Notes for William Dooley Source: Mary A. Tobin, my aunt who was a great granddaughter.

Oral history indicates that William was from County . Supposedly he landed in Cape Breton Island, at Cape Breton (a village on the North Eastern Shore of the island). Supposedly, he made his way to North Sydney (North Bar) where he was greeted by the Ormonds, who had emigrated from Lismore, Waterford County. If he knew the family before he left Ireland, it would mean that he probably lived south of Lismore such as Youghal, Mitchelstown, or one of the Cork Villages along the Blackwater River like Glendine.

At various times, he was a grocer and a laborer.

Note about her date of birth: Date of Birth on the record (10 Sep 1849) is from her Baptism Record. A Census record indicates a date of birth of 10 Sept. 1849. The 1901 Census record indicates her year of birth was 1852.

Automated Census of 1901: Tobin Hanorah K. F Head W Sep 10 1852 48 Tobin Mary Elizabeth F Daughter S May 21 1874 26 Tobin John Francis M Son S Aug 21 1882 18 Tobin Perci James M Son S Nov 6 1885 15 Tobin Josephine B. F Daughter S Sep 10 1886 14

Her marriage record indicates that she was 10 years younger than Richard.

Oral history indicates that she was 18 when my grandfather William Richard was born. In fact, she was nearly 21.

Her death certificate of August 26, 1932 lists her as Hanora C living at St. Theresa's Retreat 300 Barrington in Halifax. The informant was Sister Loretta Tobin, her daughter.

Obituary was in the Antigonish CASKET. Date of death in the CASKET was August 26, 1932. St. Joseph Parish record indicates that she died on November 13, 1932. (The late date may have been so that living children could attend the funeral). I use the death certificate and the Casket date!

Notes for Richard Francis Tobin Lived at 52 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Seems that he was based in Channel Newfoundland, St. Pierre, and North Sydney.

The following appeared in the North Sydney Newspaper under the heading: Thrilling Escape from Death - Forty-eight hours in the Rigging of a Sunken Vessel, then Rescued by Life Lines.

North Sydney, Nova Scotia, May 8, 1895: Capt. R.H. Tobin of North Sydney, has arrived home, having lost his schooner, the Freddie Walter, on the Penguin Islands, which consist of 22 rocks about ten miles from the rock bound coast, where many a good ship and crew have met their fate. Capt. Tobin left St. Pierre on the 19th ult. for this port in ballast. The following Tuesday morning, a heavy breeze from the southwest came up. The pumps got choked. They headed for Burgo. She was then about 80 miles from St. Pierre. The weather became too thick to make Burgo; wore ship again; the pumps being now free, and the course shaped for Miquelon. The wind veered southerly, increasing to a gale, the foresail was carried away and the storm trisail was bent in its stead. The foresail was repaired and set and the captain went down in his cabin to take his position. While examining his charts, he heard his crew shout "breakers". He at once rushed on deck and grabbed the helm and put it to port. He was just a minute too late, for the vessel struck on thewestern end of the rocks. The Captain shouted to stand by the ship. One poor fellow, Thomas Power of Placentia Nfld. jumped for the rock and was not seen afterwards. Two others jumped and landed safely on the rock. The vessel lurched off the rock and began to sink rapidly, and about half a mile further down a break was seen in the rocks into which she was driven. She sank to the sheer poles, and the captain and another man took to the rigging, where they remained for forty-eight hours. She struck at 10.30 a. m. on Tuesday the 23rd ult. The first night they were in the rigging, the bottom was knocked out of the vessel. Some fishing boats took the men off with difficulty. If the wind had not subsided the men on the rock would have been washed away. As it was they were hauled through the water to the fishing boats with the aid of life lines and were greatly exhausted. Published in the Newfoundland Ancestor, 21/1/046.

The Census of 1901 lists his wife as a Widow so he died before March 1901.

Biographical Sketch: David A. Hearn (February 14, 1853 – ) was a lawyer and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Richmond County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1886 to 1890 as a Liberal-Conservative member. He was born in Arichat, Nova Scotia, the son of James Hearn, of Irish origin, and Isabella Campbell, who came from Scotland. He was educated in Arichat and was called to the Nova Scotia bar in 1878. In 1879, he married Elizabeth Ida Quinan at Sacred Heart in Sydney. David and Elizabeth had 3 sons: Joseph Cleveland (B 9 Sep 1884), James Wilfred Laurier (B 20 Nov. 1894) and Francis G.H. (B 19 July 1896). The 2 younger sons were baptized at Sacred Heart in Sydney.

