The main goal of the conference was to explore, on one hand the diversity of cultures and languages which went into making Joyce’s world and on the other hand Joyce’s impact on world literature. Finn Fordham (Royal Holloway, University of London) and Richard Brown (University of Leeds) were invited as keynote speakers at the conference. Needless to say, that a special panel was devoted to Joyce’s translations and studies in Georgia. The reception of James Joyce’s works in different European Cultures followed divergent paths, largely depending on the cultural and political climate of the country. When Modernism and Joyce’s works emerged, Georgia, a country with more than a fifteen-century literary tradition, was under the Soviet regime with its strict censorship and ideological purge. Nevertheless, after Stalin’s death Joyce soon became one of the most translated and studied authors in Georgia. We cannot claim big names in Joyce studies and cannot boast to have his works translated as early as in his lifetime. Nevertheless, the fact that most of his works have been translated into a language spoken only by less than 4 million people, the number of works dedicated to Joyce studies in Georgian and two international Conferences held at Tbilisi State University already seem remarkable. It was Nico Kiasashvili, head of the English Department and Centre for Shakespeare Studies at Tbilisi State University who in the 60-70ies laid foundation to Joyce studies in Georgia. A man of great industry and vast contacts with Western colleagues, which was rare at that time, Nico was a real Kulturträger, whose impact on introducing European culture into Georgia as well as raising generations of future translators and scholars can never be underestimated. He published a number of articles introducing writers then unknown in the USSR (Joyce, Lawrence, Pinter, Golding, etc.), translated Giacomo Joyce both into Russian and Georgian from a copy sent to him by Richard Ellmann soon after the publication of the text. He translated Ulysses (first three episodes were printed as early as in 1971 in an almanac; first ten episodes were published as a book with his introduction and commentary in 1983), organized James Joyce Centenary Conference – the first Joyce Conference in the Soviet Union (1982) and edited a book of Collected Papers of the Conference (1984). 7 saerTaSoriso konferencia jeimz joisi da samyaro In 2017 a group of Georgian scholars was awarded a research grant by Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation to carry out the project: James Joyce translations and studies in Georgia. The present Conference and the publication of this volume became possible through the financial support of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation Grant. Manana Gelashvili 8 International Conference JAMES JOYCE AND THE WORLD FINN FORDHAM ROYAL HOLLOWAY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON Joyce’s worlds of words. ‘Whirled without end to end’ (582.20) This paper responds directly to the title of the Tbilisi conference: ‘James Joyce and the World’, which, sounding a broad theme, is a voluminous and fine net to capture any topic, large or small. Rather than flying by its nets, I have chosen - quixotically perhaps – to examine not just Joyce, but ‘the world’, the mesh that we’re in (which should perhaps read ‘the mess that we’re in’ if, like me, you’re from the UK). And I hope from there to begin an exploration of ‘The World According to Joyce’, especially in Finnegans Wake, which was initially conceived by Joyce as a history of the world, and which has become an example, even an emblem, of ‘world literature’. The exploration will be assisted by the word ‘world’, as it is presented in the Oxford English Dictionary (2nd edition), and as it is spun through Joyce’s works. Joyce’s works, I suggest, are located within - and a key contribution to - a period when meanings of ‘the world’ were shifting: one sense of the world (OED sense III.16), the social ‘worldly’ world, had shrunk; while another sense of ‘world’ (OED sense II.10), pointing to a relatively private system, was expanding. In the latter the microcosm of one’s immediate context is inflated through subjectivity into a macrocosm.The many worlds of individual consciousnesses compensate perhaps for the loss of ‘the broader world’, whether held in the safe pair of hands of a transcendent consciousness, or the less safe pair of a liberal social conscience.This shift may suggest a narrative of modernity as fragmentation and alienation, alongside the loss of any transcendent perspective.Joyce’s exploration and reconstruction of private worlds, his expulsion of transcendence through ironisation, makes him a contributor to this worldview.And yet, a new shift has emerged since Joyce’s death: with an awareness of the anthropocene, there is a need for a greater integration of ‘world’ and ‘earth’, and with it a return to a singular real world.Can we find inspiration for doing this in Joyce’s modernist fabular world? University of York Department of Music September 1998 Broadwood Grand Piano of 1801 (Finchcocks Collection, Goudhurst, Kent) Abstract: The Evolution of the Broadwood Grand Piano, 1785-1998 This dissertation describes the way in which one company's product - the grand piano - evolved over a period of two hundred and thirteen years. The account begins by tracing the origins of the English grand, then proceeds with a description of the earliest surviving models by Broadwood, dating from the late eighteenth century. Next follows an examination of John Broadwood and Sons' piano production methods in London during the early nineteenth century, and the transition from small-scale workshop to large factory is noted. The dissertation then proceeds to record in detail the many small changes to grand design which took place as the nineteenth century progressed, ranging from the extension of the keyboard compass, to the introduction of novel technical features such as the famous Broadwood barless steel frame. The dissertation concludes by charting the survival of the Broadwood grand piano since 1914, and records the numerous difficulties which have faced the long-established company during the present century. The unique feature of this dissertation is the way in which much of the information it contains has been collected as a result of the writer's own practical involvement in piano making, tuning and restoring over a period of thirty years; he has had the opportunity to examine many different kinds of Broadwood grand from a variety of historical periods.

