    Alexi Matchavariani - Biography - The folk music of his homeland was always of great importance to the Georgian composer Alexi Matchavariani, born on 23 September 1913. In his first works, written in the 1930s, he treated rhythmic and melodic elements of Georgian folksongs. But the progressive tendencies of Soviet music of that period also influenced his work. Matchavariani’s style thus shows a polystylistic dialogue, as a mixture of traditional, Georgian music and contemporary compositional techniques. The musician, recipient of many awards, completed his studies at the Tbilissi Conservatory in 1936. He taught music theory there beginning in 1940 and was appointed professor of composition in 1963. His creative output covers a very broad spectrum: chamber music, romances, symphonies, operas and ballets. The composer’s first major success was the Piano Concerto of 1944, but his real breakthrough only took place in 1950 with the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, a very lyrical work with a special attraction thanks to its combination of diatonic folk music and chromaticism. Matchavariani also earned recognition with the ballet “Othello” in symphonic style. This work was performed abroad a number of times, including in Tokyo, Bucharest and Helsinki, and also in Russia. Matchavariani’s music can be seen as a reflection of his lifelong search for the synthesis of national musical influences and new compositional techniques. Only a few years after the magnificent success of his ballet “Othello” in 1957, Matchavariani decided to tackle an opera based on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” He began writing a libretto in collaboration with the Georgian producer Meliva based on a translation by Ivane Machabeli.

Joselyn Almeida-Beveridge is Associate Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she teaches literature of the Age of Revolutions, Atlantic Studies, Classical Reception Studies, and Latino literature. She specializes on the transcultural archive of British and Luso-Hispanic cultures and the relation of global capitalism to slavery and abolition.     Tinatin Margalitadze Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University The Comprehensive English-Georgian Online Dictionary and Translation of Shakespeare into Georgian Summary: The Comprehensive English-Georgian Dictionary (CEGD) was posted on the Internet in 2010. It is based on the fourteen fascicles of the Dictionary, published between 1995 – 2012 and comprises 110 000 entries. The aim of the present paper is to describe the methodology of working on a CEGD entry which has enabled the editors to address the needs of not only learners of English but also translators of English belles-lettres, including the works of William Shakespeare. Introduction. The history of European-Georgian lexicography gives a chronographically precise account of both the interest of European nations in Georgia and the Georgian people’s aspirations to and their interest in European countries. The first bilingual dictionary of the Georgian language with respect to European languages was a Georgian-Italian dictionary, compiled by Stefano Paolini with the assistance of the Georgian diplomat Niceforo Irbachi, published in Rome in 1629 (DGI). In the course of the 17th and 18th centuries more Italian-Georgian and Georgian-Italian dictionaries were compiled by Italian missionaries. The famous Georgian writer and lexicographer Sulkhan Saba Orbeliani also included Italian equivalents of some Georgian words in his Dictionary of Georgian (‘Sitkvis Kona’). A Dutch-Georgian word-list (904 words) appeared in the second edition of a Dutch orientalist Nicolaas Witsen’s book Noord en Oost Tartarye (“North and East Tartary”) in 1705, compiled by him and the Georgian nobleman Alexander Bagrationi. At the same period, more bilingual word-lists were created with respect to other European languages (Orlovskaya, 1986; Uturgaidze, 1999).