Hearn served as a member of the council for Richmond County, as a school commissioner and was a census commissioner in 1881. In 1891, he moved his practice to Sydney. Hearn advocated the abolition of the province's Legislative Council. He married Bridget Mary Ormond in 1905 following the death of his first wife. In 1907, he was named King's Counsel. Hearn was a member of the Knights of Columbus and at one time was president of the Nova Scotia Barristers Association.

Joe Petrie's Notes:

1. I wonder if James (David A. Hearn's father) and John Hearn of Richmond county were related. 2. I wonder if Peter A of Sydney was related. Terry Punch identifies him as being from Waterford County. 3. I wonder if David's first wife Elizabeth Quinan was related to either or both of the two Father Quinan who served at St. Hyacinths in D'Escousse. In the Census of 1871, Elizabeth was living in Sydney with Father James Quinan. I assume that they were siblings. 4. I can't find David's son Joseph in the Census of 1911. Maybe he was not enumerated.

Notes for William Richard Tobin "WR" Sources:

Oral History: From Miss Mary (May) A. Tobin (WR's eldest daughter) and from me, Joe Petrie (a grandson).

Genealogical Libraries: The Antigonish Casket newspaper articles were read at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia (PANS). Newspaper articles about WR’s activities in North Sydney and Glace Bay were read at the Beaton Institute in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Also material was gathered at the Newfoundland Archives in St John's. Finally, material was gathered at the New England Historical Genealogical Society (NEHGS) Library in Boston.

Books: Seary, E. R. Family names of the Island of Newfoundland / E.R. Seary, with the assistance of Sheila M.P. Lynch, St. John's : Memorial University of Newfoundland, 1998. I read the book at the NEHGS Library in Boston.

College: Dalhousie in Halifax.

Newspapers: RC Diocese of Antigonish, the CASKET. The Cape Breton Post. I read both at Libraries.

Web Sites: cbgen.org for the Dooley Funeral Home records and for Holy Cross Cemetery records, novascotiagenealogy.org, Ancestry Library.com, Ancesrty.org for the Censuses of 1881 - 1921; Ancesrty.CA and FamilySearch.org/Collections/List/ for the RC Diocese of Antigonish Parish Marriage Record.

According to my aunt May Tobin, William Richard (aka Will and WR) was born in Argentia, Newfoundland in August 1870. (The Census of 1911 listed his birth as August 1870.) As she told it, her grandparents were returning via their boat to their home in Channel from visiting family in eastern Newfoundland. Aunt May indicated that her grandmother went into labor. They landed in Argentia Newfoundland where my Aunt May claimed that WR was born.

Grandfather listed Channel as his birthplace on official documents.

One day at the New England Historic Genealogical Society Library, I read in Seary's book about the Hogan, Mackey and Tobin Surnames in Newfoundland. It listed a William Tobin who was baptized in Channel in 1870. I secured a copy of a Baptismal Certificate for grandfather's baptism in Channel at a mission church. The priest who performed the ceremony recorded it as 1870. His mother's brother Percy was his godfather. The document was provided by a volunteer at the Newfoundland Archives in St. Johns.

Grandfather and his sister Mary Elizabeth were the only children born in Newfoundland. The rest of the children were born in North Sydney.

I think that WR attended Dalhousie in Halifax until about 1890. He was 20. Dalhousie’s Alumni 0ffice confirmed that he attended but did not graduate. I think that he left Dalhousie to join the service and to read for the Bar exam.

He was a member of the United Empire Service League which at the time required the candidate to have been a service member. His grave in Holy Cross Cemetery in North Sydney has a marker for the United Empire Service League which was re-named 3 years after he passes away to the Canadian Legion. A photo of his grave marker is in cbgen.org/Records/Cemetery.

I wonder whether the William Tobin who was born in 1870 and served in the 63rd Regiment, Halifax Rifles was my grandfather. The regiment had previously served in the North West Rebellion, 1885. (Note that there was a Tobin family living in Halifax at the time. Terrance Punch, PhD, wrote his Master's Thesis on a Halifax Tobin family.)

