FOWLER CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, PASADENA They [atoms] move in the void and catching each other up jostle together, and some recoil in any direction that may chance, and others become entangled with one another in various degrees according to the symmetry of their shapes and sizes and positions and order, and they remain together and thus the coming into being of composite things is effected. -SIMPLICIUS (6th Century A.D.) It is my privilege to begin our consideration of the history of the universe during this first scientific session of the Academy Centennial with a discussion of the origin of the elements of which the matter of the universe is constituted. The question of the origin of the elements and their numerous isotopes is the modern expression of one of the most ancient problems in science. The early Greeks thought that all matter consisted of the four simple substances-air, earth, fire, and water-and they, too, sought to know the ultimate origin of what for them were the elementary forms of matter. They also speculated that matter consists of very small, indivisible, indestructible, and uncreatable atoms. They were wrong in detail but their concepts of atoms and elements and their quest for origins persist in our science today. When our Academy was founded one century ago, the chemist had shown that the elements were immutable under all chemical and physical transformations known at the time. The alchemist was self-deluded or was an out-and-out charla- tan. Matter was atomic, and absolute immutability characterized each atomic species. -

Yeung According to the Nestorian Stele inscriptions, in the ninth year of the Zhen- guan era of the Tang Dynasty (635 AD), the Nestorian monk Mar Alopen, carry- ing with him 530 sacred texts1 and accompanied by 21 priests from Persia, arrived at Chang’an after years of traveling along the ancient Silk Road.2 The Emperor’s chancellor, Duke3 Fang Xuanling, along with the court guard, wel- comed the guests from Persia on the western outskirts of Chang’an and led them to Emperor Taizong of Tang, whose full name was Li Shimin. Here we investigate the possibility that the guest star that appeared near Cas A in 1592{1593 in Korean history books could have been an `impostor' of the Cas A SN, i.e., a luminous transient that appeared to be a SN but did not destroy the progenitor star, with strong mass loss to have provided extra circumstellar extinction. We first review the Korean records and show that a spatial coincidence between the guest star and Cas A cannot be ruled out, as opposed to previous studies. Based on modern astrophysical findings on core-collapse SN, we argue that Cas A could have had an impostor and derive its anticipated properties. It turned out that the Cas A SN impostor must have been bright (MV = −14:7 ± 2:2 mag) and an amount of dust with visual extinction of ≥ 2:8 ± 2:2 mag should have formed in the ejected envelope and/or in a strong wind afterwards. -

There are a few ancient Chinese records of \guest stars" that are probably sightings of supernovae for which the associated supernova remnant is not established. Here we present an X-ray study of the supernova remnant G7.7−3:7, as observed by XMM-Newton, and discuss its probable association with the guest star of 386 CE. This guest star occurred in the ancient Chinese asterism Nan-Dou, which is part of Sagittarius. The X-ray morphology of G7.7−3:7 shows an arc-like feature in the SNR south, which is characterized by an under-ionized plasma with sub-solar abundances, a temperature of 0:4{0.8 keV, and a density of ∼ 0:5(d=4 kpc)−0:5 cm−3. -

562 Book Reviews / T’oung Pao 99 (2013) 539-584 Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. Edited by Peter Lorge. Hong Kong: Chinese Univ. Press, 2011. ix + 252 p. Contributions by Hugh R. Clark, Johannes L. Kurz, De-nin Lee, Peter Lorge, Tracy Miller, Ruth Mostern, Naomi Standen. This book is an excellent collection of thought-provoking essays. It successfully presents the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (906-960) as highly sig- nificant to Chinese history, and also demonstrates the benefits of a pluralistic perspective in analyzing this period. Moreover, this volume raises methodological questions that are broadly relevant to historians in other fields. Peter Lorge’s introduction concisely explains how the collection was conceived, and lays out the broader historical and historiographical background of the case studies in this volume. Without claiming to do a complete reassessment of the traditional historiography on the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Lorge points out certain of its weaknesses. With its emphasis on periodization and the “legiti- mate succession” (p. 3) of dynasties, it tends to favor a linear view of history, which is inadequate to explain the diversity in this period of division. Moreover, the focus on periodization tends to create a “cognitive dissonance” (p. 2) in tra- ditional historians. Ouyang Xiu’s 歐陽修 “Historical Records of the Five Dynas- ties” (Wudai shiji 五代史記), for example, seems to have been written teleologically to explain the subsequent rise of the Song rather than to analyze the Five Dynas- ties period on its own terms (p. 1). An important goal of this volume of essays, then, is to promote a historical perspective that is centered on the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period itself. -
Variable Star
Variable star A variable star is a star whose brightness as seen from Earth (its apparent magnitude) fluctuates. This variation may be caused by a change in emitted light or by something partly blocking the light, so variable stars are classified as either: Intrinsic variables, whose luminosity actually changes; for example, because the star periodically swells and shrinks. Extrinsic variables, whose apparent changes in brightness are due to changes in the amount of their light that can reach Earth; for example, because the star has an orbiting companion that sometimes Trifid Nebula contains Cepheid variable stars eclipses it. This discovery, combined with supernovae observed in 1572 and 1604, proved that the starry sky was not eternally invariable as Aristotle and other ancient philosophers had taught. -

By comparing the inscription with representations of the deceased in offi cial sources, the article reveals that the tomb inscription presents a critical attitude toward the moral standards of conventional historiography, and demonstrates a shifting moral geography in the works of Song historians. Th is new standard increasingly excluded nomadic peoples from the newly imagined political body, and excluded with them the pragmatic diplomacy that had characterized the politics of the Five Dynasties. Cet article analyse l’inscription funéraire de Wang Chuzhi (863-923). Ce gouverneur mili- taire vécut à la fi n des Tang et au début de la période des Cinq Dynasties. La comparaison de l’inscription à diverses représentations du défunt contenues dans les sources offi cielles montre la manière dont l’auteur de l’inscription critique les standards moraux de l’historiographie offi cielle.