    Alexi Matchavariani - Biography - The folk music of his homeland was always of great importance to the Georgian composer Alexi Matchavariani, born on 23 September 1913. In his first works, written in the 1930s, he treated rhythmic and melodic elements of Georgian folksongs. But the progressive tendencies of Soviet music of that period also influenced his work. Matchavariani’s style thus shows a polystylistic dialogue, as a mixture of traditional, Georgian music and contemporary compositional techniques. The musician, recipient of many awards, completed his studies at the Tbilissi Conservatory in 1936. He taught music theory there beginning in 1940 and was appointed professor of composition in 1963. His creative output covers a very broad spectrum: chamber music, romances, symphonies, operas and ballets. The composer’s first major success was the Piano Concerto of 1944, but his real breakthrough only took place in 1950 with the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, a very lyrical work with a special attraction thanks to its combination of diatonic folk music and chromaticism. Matchavariani also earned recognition with the ballet “Othello” in symphonic style. This work was performed abroad a number of times, including in Tokyo, Bucharest and Helsinki, and also in Russia. Matchavariani’s music can be seen as a reflection of his lifelong search for the synthesis of national musical influences and new compositional techniques. Only a few years after the magnificent success of his ballet “Othello” in 1957, Matchavariani decided to tackle an opera based on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” He began writing a libretto in collaboration with the Georgian producer Meliva based on a translation by Ivane Machabeli.

    Restoration report South German or Austrian Tafelklavier c. 1830-40 Andrew Nolan, Broadbeach, Queensland. copyright 2011 Description This instrument is a 6 1/2 octave (CC-g4) square piano of moderate size standing on 4 reeded conical legs with casters, veneered in bookmatched figured walnut in Biedermeier furniture style with a single line of inlaid stringing at the bottom of the sides and a border around the top of the lid. This was originally stained red to resemble mahogany and the original finish appearance is visible under the front lid flap. The interior is veneered in bookmatched figured maple with a line of dark stringing. It has a wrought iron string plate on the right which is lacquered black on a gold base with droplet like pattern similar to in concept to the string plates of Broadwood c 1828-30. The pinblock and yoke are at the front of the instrument over the keyboard as in a grand style piano and the bass strings run from the front left corner to the right rear corner. The stringing is bichord except for the extreme bass CC- C where there are single overwound strings, and the top 1 1/2 octaves of the treble where there is trichord stringing. The top section of the nut for the trichords is made of an iron bar with brass hitch pins inserted at the top, this was screwed and glued to the leading edge of the pinblock. There is a music rack of walnut which fits into holes in the yoke. The back of this rack is hinged in the middle and at the bottom.