WR's enlistment must have been short because in the Census of 1891, he was identified as a Law Student. He read for the Bar. On October 5, 1893, the CASKET newspaper of the Diocese of Antigonish reported that he passed his Law Exams. On July 23, 1895, the CASKET reported that he took the FINAL Law Exams. On Sept. 19, 1895, the CASKET reported that he passed the FINAL Law Exams. On October 24, 1895, the CASKET reported that he was admitted to the Bar on October 17, 1895. I read the Newspaper articles at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia in Halifax.

In 1896, WR advertised that he was a Barrister - Solicitor - Attorney at Law - Conveyancer practicing across from the Hotel Vendome in North Sydney.

In North Sydney, he was a Councilor.

Sometime about 1901 - 1902, he moved to Glace Bay. I'm speculating that Grandfather wanted to move on because Glace Bay was starting to boom, because he and his wife had lost their first child, a son (buried in Old St. Joseph’s in North Sydney) and because his father died about 1900 - 1901. (His mother was listed in the Census of 1901 as a widow.)

Aunt May was born in 1902 in Glace Bay.

Also, in 1902, he was a member of the Glace Bay Rugby Team, the championship team. I have a team newspaper photo. From the photo, he appears to have been the Coach. He was the only one not in uniform.

He was an Alderman in Glace Bay.

He was the town solicitor.

He was a Commissioner (an appointed member) of the Glace Bay School Board.

In 1907, he was visiting his mother at her Archbold St North Sydney home when he noticed fire coming from St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Convent St. According to my aunt, grandfather raced to the church and saved the sacred vessels.

Mother and my aunt always thought that his death in 1922 was sudden. In reality, he died of a heart condition that had been diagnosed about a year before.

He was stricken in the Court House and taken to his home (on the way to St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay). He died before he reached the hospital. His death certificate is in novascitiagenealogy.com.

Interestingly, the Death Certificate and Dooley Funeral Home records indicate that Grandfather was born in North Sydney in March 1870. (I believe that the Dooley record was the source of the Death Certificate.) My mother and Aunt May supposedly were the informants. I doubt that they were because they were in Halifax preparing to travel to Glace Bay when their father passed away.

I think that my Aunt's oral history on his birth place and date is correct. She visited Newfoundland a number of times to collect information. Also the oral information was collected after she discussed the facts with her Tobin grandmother and aunts (Sr. Maria Loretta, SCH and Sr. Joseph Aloysia, SCH.) She learned that her Tobin grandfather was not from St Johns, Newfoundland. She found that the March date of birth for her father and the place of birth were incorrect. She also found that that a March date was not logical because March was not suitable for a pregnant woman to travel. As a result the August birth date is the date that I always use. I do not believe that grandfather's mother would have been visiting relatives in March.

In the Census of 1901, his birth year was lasted as 1869.

Now, if I only had a copy of an obituary!

Notes: Source: My Aunt, Mary A (May) Tobin May Tobin was the true genealogist of the North Sydney Tobins, Dooleys, Ormonds etc.. May was visually impaired. Imagine, not being able to write about your research. When she was twelve in 1914, she was inoculated against diseases that were brought back to Canada by returning soldiers. As a result of an allergic reaction to the inoculation, May was left almost totally visually impaired. Within ten years, she lost both parents while being educated at Mount Saint Vincent in Halifax. Financial difficulties due to the death of her father, forced May to leave the Mount and live at the School for the Blind in Halifax. From there, she completed her Normal School education. She taught French at the School for the Blind for over 40 years. She completed her career in Middle Musquoduobit. May established a three year cycle of: a summer of school, a summer with my family, a summer of travel to wonderful places - the world capitals in Europe, the shrines in Europe, shrines in Ireland, major cities in Canada and the USA. Her last international trip in the early 1980s was to Australia and Fiji. May taught me French. I was so fluent that I took 2 years of High School French in the same year. Her Christmases and other holidays were normally spent either with Ted and Nonie Lohnes or with the MacIntyres in Halifax. (Nonie Lohnes was a Tobin first cousin and they traveled together after Ted died.) When she finally retired after 50 years of teaching, she retired with her Normal School Certificate, a Bachelors, and enough credits for a Masters. Not long after she retired, what remained of her eye-sight was lost. She was unable to read. She read Braille documents. She had wonderful readers and writers - she still corresponded with a legion of friends. At my urging, she dictated the oral history on both of my parents' families. May was the best family genealogist that I have ever been exposed to. Her dictated oral histories were amazingly accurate. After she retired from teaching, she retired to St. Patrick's Manor in Halifax. She died there on Christmas Day, 1985. Where do I start to write about Uncle John!

