 1905 after losing Protectionist Party support. He was replaced by Alfred Deakin. Main achievements (1895-1905) In NSW reformed the colony’s economic arrangements and secured support for a new Crown Lands Act 1895 and Public Service Act 1895. Pre-1903: Key, if albeit misunderstood figure in the Federation movement and the establishment of the Australian Constitution. In 1895 Reid steered through the Australian Federation Enabling Act in NSW. Reid in a speech during the 1898 Federation referendum campaign told New South Wales voters he would personally support Federation and the Constitution Bill, but outlined reservations the voters should consider before taking any decision. He became known as ‘Yes/No’ Reid. Arguably the ‘Yes/No’ speech led to a better Constitution. Without his somewhat ambivalent support, NSW might not have come into the Commonwealth. He played a prominent role in the debate over the location of the national capital.

Using cultural theories such as Anderson’s “Imagined Communities” and Hobsawm and Ranger’s “Imagined Traditions,” this paper pays special attention to the Celtic traditions and myths that Welsh leaders utilized to cultivate a sense of nationalism and foster a political identity that gained prominence in the nineteenth century. This nationalism will also be presented in the context of cultural changes that Wales faced during this time, especially industrialization and Romanticism.
