Scheuren Acevedo Florida International University, 2016 Miami, Florida Professor Ana María Bidegain, Major Professor This thesis aims to explore the political, social and religious opposition to Liberation Theology in Latin America during the 1960s to 1990s, and the transformation of Christianity. During this period, most Latin American countries underwent social struggles and political repression in which opposition and persecution arose from dictatorial and military governments who labeled those committed to the poor as communists. Liberation Theology emerged as an ecclesial and theological trend committed to the poor, in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s in Latin America. This thesis traces the origins, development, expansion and repression of Liberation Theology. This work maintains that under the Cold War context and the National Security Doctrine, Liberation Theology became a target of political repression because its commitment with the poor placed it as subversive and communist. Despite the strong opposition to liberation theology from the Vatican and conservative church officials, Romero’s life and legacy has helped keep the core ideas of the theology alive by serving as an example of a more peaceful version of liberationist thought. Because of his "martyrdom" and his subsequent iconic status throughout Latin America, the church could not simply dismiss his ideas.

(For that retreat, almost fifty priests from all over the United States had gathered for a week within the Month of Nazareth, in which a smaller number of priests were participating for the full month.) This mini-history is to complement A New Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Msgr. Bryan Karvelis of Brooklyn, New York (RIP), and the American Experience of Jesus Caritas Fraternities by Father Dan Danielson of Oakland, California. It proposes to record the beginnings of the Jesus Caritas Fraternities in the USA over its first decade of existence from 1963 to 1973, and it will mark the fifth anniversary of the beatification of the one who inspired them, Little Brother Blessed Charles de Foucault. It purports to be an “acts of the apostles” of some of the Jesus Caritas Fraternity prophets and apostles in the USA, a collective living memory of this little- known dynamic dimension of the Church in the United States. It is not an evaluation of the Fraternity, much less a road map for its future growth and development.

    BY FRANK SMYTH AN SALVADOR-Several months ago a friend in­ vi ted me to his sociology class. "Come on," he said, "we're going to see a movie." Beaches, starringBette Midler, was the day's discussion subject. Students milled about the audito­ rium, many in Levis and Reeboks. With a Coke and popcorn in hand, I felt as close to home as a foreigner can feel in El Salvador. EntreAmigos-"Among Friends"­ is how the movie title was translated into Spanish. Readers may be famil­ iar with the plot: two young girls meet by chance in California and build a friendship that stretches to lew York and lasts for life. When the lights came on, a tall man with a long greying beard took his place at the front of the class. He spoke in a deep raspy voice. "What does it mean to be friends?" he asked paternally. "What does it mean to have a friendship?" But the discussion soon took its own track. "What is the meaning of friendship," asked one woman, "in the midst ofwar?" A Salvadoran soldier interrogates a suspected guerilla during the November fighting in San Salvador. BOSTON COLLEGE MAGAZINE 21 But I made the trip alone.