Uncle John worked in the retail and wholesale food business most of his adult life. In North Sydney, he worked in the family and his business. (His father operated a Schooner between Channel, North Sydney and Miquelon-St. Pierre. His father also appeared to be based in Miquelon and Channel. Newfoundland.)

On Nov 7, 1923, his family crossed the border at Vanceboro Maine on their way to Boston. The move was long planned - discussed with his friends and family for at least a year.

Uncle John was employed by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P). He was a Store Manager and eventually moved to the regional headquarters on Atlantic Avenue in Boston. After he retired from the A&P, he worked part-time as a salesman for Statler Tissue Company, a manufacturer of paper napkins, paper towels etc.

While I was in high school, because I used to visit him and Aunt Agatha in their home in Watertown, I had a special relationship with them. Until I saw him on his death bed, I had never seen him without a starched shirt and a tie. Because Mom worked part-time for him at Statler and because I often travelled with Mom and he when he had her working as a "Demonstrator" for him in a store Manchester NH, I'd stay at St. Anselm College with other relatives of the priests. I probably knew him best!

Our family was a frequent visitor to their house in Somerville and in Watertown. I suspect that the family dreaded seeing our family arrive because we three boys were hellions. I thought that the Watertown house was great because one could see Oakley Golf Course.

Uncle John occasionally had the chore of burying his siblings. It took a special person to attend to all the details. He buried my grandfather and his sister Josephine (Aunt Josie).

After Aunt Agatha died, Uncle John lived with his daughter Tippi.

Children of John Francis Tobin and Catherine Agatha MacIsaac "Agatha" were as follows: 100 i Pierce John5 Tobin "Fr. Ben", born 12 Sep 1919 in North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada; died 21 Mar 1984 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA; buried 24 Mar 1984 in St Leander's Cemetery, St. Anselm Abbey, Bedford, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, USA. Notes: Father Benedict J. Tobin, OSB was a Benedictine priest at St. Anselm Abbey in Bedford, NH. Father Ben was named Pierce after his granduncle Pierce (who in turn as was the Irish custom was probably named for his grandfather). At a very early age, Father Ben rebelled at being called Percy and announced that he wanted to be called Jackie. He attended school in North Sydney, Somerville, and at Boston College High School in Boston. He went on to Boston College from BC High. After 2 years at Boston College, he left to enter the priesthood. He graduated from St. Anselm College in Manchester NH. Jackie always wanted to become a priest and applied for the Jesuits while at Boston College. He was not accepted - too many applicants and not enough facilities. One day that summer, he gave two Nuns a ride and in the conversation one remarked that he should try the Benedictines at St. Anselm Monastery in Manchester NH. He and two friends applied, were accepted, professed vows together, and were ordained together in Manchester NH on May 30. 1946. His first Solemn Mass was on June 9, 1946. Father Ben took the vow of Stability, forever linking him to St. Anselm Abbey. During the period before his ordination, he took assignments in New Jersey along with other monks of St. Anselm. Ben and Fathers Justin Mahoney, Jeremiah Ahearn, Andrew Lavallee, Felix Pepin, Charles Tucke monks of Saint Anselm, all became much loved confreres in both Newark and Morristown. He did graduate work in the Classics in Canada and taught Latin at St. Anselm College from the 40s into the 60s. He also did part-time parish work in New Hampshire. One year he built an out-door skating rink at St Anselm College. (The site is where the Library Building was built.) In the 1960s, he took parish assignments in Louisiana and in Iowa. After completing the parish assignments, he lived with his sister's family in Massachusetts - because the new Abbot thought that he had renounced his vow of Stability and left the Benedictine Order. After he returned to the Abbey, he was a frequent guest at my parents' house. After my Dad died, because Mom did not drive, he and my Mom were frequently transported to St. Mary's in Dedham for him to say Mass by friends. Father Ben and Mom even used the Senior Citizen Bus for transportation for him to say Mass. In the latter part of his life, he was frequently hospitalized in Boston at St. John of God Hospital and St. Elizabeth's Hospital. For the last few years of his adult life, he probably spent more time in Boston hospital than at the Monastery. Father Benedict died in Boston and is buried in St. Leander's Cemetery at St. Anselm's Abbey in Bedford, New Hampshire. Father Ben never became a naturalized US citizen. Notes for Loretta Elizabeth Tobin "Ethel" Sources: Her sister's Oral History

