INTRODUCTION During the past five years, parents who send their children to school in the morning have had to face the grim possibility, however remote, that their children might be shot and killed by a classmate during the school day. ABC News provides a list of school shootings between 1996 and the present', which is as follows: February 19, 1997: 16 year-old Evan Ramsey opens fire with a shot- gun in a common area at the Bethel, Alaska, high school, killing the principal and a student and wounding two others. He is sentenced to two 99-year terms. October 1, 1997: A 16 year-old boy in Pearl, Mississippi is accused of killing his mother, then going to Pearl High School, killing two students including his ex-girifriend and wounding seven others. -

It begins with a presentation of the theoretical concepts underpinning the analysis and subsequently identifies, through a detailed study, the following nine strategies: standard translation; literal translation; translation using markers; non-translation; translation into a third language; glosses; omissions; substitutions using intertextuality from the target culture; and substitutions using architextuality. Clare Domenico Olsen T/RS 25 May 2020 Spirited Away Anime has been an important part of many people’s culture. From shows like Pokemon and Naruto, to movies like Your Name and A Silent Voice. Personally, I do not watch a lot of anime in my time, but one of my favorite movies of all time is called Spirited Away, which is by the world famous director, Hayao Miyazaki, who owns the company Studio Ghibli. If i were to compare Miyazaki to somebody else, I would compare him to Walt Disney, since if you think about it, with his ratings and reviews, Miyazaki is basically the Walt Disney of Japan. His movies are filled with beautiful sceneries, music scores that will give you chills, and a story that will impact the viewer in every way, shape, and form. Every single one of the movies that this company brings out to the public is loved and cherished by many. Some, like the movie Totoro and Ponyo, are funny and light-hearted. Other movies by Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, like Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle, are more serious, and are better watched by an older audience so they can understand the main point and plot of the movie. One of my favorite movies by this company and director is called Spirited Away. Spirited Away was the first ever Studio Ghibli film I watched when I was a kid, and after watching it, I was hooked. The colors, sounds, and scenery were something at which I have never seen before in my life, and it drew me into the story and message it tries to obtain the viewer to have. -

Film remakes, the black sheep of translation Jonathan Evans* School of Languages and Area Studies, University of Portsmouth, UK *Email: [email protected] Film remakes have often been neglected by translation studies in favour of other forms of audio-visual translation such as subtitling and dubbing. Yet, as this article will argue, remakes are also a form of cinematic translation. Beginning with a survey of previous, ambivalent approaches to the status of remakes, it proposes that remakes are multimodal, adaptive translations: they translate the many modes of the film being remade and offer a reworking of that source text. The multimodal nature of remakes is explored through a reading of Breathless, Jim McBride’s 1983 remake of Jean-Luc Godard’s À bout de souffle (1959), which shows how remade films may repeat the narrative of, but differ on multiple levels from, their source films. Due to the collaborative nature of film production, remakes involve multiple agents of 2 translation. As such, remakes offer an expanded understanding of audiovisual translation. Money & Power in Goodfellas A Film Student ENG 225: Introduction to Film Professor Director Stardate 2259.55 Power 2 Money & Power in Goodfellas Martin Scorsese’s film Goodfellas (1990) is a gangster drama that shows the audience what it is like to be a part of the Mafia. This film is mainly told from the point of view of Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta, who knew as a child that he wanted to be a part of the crime family. This film shows Henry Hill’s “thirst for and rise to power,” which is its major theme (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, Ch. 4.2, para. 12). The movie Goodfellas shows the power that comes with money, the power of choice, and the power of persuasion, all of which are established through cinematography, acting, costuming, and design. With money comes power. This is shown in “The Long Take” scene in which Henry Hill and his date are walking into the Copacabana nightclub. Scorcese uses a continuous tracking shot to show Henry gladhanding the nightclub staff the resulting respect he is given, not only by the staff of the nightclub, but the other patrons inside. This cinematographic technique portrays Henry Hill as a man of importance. The camera stays low, making him look tall, and stays with him through the back entrance, a hallway, the kitchen, and into the dining room where he is given his own table in front of everyone else. -
