  • St Chavara and the Mystic St Euphrasia
Vol. 11, 2 (2015) Pages: 237-254 ST CHAVARA AND THE MYSTIC ST EUPHRASIA Thomas Kadankavil CMI Abstract: The author gives an overview of the lives of the twin Carmelite saints Chavara and Euphrasia and their mysticism. After a short life sketch of Euphrasia in the backdrop of the church in shambles, the author moves on to sketch the life of Euphrasia in the convent. She is presented both as a devotee and a disciple of Chavara. Although he did not directly give any instruction for the spiritual formation of Euphrasia, yet, she was transformed in the school of Chavara, in which she rose to the heights of mystical experiences including diabolic experiences and intense temptations. The author then slides into the story of Chavara and his relationship with Leopold, the influence St Teresa of Avila had on Chavara. The many mystical experiences of Euphrasia had its roots in Chavara who was influenced by Teresa of Avila. The author claims that contemplation was a common goal of both the saints. However, as both of them followed two different lifestyles, so they are seen as models of two Carmelite spiritual streams – contemplation and action and contemplation and silence. While Chavara is a paradigm of the stream of contemplation and action, Euphrasia naturally is a representative of those who follow the path of contemplation and silence. Keywords: Carmelites, Church, Kerala, society, Bishops, vicariates, history, disciple, devotee, mysticism, prayer, contemplation, temptation, diabolic, convent, bride. 1. Historical Background Child Rose (later Sr Euphrasia CMC) was born on 17 October 1877 seven years after the death of Chavara (3 January 1871) at Kattoor, a village in the Vicariate of Varapuzha as the eldest daughter of Eluvathingal Anthony-Kunjetty of a financially well to do Syrian Christian family.

  • Diocesan Bulletin
Diocesan Bulletin - January, 2015 Mar Jacob Angadiath with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Canonization of Saint Chavara Kuriakose & Saint Euphrasia The faith confession of St. Thomas the Apostle, “My Lord and My God”, stands in the history as the most profound confession on Jesus’ true identity. ‘Lord’ and ‘God’ are the equivalent words for the Greek terms ‘Kyrios’ and ‘Theos’ respectively used to denote the Hebrew words ‘Yahweh’ and ‘Elohim’, two expressions used to address the Almighty One. Making use of these words to the Resurrected Lord, Thomas equates Jesus to the Absolute Deity. He connects the Old Testament and New Testament understanding of God. St. Thomas Syro-Malabar St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, by Catholic Diocese of Chicago living and experiencing the faith confession of her patron through the celebration of her liturgy, aims at the deepening of the identity and heritage of Syro-Malabar Church in the United States of America. • The Holy See
The Holy See LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO THE BISHOPS OF INDIA Dear Brother Bishops, 1. The remarkable varietas Ecclesiarum, the result of a long historical, cultural, spiritual and disciplinary development, constitutes a treasure of the Church, regina in vestitu deaurato circumdata varietate (cf. Ps 44 and Leo XIII, Orientalium Dignitas), who awaits her groom with the fidelity and patience of the wise virgin, equipped with an abundant supply of oil, so that the light of her lamp may enlighten all peoples in the long night of awaiting the Lord’s coming. This variety of ecclesial life, which shines with great splendour throughout lands and nations, is also found in India. The Catholic Church in India has its origins in the preaching of the Apostle Thomas. It developed through contact with the Churches of Chaldean and Antiochian traditions and through the efforts of Latin missionaries. The history of Christianity in this great country thus led to three distinct sui iuris Churches, corresponding to ecclesial expressions of the same faith celebrated in different rites according to the three liturgical, spiritual, theological and disciplinary traditions. Although this situation has sometimes led to tensions in the course of history, today we can admire a Christian presence that is both rich and beautiful, complex and unique. 2. It is essential for the Catholic Church to reveal her face in all its beauty to the world, in the richness of her various traditions. For this reason the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, which celebrates its centenary year, having been established through the farsightedness of Pope Benedict XV in 1917, has encouraged, where necessary, the restoration of Eastern Catholic traditions, and ensured their protection, as well as respect for the dignity and rights of these ancient Churches.

  • The Religious Lifeworlds of Canada's Goan and Anglo-Indian Communities
Brown Baby Jesus: The Religious Lifeworlds of Canada’s Goan and Anglo-Indian Communities Kathryn Carrière Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the PhD degree in Religion and Classics Religion and Classics Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Kathryn Carrière, Ottawa, Canada, 2011 I dedicate this thesis to my husband Reg and our son Gabriel who, of all souls on this Earth, are most dear to me. And, thank you to my Mum and Dad, for teaching me that faith and love come first and foremost. Abstract Employing the concepts of lifeworld (Lebenswelt) and system as primarily discussed by Edmund Husserl and Jürgen Habermas, this dissertation argues that the lifeworlds of Anglo- Indian and Goan Catholics in the Greater Toronto Area have permitted members of these communities to relatively easily understand, interact with and manoeuvre through Canada’s democratic, individualistic and market-driven system. Suggesting that the Catholic faith serves as a multi-dimensional primary lens for Canadian Goan and Anglo-Indians, this sociological ethnography explores how religion has and continues affect their identity as diasporic post- colonial communities. Modifying key elements of traditional Indian culture to reflect their Catholic beliefs, these migrants consider their faith to be the very backdrop upon which their life experiences render meaningful. Through systematic qualitative case studies, I uncover how these individuals have successfully maintained a sense of security and ethnic pride amidst the myriad cultures and religions found in Canada’s multicultural society. Oscillating between the fuzzy boundaries of the Indian traditional and North American liberal worlds, Anglo-Indians and Goans attribute their achievements to their open-minded Westernized upbringing, their traditional Indian roots and their Catholic-centred principles effectively making them, in their opinions, admirable models of accommodation to Canada’s system.

1 FAITH CONFESSION OF ST. THOMAS THE APOSTLE St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago The faith confession of St. Thomas the Apostle, “My Lord and My God”, stands in history as the most profound confession on Jesus’ true identity. He connects the Old Testament and New Testament St. Thomas Syro-Malabar understanding of God in the person of Jesus Christ. Catholic Diocese of Chicago St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, by living My Lord and My God and experiencing the faith confession of her patron through the celebration of her liturgy, aims at the deepening of the identity and heritage of Syro- Malabar Church in the United States of America. While the recapture of the Nineveh plains, Mosul and other areas removed the extremist ‘Islamic State’ from the region, it has come at a great and tragic cost in lives, destruction of property and infrastructure, and brings new challenges for restoration of the affected communities and for promoting social and religious cohesion in Iraq, the executive committee stated.