Web Sites: Ancestry, FamilySearch.org, novascotiagenealogy.com and cbgen.org

My mother was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Mom was christened at St. Anne's in Glace Bay.

Because of her mother's illness (breast cancer), Mom was sent to Mount Saint Vincent Academy in Halifax as a teenager. She graduated in 1921 at age 17.

After she graduated in 1921 she attended Mount Saint Vincent College. She also began reading for the Bar. The game plan was to join her father in his law firm when she graduated from college.

In 1922, when her father passed away, she was a sophomore at Mount St. Vincent College. She completed the year and returned to Glace Bay to teach at St. Anne's. She taught at St. Anne's until 1926. She was hired as a teacher because she met the minimum requirement of 2 years of college.

During her summer vacations from 1922 to 1925, she worked for the Dominion Coal Company in Glace Bay. In 1926, because of the miner's strike, Mom left Glace Bay to work in Boston for the summer-time. She lived with Helen Casey who had gone to school with Mom both in Glace Bay and at Mount St. Vincent.

She was supposed to return to St. Anne's in September 1926 but because of a commitment in Boston, she requested approval to have a substitute teacher fill-in for her for a few days. The school board disapproved the request. She was terminated.

In late September 1926, she returned to Glace Bay, packed her belongings etc. She returned to Boston via Halifax to see her sister. On October 2, 1926, she was pre-examined in Halifax for her return by ship to Boston, She was listed as an Alien student. Her pre- examination record was filed in the US Records Office under the name of Elizabeth Loretta Tobin. (I assume that the inspector messed up my Mother's Given name.)

In 1931, my Dad and Mom were married. Helen Casey was Mom's maid of honor.

Mom met Leo Petrie, from Dominion, married him and had 5 pregnancies. In 1936, the Petrie family moved to Dedham where we 3 sons attended St. Mary's Grammar School..

On January 16, 1939. she was naturalized under the name of Lorretta Elizabeth Petrie. (Note the spelling of the name Lorretta - with 2 Rs. I assume it was a clerical error in the District Court. Mom must have gagged when she had to sign it as Lorretta.) Soon after naturalization, Mom changed her legal name to Ethel T. Petrie.

In 1946, after I started school, Mom returned to work. She had a variety of jobs. She was a bookkeeper and clerk at Rosen's Hardware. She was a bookkeeper and clerk at North American Aluminum. She was a partner at Atlantic Aluminum. She was a clerk at Tobe Deutchmann Electronics. She was a cashier at Stop and Shop. She was a bookkeeper at the Dedham Transcript and at Ziegler's Market. In addition, she was a substitute teacher in the Dedham school system. Also, she demonstrated consumer products for two manufacturers at local retail grocery stores.

Dad and Mom's house was always full of relatives and friends. Often, we kids would go to bed and wake up the next day on couches because our parents needed beds for guests. My Mom's sister stayed with us every third summer. Molly Petrie (Mary Campbell Petrie - mother of Daniel Mannix Petrie who won multiple Emmys) stayed with us every January and April!. Many of Mom's Cape Breton Dooley and Tobin cousins often visited.

Mom also taught at home - private tutoring neighbor's children and her kids. It was a pro bono, volunteer activity which she loved.

Both of my parents were really into pro bono volunteering. My wife and I continued the volunteering especially when I was in college and when our children were students in Norwood.

In the 1950s, Mom became active in the local chapter of the Mount Saint Vincent's Alumnae Association. For over two decades she served as President or as another officer in the chapter.

Hobbies: Traveling to Canada. Playing cards, teaching her 10 grandchildren to play cards, ironing, crossword puzzles, reading novels, and writing poetry.

Mom died in her sleep of a stroke.

