Summary This study reviews the current state of development of new Trackless Tram Systems (TTS) and finds that the technology is ready and reliable enough for implementations all around the world. The study focuses on the last version of TTS developed by CCRC Locomotive and nicknamed TRAMeBUS all throughout the study. As there is currently a public transport problem in a central avenue (Av. Diagonal) in the city of Barcelona the project analyses if this could be solved taking advantage of the TRAMeBUS vehicle. Currently the central section of the Avenue acts as a wall and prevents the two Barcelona’s Tramway networks from joining and providing a better service to citizens. A revision of the already studied alternatives for the Diagonal Avenue delivers two scenarios to consider.

    Zaragoza is at about 320 km from Madrid and 290 km from Barcelona.     Spatial analysis of the competitiveness of the high-speed train and air transport: The role of access to terminals in the Madrid–Barcelona corridor Juan Carlos Martín, Concepción Román, Juan Carlos García-Palomares, Javier Gutiérrez This paper analyzes the effect of access and egress time to transport terminals over the spa- tial competiveness of the high-speed train (HST) in the Madrid–Barcelona (Spain) corridor, one of the densest airline domestic markets in the world. Applying spatial data from 2010 provided by a geographical information system (GIS) to a mode choice model estimated with sample travelers in this corridor, the present study examines whether and how the level-of-service of transport terminals spatially affects the competitiveness or modal distri- bution of HST and air transport in the provinces of Madrid and Barcelona; and, in particu- lar, the degree of competitiveness that can be accrued by the access time provided by private car and transit in different market segments, especially mandatory and leisure trips. In a number of urban zones near train stations and airports, terminal accessibility clearly favors one transport mode in comparison to the other. Improving terminal accessi- bility via private car or public transit not only affects the relative access to terminals, but also represents a key strategy for readjusting the market shares of the competing modes in the corridor. 1. The sector Land transport encompasses long-distance, urban and international carriage of goods and people by rail and road. Main areas of activity The land transport sector includes rail and road transport of people and road and rail freight. Trends In terms of the movement of people, public transport will be boosted mainly due to technological and infrastructure improvements that are being introduced combined with its critical role in sustainable mobility. As for freight, globalisation of trade and the implementation of efficient inventory management systems are crucial to the evolution of the sector in the near future. Economic importance The land transport sector, according to the Annual Survey of Services INE, had in 2010 a turnover of €45.593 million, representing 11,3% of the turnover of the whole services sector in Spain. In Catalonia, the land transport sector has a considerable economic weight, and it is one of its the most important productive sectors; in fact, business volume is €9.954 million, representing 21,8 % of the turnover of the sector in Spain and 43,8% of the turnover of the transport industry (land, maritime, air, postal activities and storage) in Catalonia.
