' somewhat against his best judgment, the writer oepted the presidency of the Louisiana Society, Sons of the Amerioan Revolution, in the apring of 1916. Hie idea was to carry it over until we could get someone to take up the work and build up the Society. In the meanwhile, the writer became very much in- terested in the work, and with assistance of a more or less indifferent nature from one or two men.bers, laid out a pro- gram which was the ground work of the present large and pros- perous Louisiana Society. At the outset, after dropping ail those who were not eeemingly interested in the work, there remained about forty five members. Sinoe that time, there has been taken into the Louisiana Society a total of five hundred and three members. Of this five hundred and three, three hundred and forty three beoame members during the writerie incumbency. It might be noted also that from January, 1911, until June, 1917, no one had been taken in. Ail S.A.R. organizations throughout the U.S.A. now know that the Louisiana Society is "on the map," ‘It was not long after the compiler got intô this work before he saw that there wae a great untouched field for membership from among the descendants of the soldiers who eerved under Galvez in campaigns against the British in 1779, 1780, and 1781. The question thon arose as to what had beoome of the rosters of the Galvez organizations - as a motter of faut, if the rosterp still actually existed, was it possible to get copies of them. Inquiriee at the Louisiana Historical So7lety and the- Libraries of this City and elsewhere developed nothing, and for a while the job was considered hopeles Later, quit a bit of information are encourage- ment along those linos was obtained through the kindness and o.ourtesy of Mr. William Beer of the Howard Library. Also a bit of information was obtained from lire. Heloise H. Cruzat‘. who was thon delving in the Archives of the Cabildo. But thia was but a more "drop in the bucket" as oompared to what later developed. A number of lettere were written to various par- ties in Spain with the hope of getting a line on the situa- tion there, but likewise nothing wae developed. It looked as if everybody was ignorant of what the writer wanted.