Notes for Leo Ignatius Petrie Oral history: My parents

Web Sites. Ancestry, Census 1911 and 1921 and US Border Crossing Records; novascitoagenealogy.com;

Leo Ignatius Petrie was born in his late grandparents' bed in Bridgeport NS, what is now Gardiner Mines, Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, Canada. My aunt Dorothy claimed that Dad was born in what is now Dominion. (Dominion was chartered on July 1, 1906 - after Dad was born.) In fact, if he was born at home in his parents' house, that would have been true.

In 1920, Dad shows up in a Border Crossing Index as Leo Petries, going to South Boston with his mother, older sister Hazel, younger brothers, and younger sister.

On his US Border Crossing Record in Vanceboro Maine for March 30, 1925, Dad indicated that he was born in Bridgeport, NS on May 12, 1906. This is important because there is no Birth record for my Dad. It is also important because it is a few documents that I have that I know he actually signed.

As part of the paperwork process to become a US citizen, a christening record was provided but I have not entered the data because oral history indicated that the church records were lost in a fire and that the christening record provided to the Court was based on a Church Census record. Dad was naturalized in 10 March 1941 in Boston.

In the 1911 Automated Census of Canada Dad was enumerated with his family, under a Peterie Surname. His first name must have not been legible because it shows as: "?".

Dad had a sixth grade education. He left school in Dominion in 1918 when he was twelve which was common at the time.

Between 1918 and 1922, Dad came to Boston where he lived with a cousin in Dorchester. He worked at the Upham's Corner Market. While still under age, he along with a bunch of minors working at the market was "pinched" for truancy. A court officer suggested that he and others enroll in the Electricity program at Charlestown High School and Dad became an electrician as a result.

Between 1918 and 1925, Dad often returned to Dominion where he would work for his father in the family's market.

In 1925, as a result of the miner's strike, Dad returned to Boston after his sister Hazel because of "hard-times" in Dominion. On March 30 1925, for example, his border crossing with his father was recorded at Vanceboro, Maine.

Later, that year, he was joined by his mother, brothers Russell, Roy and sister Dorothy. His mother worked as a domestic while his siblings attended St. Mary's in Brookline.

Dad met Mom, Ethel Tobin, in 1926 at an ice skating party. They married in 1931 during the Depression. Dad was concerned about finances. Mom was not concerned - because they both were employed.

He worked at the Rhodes Brothers Market in Brookline and in Boston's Back Bay until the early thirties. He later worked at the ECCO stores (the forerunner of Stop and Shop) until he was injured on the job in 1938. He was on Welfare and Workman's Compensation until he went to work in September of 1939 at the Fore River Shipyard as an Electrician. From June until August of 1939, the family lived in Dominion. My brothers and I are dual citizens because Dad registered our Births in Cape Breton in 1939. Dad had applied for US Citizenship but had not been naturalized..

Dad became a citizen on 10 March 1941. The file number was: 5181590. The Petition Number was: 11883.

In 1946, he left the shipyard for a short stint at Westinghouse Electric in Readville, Mass. From 1946 until he retired in the early 1970's, he worked at Ziegler's Market in Dedham initially as a meat cutter and later as the Manager.

Dad loved to have a good time, to visit with relatives and friends, to play cards (poker, cribbage and 45s), to go home to Dominion every three years, to look at new cars (bought one every three years), to buy new clothes (two suits, a new top coat and hat each year), and to work on home improvements. Other recreation involved sports: hockey (Bruins), baseball (Braves and later the Red Sox), pro football (Browns, Giants), golf (because we boys caddied and played it), and going to race tracks (especially when his 3 sons worked at race tracks).

Proudest moments revolved around Mom and his three boys. Because Dad never graduated from school, he was especially proud that all his boys graduated from college. My parents attended all our graduations.

Dad died of mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, after a short illness. Mesotheliomia was a common killer of shipyard electricians because they pulled the wires over fixtures that were freshly coated with asbestos.

He is buried in Mount Saint Benedict's Cemetery in Boston's West Roxbury section.

