Denis Villeneuve When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team—led by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams)—is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers—and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity. Join us as we celebrate another amazing year of films at Closing Night of the 52nd Chicago International Film Festival! Closing Night will be held at AMC River East 21 on Thursday, October 27. Visit www.chicagofilmfestival.com for details. U.S. INDIES American independent highlights from Chicago and beyond Destined Dir. Qasim Basir, U.S. Splitting between dual realities, the profound new drama from Qasim Basir (MoozLum) maps out two vastly different lives for the same young black man in modernday Detroit. After surviving an upbringing in the projects, Rasheed (Corey Hardrict) lives one life trying to escape his home, and the other trying to dominate it. Each story is connected by deception, heartache, and the inevitability of fate. Hunter Gatherer Dir. Josh Locy, U.S. Andre Royo (The Wire, Empire) exudes charisma as Ashley, a middleaged scam artist freshly released from prison. With his family and friends keeping their distance, Ashley turns to Jeremy (George Sample III, star of 2015 Festival selection Cronies), an acquaintance who assists him in illadvised schemes. Joshua Locy skillfully melds humor and pathos in this singular portrait of men grappling with loss in all the wrong ways. Imperfections Dir. David Singer, U.S. In this zany caper film from acclaimed local musician David Singer, a struggling Chicago actress named Cassidy (rising star Virginia Kull) starts a job delivering diamonds on Jewelers Row. After the shop owner’s son reveals his lucrative plan to defraud their insurance company, Cassidy agrees to help fake a robbery. What begins as a simple diamond heist quickly unravels into a wild web of lies, betrayals, and surprises on the meanish streets of the Windy City. Middle Man Dir. Ned Crowley, U.S. (previously announced) From the twisted mind of Chicagoan Ned Crowley and starring fellow native Jim O'Heir (Parks and Recreation’s lovable punching bag Jerry Gergich), this wickedly dark comedy follows Lenny, a nerdy accountant searching for standup comedy fame. But en route to Las Vegas, a mysterious hitchhiker lures Lenny into a violent killing spree—one that accidentally turns him into a comedy sensation. Miles Dir. Nathan Adloff, U.S. Based on a true story and set in notsofaraway 1999, Illinois native Nathan Adloff’s bighearted dramedy follows Miles, a downstate high school boy who joins the girls’ volleyball team. Facing prejudice and protests from rival teams, he eyes an athletic scholarship to Loyola, despite the concerns of his mom (a terrific Molly Shannon) and the objections of his rural community. Bumpsetspike is nothing next to breaking down gender barriers. Pushing Dead Dir. Tom E. Brown, U.S. When Dan’s insurance coverage inexplicably changes, the longtime H.I.V.positive San Franciscan (James Roday, TV’s Psych) suddenly finds he can no longer afford his medication. As Dan tries to stretch what’s left of his lifeline, a loyal support group gives him new reasons to be hopeful. Danny Glover and Robin Weigert costar in this warm sliceoflife dramedy that puts a wry, grounded outlook on living with a debilitating illness. The View from Tall Dirs. Caitlin Parrish and Erica Weiss, U.S. Precocious, isolated, and relentlessly bullied by her classmates, Chicagoland high school senior Justine reluctantly begins therapy in the aftermath of a messy public affair with a teacher. After a rocky first few sessions, she forms an unlikely bond with Douglas, her disabled therapist who nurses demons of his own. Told with a sardonic wit by Chicago theater veterans Caitlin Parrish and Erica Weiss, The View from Tall is a tender story of selfdiscovery at more than one age. Women Who Kill Dir. Ingrid Jungermann, U.S. Brooklynites Jean and Morgan, former life partners, cohost a cult podcast about female serial killers. But when Morgan falls for a mysterious young woman at the food coop, the two begin investigating her past and turn up some disturbing secrets. With sly doses of paranoia, secrecy, and a hint of homicide, Women Who Kill is a neurotic Park Slope mystery that’s deadpan—and almost deadly. AFTER DARK The best in genre cinema from around the world. Amok (Dzgan) Dir. Vardan Tozija, Macedonia Two sharp, introverted boys struggle against a foster care system that is, at best, indifferent and, at worst, wholly corrupt and cruel. While Petar dreams of escape and prosperity, Filip lashes out and forms a gang of “lost boys” hellbent on punishing each of their abusers.

