    Padre Carlos Mugica, semblanza de un cura como pocos Por Horacio Ríos El mártir que vive en el alma del pueblo El padre Carlos Mugica fue un paradigma de su tiempo, a la vez que una contradicción en sí mismo. Hijo de una familia de clase alta, ofrendó su vida por los más humildes, incluso conociendo de antemano que ésa era una posibilidad demasiado cercana. Para servirles, renunció a una prometedora carrera en el seno de la iglesia, que podría haberlo llevado a las más altas jerarquías, ya que era un hombre de brillante inteligencia. Pero eso no era todo: era un cura peronista que trabajaba en el Barrio Comunicaciones, hoy Villa 31. Vivió sin miedo y sin pedir nada para sí mismo. Lo asesinó un matón a sueldo, en el que algunos creyeron reconocer al comisario de la Policía Federal Rodolfo Almirón. Después de 30 años, para desmentir a sus asesinos, Mugica sigue siendo recordado como lo que fue: un cura como los que prefería otro mártir de aquellos tiempos, el "Chacho" Angelelli: "con una oreja en el Evangelio y la otra en el pueblo" El que luego sería el padre Carlos Mugica nació en Buenos Aires el 7 de octubre de 1930, en el seno de una familia de clase alta. Su padre, Adolfo Mugica, fue diputado conservador entre 1938 y 1942 y posteriormente, en 1961, ministro de Relaciones Exteriores, durante la presidencia de Arturo Frondizi. Por otra parte su madre, Carmen Echagüe, pertenecía a una familia de ricos estancieros bonaerenses. It proposes a study of filmic representations of these metropolises during a period of significant political, economic, social, and cultural transformations following an era of dictatorship. In particular, this project explores the degree to which these films offer a contestatory vision of this transformation. The socio- economic charges ushered in by the neoliberal platform both in Brazil and Argentina have intensified many social and infra-structural changes: on the one hand, we see unparalleled growth of the number of favelas and villas miseria while on the other hand there exists the renovation and revitalization of affluent areas seen in the construction of an unequaled number of postmodernist-style buildings. At the same time, unprecedented violence surges in urban areas such as São Paulo and Buenos Aires as a consequence of these political-economic measures. The films analyzed here through transdissciplinary lens evidence social gaps based on class division.

    Mapping the Argentine New Left: Social Liberation, National Liberation and Revolutionary Violence, 1969–1977 Latin American Perspectives (forthcoming) David Copello, Casa de Velázquez Calle de Paul Guinard, 3 – 28040 Madrid [email protected] Mapping the Argentine New Left: Social Liberation, National Liberation and Revolutionary Violence, 1969–1977 Abstract In recent years, investigation on 1960s/1970s revolutionary activism in Argentina has led to the publication of multiple case studies. Building on this existing literature, the article provides a more general view of what is often called the “New Left”, which is first characterized by the importance assigned to three issues: social liberation, national liberation and revolutionary violence. The paper then isolates two differentiating lines within this political space: an ideological divide (Marxism vs. Peronism) and an instrumental division over the strategic status of violence (insurrection vs. protracted people’s war vs. political- military action). In the conclusion, we provide a summarized graphic representation to facilitate comparative reflections on radical politics in the long sixties. This overview shall help non-specialists familiarize with a complex historical reality that has become key to contemporary political debates on memory and human rights in Argentina. Keywords: New Left; Argentina; Revolutionary Peronism; Revolutionary Left; Guerrilla. 1 Introduction In the 1960s and 1970s, Argentina experienced an unprecedented wave of political unrest (Anzorena, 1998, De Riz, 2000, Novaro & Palermo, 2003, Franco, 2012). After the urban insurrection of Córdoba in 1969 (often nicknamed Cordobazo), a series of armed revolutionary organizations emerged in the public space. They deeply affected Argentine politics, up until 1977 when they were physically annihilated by a civil-military dictatorship established a year earlier (Gillespie, 1982, Carnovale, 2011).

Así, con anterioridad a 1976, Argentina sufrió una verdadera oleada de atentados y violencia de ideología marxista protagonizada por ERP-Montoneros contra la sociedad civil conservadora. A través de fuentes primarias, como los periódicos Clarín, La Nación, La Prensa, Revista Periscopio, Revista El Descamisado, Revista La Causa Peronista, Revista Cristianismo y Revolución, Militancia peronista para la liberación, además de comunicados originales, se estudian los elementos estructurales del grupo Montoneros, su forma de actuación y su metodología de actividad violenta. También se analiza su praxis ideológica en la antesala del golpe de Estado de 1976. ABSTRACT In this article there is an analyze of one of the most complicated aspects of the history of Argentina, that is, the reason of the origin of the political violence, from a Marxist origin, in this case of the terrorist group Montoneros. In this way, before 1976, Argentina suffered a real terrorist and violence wave with a Marxist ideology, done by ERP-Montoneros against the conservative civil society. In this article - and thanks to primary sources, such as the newspapers Clarín, La Nación and La prensa, the magazine Periscopio , the magazines El Descamisado, La Causa Peronista, Cristianismo y Revolución and Militancia Peronista para la Liberación , in addition to original communiqués - there is a deep study of the structural elements of the Montoneros group, its way of acting and it violent activity methodology.

Esta cultura política se caracterizó por la combinación de elementos pro- venientes de cultura nacionalista y de otros de origen peronista, siendo sus principales rasgos el énfasis en el nacionalismo, en el revisionismo histórico -con especial hincapié en la figura de Rosas-, un marcado antisemitismo y anticomunismo y cierta preferencia por la acción di- recta y violenta en su enfrentamiento con la izquierda.