Children of Loretta Elizabeth Tobin "Ethel" and Leo Ignatius Petrie were as follows: 130 i Leo Ignatius6 Petrie, born 30 Jul 1934 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA; died 5 Dec 1991 in Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA; buried 9 Dec 1991 in Canton, Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA. Notes: Leo Ignatius Petrie Jr. was born at Boston City Hospital. Because of his medical condition (liver problems), he was baptized that day as John Petrie. When he was very young, our parents moved to Dedham where he attended St. Mary's Parochial School. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Boston in 1952. After working for a year as an Air Conditioner and Refrigeration repairman, he joined the Navy in August 1953. He was trained as a Pipefitter in Norfolk Virginia and assigned to the USS Cotten, DD669, a destroyer in the Atlantic fleet. While on the Cotten, Leo traveled to the North Sea, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, South America and the Caribbean. When he left the service, he went to Prep School as a prerequisite to entering Northeastern University in Boston. He entered college in 1958 and graduated in 1963. From 1959 to 1963 he worked nearly full-time while he attended classes. His employer allowed him to work off-hours while he took morning and afternoon classes. His major was Accounting with a Cost Accountant specialty. Professionally, he only had two employers: Elliott Addressing Machine in Cambridge and Randolph Mass and Foxboro Company in Mansfield and Foxboro Mass. At Foxboro he specialized in Plant Accounting with stints as an Administrative Officer. He retired in his early 50s due to a Foxboro downsizing (and because he could afford to). My brother loved to fish. He especially loved to fish - when he was n his early teens he'd take his catch to my Dad's store to be prepared for sale and then he'd go to customers' houses and sell the fresh fish. Leo also loved to play cribbage, go to Red Sox and Patriot Games, play golf, and watch TV. After he retired, he became reclusive - the TV became addictive! Five days before he died, he tripped on a shoelace, fell and broke his collarbone. He was home alone and was discovered over 12 hours later. (Polly was out shopping for Christmas Presents.) The next day, Leo was admitted to the hospital and because of "problems with his vitals" scheduled for surgery for the following Friday. On Thursday, blot clots broke loose and traveled to his heart, lungs and brain. He died that day! He is buried in Knollwood Cemetery. Source: Joe Petrie 131 ii William Edmund6 Petrie, born 2 Aug 1935 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA; died 19 Aug 1935 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA; buried 22 Aug 1935 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. Notes: William Edmund was born prematurely and was not expected to survive more than a few hours. After 5 days, he was sent home from the hospital because he met the minimum weight requirements and was not expected to survive the day. He died 10 days later. He is buried with my parents in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery. Source: Joe Petrie 132 iii Charles Edward6 Petrie, born 14 Dec 1936 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. Notes: Our Dad used to say that "Chuck was a 'Natural' salesman who could sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo." Chuck has been in sales since 1961 after a stint working at a friend's lumber yard and working as an accountant. Life has not always been kind to Chuck. When he was in the 5th grade at St. Mary's in Dedham, he was shot in the mouth and nearly died. Recovery took nearly a year with two hospitalizations and damage to teeth, tongue, windpipe, neck and a lung. When he was 17 and President of his High School class, he was hospitalized with TB for nearly a year. One lobe of a lung had to be removed. He returned to High School a year later to complete his senior year as a requirement for College. He graduated as a Dean's List student from Boston College in 1960. He had a wonderful career in sales. Usually, he is the top salesman in the organization, or region, or nation or worldwide. Chuck retired in November 2001. Source: Joe Petrie 133 iv Joseph Francis6 Petrie, born 12 May 1939 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA; christened in Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA. Notes: In 1938, Dad had an on-the-job accident and was still in a cast when I was born on his birthday. As a result of a dispute between his employer and his union, the family was living on welfare. I was born in a welfare bed at Carney Hospital and the bill for the delivery was subsidized by St. Mary's Parish in Dedham where I went to grammar school (graduating in 1953). Shortly after my Christening in 1939, our family moved back to Dominion NS where we lived in a flat over grandfather's store. We returned in August so that my brother Leo could start first grade in Dedham at St. Mary's School. Like my brothers before me, I graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain (in 1957). I graduated from St. Anselm College in Manchester New Hampshire in 1962. My legacy at St. A's is the Society of King Edward, a fraternal organization that I founded in 1958. Its purpose is humanitarian works on and off-campus. I was the founding President and served until Oct. 1959. (In 1959, I left school due to an illness and was trained in computers for occupational therapy.) In 1962, I married Ellen whom I met while at St. Thomas High School. After our honeymoon, I started as a Graduate Assistant at Boston College in Economics and later in 1963 became a Teaching Fellow. I had planned to teach at the College level when I completed Graduate School. I earned 51 credit hours toward a PhD in Economics and was awarded a Masters in 1967. I never finished the language requirements for the PhD. In 1966, while working on my Doctoral Dissertation, I began work as an Information Specialist at NASA in Cambridge. The position developed into one where I used my computer training. When NASA closed in 1970, I was retained by US DOT. Because US DOT took over the NASA facility, I never changed desks. I worked as a computer specialist for the federal government for much of the ensuing 30+ years. Until I retired on January 4, 2001, I was a computer systems analyst/program manager. Since 1988, I supported the Federal Aviation Administration's Flight Standards Service which has the responsibility for world-wide surveillance of aircraft and airmen. I built and maintained the Flight Standards Automation System (FSAS), he Flight Standard's "flagship" system containing the results of their surveillance (about 5 million records per year). FSAS is another of my legacies. From 2001 - 2011, I worked part-time as an Adjunct Professor of Computer Literacy at MassBay Community College in Wellesley Hills, the former Academy of the Assumption. It was formerly operated by the Sisters of Charity of Halifax and was where we often visited our Tobin Grandaunts who were Sisters of Charity of Halifax. My hobby is genealogy. I have been working on my parents’ families and my wife's families for over 30 years. After I retired from MassBay in 2011, I volunteered as a genealogist at local libraries: specifically at: Norwood's Morrill Memorial Library, Walpole, Dedham, Genealogy Library at Irish Cultural Centre of New England in Canton and Friends of Irish Research in Brockton MA. I have given genealogy seminars at those libraries. Also, I have given seminars at the Brockton, Norwood and Walpole Senior Centers. In addition, I have given a seminar at the Walpole Historical Society. Also, I have given workshops at the Norwood Morrill Memorial Library, Dedham Library and the Walpole Senior Citizen Center. I conduct one-on-ones at the Genealogy Library at Irish Cultural Centre of New England in Canton. Finally, I am a founding Member of the Friends of Irish Research in Brockton MA. My other genealogy memberships are: Association of Professional Genealogists (APG); New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS); Family History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (FHSNL); and Cape Breton Genealogy and Historical Association (CBGHA). My published genealogy articles are on friendsofirishgenealogy.org and my published computer book is available on Amazon.com. Source: Joe Petrie

