An annotated list of Italian Renaissance humanists, their writings about Jews, and involvement in Hebrew studies, ca. 1440-ca.1540 This list, arranged in chronological order by author’s date of birth, where known, is a preliminary guide to Italian humanists’ Latin and vernacular prose and poetic accounts of Jews and Judaic culture and history from about 1440 to 1540. In each case, I have sought to provide the author’s name and birth and death dates, a brief biography highlighting details which especially pertain to his interest in Jews, a summary of discussions about Jews, a list of relevant works and dates of composition, locations of manuscripts, and a list of secondary sources or studies of the author and his context arranged alphabetically by author’s name. Manuscripts are listed in alphabetical order by city of current location; imprints, as far as possible, by ascending date. Bishop of Gerace in Calabria from 1348 until 1366, and Latin archbishop of Thebes until 1380. During his time in Thebes, which was the capital of the Catalan duchy of Athens, he studied Hebrew and in the mid- to late-1370s he began work on a polyglot Latin-Greek-Hebrew Bible dedicated to Pope Urban VI. -

Program notes for Camerata Milwaukee for Dec 2, 2018 Our Advent-tide program this year includes several solo vocal cantatas, works by two Ursuline nuns, three Italian Christmas concertos, and various other baroque delights. Giuseppe Torelli is primarily known as a member of the Bolognese school of violinists and composers. He helped shape the genres of concerto and sonata into their mature forms under a variety of names, such as tonight’s “sinfonias”, which were published in 1692 as part of his Opus 5. Rather than the larger works which later came to be associated with this term, these two pieces are examples of trio sonatas scored for two violinists and basso continuo (a harpsichordist or organist who fills in the chordal structure plus a cellist reinforcing the bass line). The Italian nun Isabella Leonarda entered the Collegio di Sant'Orsola—an Ursuline convent in her hometown of Novara in northern Italy near Milan— at the age of sixteen. -

PERONI, Giuseppe by Anna Chiara Fontana - Italian Biography Dictionary - Volume 82 (2015) PERONI, Joseph. - He was born in Parma in the parish of St. Bartholomew on May 6, 1710 by Luigi, physician, and Maria Maddalena Remesini (or Ramesini), originally from Colorno. At the age of fourteen, following the footsteps of his elder brother Giulio (1705-1784), parish priest of the same church of S. Bartolomeo and founder of the conservatory of the Vincenzine di Parma (Janelli, 1877, p. 506), he began his ecclesiastical career , receiving the first tonsure on April 10, 1724 (Paini, 1987, p. 242). His outstanding artistic qualities, since childhood, pushed his father to send him to the school of Pier Ilario Mercanti, known as Spolverini, a famous painter of battles and portraitist, and later to Giovanni Bolla, from whom he learned the technique of 'fresco. On the advice of Spolverini he left his hometown to move to Bologna (1731). In the upper town he attended the Clementine Academy, receiving architectural and perspective outlines from Ferdinando Galli Bibiena (Paini, 1987, p. 242) and following the teachings of the anatomist Ercole Lelli, Felice Torelli and Donato Creti, they competed to train him "(Scarabelli Zunti, late 19th century, c. 235r). During the progress of the present work, it has been observed that the fame of the art, in common with that of letters and of arms, has been transferred from place to place; and that wherever it fixed its seat, its influence tended to the perfection of some branch of painting, which by preceding artists had been less studied, or less understood. Towards the close of the sixteenth century, indeed, there seemed not to be left in nature, any kind of beauty, in its outward forms or aspect, that had not been admired and represented by some great master; insomuch that the artist, however ambitious, was compelled, as an imitator of nature, to become, likewise, an imitator of the best masters; while the discovery of new styles depended upon a more or less skilful combination of the old. Thus the sole career that remained open for the display of human genius was that of imitation; as it appeared impossible to design figures more masterly than those of Bonarruoti or Da Vinci, to express them with more grace than Raffaello, with more animated colours than those of Titian, with more lively motions than those of Tintoretto, or to give them a richer drapery and ornaments than Paul Veronese; to present them to the eye at every degree of distance, and in perspective, with more art, more fulness, and more enchanting power than fell to the genius of Coreggio. Accordingly the path of imitation was at that time pursued by every school, though with very little method. -

He was canonized in 1767 and is the patron saint of orphans. Biography Jerome was born in Venice, the son of Angelo Emiliani (popularly called Miani) and Eleonore Mauroceni. His father died when he was a teenager and ran away at the age of 15 to join the army. In 1508, he participated in the defense of Castelnuovo against the League of Cambray. He was appointed governor of a fortress in the mountains of Treviso, and while defending his post taken was made prisoner. His escape he attributed to the intercession of the Mother of God; and he made a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Treviso, in fulfillment of a vow, and left his chains as an offering.[1] He was then appointed podestà (Venetian magistrate) of Castelnuovo, but after a short time returned to Venice to supervise the education of his nephews. All his spare time was devoted to the study of theology and to works of charity. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1518. In the year of plague and famine (1528), he seemed to be everywhere and showed his zeal, especially for the orphans, whose number had so greatly increased.
