Questionnaires were sent toover four thousand women's studies teachers throughout the United States, andnotices were placed in several feminist publicationsrequesting information on per- tinent research. Standard periodical indexes and abstracts dated 1973 or 1974 were combed for citationson women. Hence, some material from 1971 and 1972 if itwas cited in the 1973-1974 index, may be incZuded. Finely, many listings were garnered by systematically going through the BirdieGoldsmith Ast Resource Collection of the Barnard Women's Center. See the Appendix for a complete list of sources. Designing useful subject categorieswas a major consideration in putting together the bibliography. Research about women often de- fies traditional categorization by discipline. The categories chosen derive, as much as possible, from thethrust of the materiaZ itself, rather than from predeterminedsubject headings. You wiZZ note, however, that there areno cross-references. We urge you to consult a variety of categories forany given inquiry. Writings on women have mushroomed in thepast few years. In an effort to include only that material which couldbe covered compre- hensively, the bibliography no Longer containswork published out- side the United States, technical research,or poetry and fiction by women. Listings of activist groups and feministperiodicals have also been omitted as they arenow readiZy available elsewhere.* As with earlier editions of WOMEN'S WORK ANDWOMEN'S STUDIEW, articles from newspapers and popular magazinas by andLarge have not been included. We would like to thank aZZ thewomen who contributed time, energy, and ideas to this volume of the bibliography. Our.special thanks go to Pat Ballou and Sandra M. Whicler foy their valuableadvice and to the many librarians who generously participatedin com- piling this bibliography.** 6 The publication of this volume wasmade possible by a bequeit from the Estate ofHelen Rogers Reid, a distinguishedBarnard graduate of the Class of 1903.