  • Recommended Films: a Preparation for a Level Film Studies
Preparation for A-Level Film Studies: First and foremost a knowledge of film is needed for this course, often in lessons, teachers will reference films other than the ones being studied. Ideally you should be watching films regularly, not just the big mainstream films, but also a range of films both old and new. We have put together a list of highly useful films to have watched. We recommend you begin watching some these, as and where you can. There are also a great many online lists of ‘greatest films of all time’, which are worth looking through. Citizen Kane: Orson Welles 1941 Arguably the greatest film ever made and often features at the top of film critic and film historian lists. Welles is also regarded as one the greatest filmmakers and in this film: he directed, wrote and starred. It pioneered numerous film making techniques and is oft parodied, it is one of the best. It’s a Wonderful Life: Frank Capra, 1946 One of my personal favourite films and one I watch every Christmas. It’s a Wonderful Life is another film which often appears high on lists of greatest films, it is a genuinely happy and uplifting film without being too sweet. James Stewart is one of the best actors of his generation and this is one of his strongest performances. Casablanca: Michael Curtiz, 1942 This is a masterclass in storytelling, staring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. It probably has some of the most memorable lines of dialogue for its time including, ‘here’s looking at you’ and ‘of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine’.

  • The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema
The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Ekky Imanjaya Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies December 2016 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally.

  • Stealing the Show By: Emma Robertson in Damien Chazelle's Hit Movie Musical “La La Land," Heartthrob Ryan Gosling and C
Stealing the Show By: Emma Robertson In Damien Chazelle’s hit movie musical “La La Land," heartthrob Ryan Gosling and charmer Emma Stone come together to artfully portray two struggling performers living in the fast-paced world of Los Angeles. Mia (Stone) is an aspiring actress who has been juggling auditions and her part-time job as a barista at a coffee shop on the Warner Bros. lot. Sebastian (Gosling) is a jazz musician who aspires to open his own jazz club in order to revive the music genre. The two are swept up into a whirlwind romance but must eventually choose between their relationship and their flourishing careers. The musical opens with a dramatic dance number; people who are stuck in standstill traffic pour out of their cars and flood the streets, jumping, dancing and singing. The following few songs are also accompanied by strong choreography, all at the hands of choreographer Mandy Moore. However, as the movie progresses, the music transitions to softer pieces that use the lyrics to propel the plot. Composer Justin Hurwitz works in simple, yet hauntingly beautiful melodies that will get stuck in your head for days. A standout feature of “La La Land” is the acting. Gosling and Stone play their characters with such a naturalness that you may feel almost intrusive at times. In particular, during a scene in which Mia and Sebastian are arguing, it feels as if you are sitting in on a conversation you shouldn’t be because the argument is so realistic and intimate. The actors feel like real people, not like movie characters.

  • Sydney Film Festival Reveals Weird and Wonderful Freak Me out Program
MEDIA RELEASE EMBARGOED UNTIL 10:00 WEDNESDAY 7 MAY SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL REVEALS WEIRD AND WONDERFUL FREAK ME OUT PROGRAM The 61 st Sydney Film Festival today announced six films in the popular and strange Freak Me Out program strand. Dedicated to horror, fantasy, shock, schlock and extreme arthouse cinema, Freak Me Out brings a decidedly demented dimension to SFF. “Freak Me Out is for everyone from hard-core gore hounds and students to cinephiles and mainstream audiences curious about the wild side of cinema,” says SFF Freak Me Out guest programmer, Richard Kuipers . “Freak Me Out embraces material that until recently was largely restricted to genre-specific film festivals. Thanks to many factors including the wealth of information and weird material now available on the Internet, Freak Me Out has been able to capture a substantial audience in a prestigious festival such as SFF.” This selection includes the official Sundance selection title Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead, which follows the entertaining plight of a small zombie squad battling a brutal horde of undead Nazis; Willow Creek , a found-footage horror from iconic indie comedy director Bobcat Goldthwait; horror- musical Stage Fright , in which the cast of a musical theatre summer camp is terrorised by a kabuki- masked, knife-wielding slasher; French comedy-horror film Goal of the Dead , an eclectic combination of soccer and zombies; the first ever Indonesian-Japanese horror film Killers from LA Screamfest award-winning director duo the Mo brothers; and Love Eternal , the recent winner of the inaugural Fresh Blood award at the Black Bear Film Festival in Warsaw, an adaptation of Kei Oishi’s intense Japanese novel ‘Loving the Dead’, set in Ireland.