He was responsible for the Halifax Herald Ten Mile Marathon, the Halifax Herald Full Marathon, and the Halifax Herald Forty Five Mile Bicycle Race.

Ahern established the original Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 1958. He collected and donated many of the items that were first on display at the old Industrial Building at the Halifax Forum complex. The Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame came into existence through the work of J.E. (Gee) Ahern The Hall was initiated in response to Kingston Ontario's claim on the origin of hockey as Ahern believed that James G.A. Creighton of Halifax had taken the original rules called the Halifax rules to McGill University in Montreal. Ahern felt that there should be recognition. After an in-depth look at all aspects of sport in Nova Scotia it was decided to broaden the original concept and develop the Hall of Fame to honour all sports and a Board of Directors was appointed in 1958. The Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame was officially opened on November 3rd, 1964 at the Industrial Building at the Halifax Forum complex.

An all-round community person, Ahern was a journalist who served as an Alderman and Mayor for the City of Halifax in the 1940s and also was a member of the Nova Scotia legislature in the 1950s.

I am grateful to Ellen, my wonderful wife who encourages my genealogy volunteering.

Family and Relatives:

The primary source for all of my mother's ancestors was my late aunt May Tobin. She was the true genealogist in our family. She was a remarkable woman. As a result of an allergic reaction to a vaccination in 1914, she lost most of her sight. Very late in her life, she dictated her genealogy research to volunteers who transcribed and sent it to me.

In addition, special thanks to the following cousins: Irene McArthur, George Thorn and our late cousin Douglas Ormond. Their generosity with their records is really appreciated.

Finally, thanks to all my cousins who contributed information on their families; especially, my Tobin cousins (Allie Ahern, Patricia Ahern Bennett, Bernadette Lohnes Gallagher; Nonie Lohnes; Maria Marion; and Cathy Gallagher Sangalang).