Schimmel Piano Manufacturing An Art and a Craft Since time immemorial, music has accompanied mankind. The earliest instrumentological finds date back 50,000 years. The first known musical instrument with fibers under ten sion serving as strings and a resonator is the stick zither. From this small beginning, a vast array of plucked and struck stringed instruments evolved, eventually resulting in the first stringed keyboard instruments. With the invention of the hammer harpsichord (gravi cembalo col piano e forte, “harpsichord with piano and forte”, i.e. with the capability of dynamic modulation) in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori toward the beginning of the eighteenth century, the pianoforte was born, which over the following centuries evolved into the most versitile and widely disseminated musical instrument of all time. Voices of the Electric Guitar Don Curnow MPA 475 12-12-12 Intro The solid body electric guitar is the result of many guitars and innovations that came before it, followed by the guitar's need for volume to compete with louder instruments, particularly when soloing. In the 1930s, jazz and its various forms incorporated the guitar, but at the time there was no way for an acoustic guitar to compete with the volume of a trumpet or saxophone, let alone with an orchestra of trumpets and saxophones, such as in big band jazz. As a result, amplification of the guitar was born and the electric guitar has been evolving since, from a hollow bodied ES-150 arch-top with a pick-up used by Charlie Christian to the Les Paul played by Slash today.

Last weekend Ginny and I travelled over to my brother’s house for a “Tuneful Friday” celebration. http://www.bryanbowers.com/What a collection of terrific musicians came over that night! I spent a fair amount of time that night holding my guitar very quietly – no way I was going to keep up with some of th ose guys. As usual in a gathering of musicians, everyone was very supportive – the best players and the hacks like me all got a nice round of applause after every tune. All of a sudden it was past midnight and folks May 24th remembered that they weren’t going to be able to 7:00 PM sleep in Saturday, and we had to pack it in. I don’t know how the evening passed so quickly. He is chairman of the Byron Centre at Yerevan State University. He earned his PhD in British History at the Academy of Sciences, Moscow. The main fields of his scientific interests are British and American studies, political discourse, language, culture, literature and communication. He is author of more than 70 scientific works, including monographs, text-books, articles and papers. Catherine Addison is a fifth-generation South African who holds the post of professor of English at the University of Zululand, South Africa. After completing a PhD on Byron at the University of British Columbia, Canada, she diversified her interests to include numerous other writers and periods, as well as colonial and postcolonial writing, the prose novel, African women’s fiction, and formal aspects of literature such as versification, narrative, simile and irony. Recently she has focused much of her attention on the verse-novel and in 2017 she published a book on the history of this hybrid genre. Joselyn Almeida-Beveridge is Associate Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she teaches literature of the Age of Revolutions, Atlantic Studies, Classical Reception Studies, and Latino literature. She specializes on the transcultural archive of British and Luso-Hispanic cultures and the relation of global capitalism to slavery and abolition. Her first monograph, Reimagining the Transatlantic, 1780-1890 (2011), theorizes the pan-Atlantic as a region of political, material, and cultural interrelations between Britain, Africa, and the non-Anglophone Americas.

That book was written by my late friend, the great Georgian writer Otar Chiladze, and is called A Man was Going Down the Road. It is translated by Donald Rayfield - the ultimate connoisseur of Georgian and Russian literature. This novel is the earliest by Otar Chiladze, written in 1972. I read it years and years ago when it was initially translated into Russian. As the blurb to the English translation says: I still remember my utter joy when reading this book - as if my mouth was full of Georgian grapes and the taste of the famous Georgian wine, be it Kindzmarauli or Akhasheni, sending my head into a spin. I had the same sensation - maybe even stronger - while reading the English translation of the book. But this time my dizziness came from the autumnal clarity of the language, from the transparency of the prose flow, from the typographic quality of the book. It is as if the Georgian wine of Otar Chiladze's novel has been matured even further in English barrels. Here's an excerpt from it.
