New Contree, A journal of Historical and Human Sciences for Southern Africa, is mainly published in English though all the officially accepted languages in South Africa are accommodated in all editions. Abstracts in English only are required. New Contree is multidisciplinary focused and administrated within the Historical and Human Sciences by the School of Basic Sciences, Vaal Triangle Campus, North-West University. To accommodate more articles from a wide variety of Historical and Human Sciences disciplines (that especially reflect a solid fundamental historical approach), this Journal has slightly altered its name from 2008. Sudré Havenga and Andre Wessels slightly change the “group” focus when exchanging information on the money history of the former Republic of the Free State since the mid ninety century up to 1902. That the Free State never had their own coinage but at least since 1865 the well-known “blue backs” paper money (on blue paper) shimmers a very valuable part of daily economic life and culture that contribute to an understanding of the economic trading practises of the time. Eight book reviews are included, of which three covers personalities in different research and writing genres, namely Paul Kruger’s speeches; an autobiography of Hermann Giliomee and Harold Wolpe’ critical views of apartheid. Then four reviews informs on issues or/and phenomena of states, regions and places. They are TV Bulpin’s aged, but valued work on the golden Republic; Karel Schoeman’s contribution on the Dutch East Indian Company’s last years of administration in the Cape; Michael Bratton’s Zimbabwe and violent power politics and lastly a history of West Africa before the colonial era by Basil Davidson. The Zulu kingdom of the Shaka era by Elizabeth Eldredge, in which the role of women is accentuated more, is a valuable and welcomed refreshed view on Shaka and the Zulu kingdom. It had been collected by student Chumani Maxwele from “one of the portable toilets that dot the often turbulent, crowded townships on the windswept plains outside Cape Town.”2 Maxwele’s actions sparked a campus-wide conversation that spread to other campuses in South Africa. • A Comparative Study of Zimbabwe and South Africa
FACEBOOK, YOUTH AND POLITICAL ACTION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ZIMBABWE AND SOUTH AFRICA A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES, RHODES UNIVERSITY by Admire Mare September 2015 ABSTRACT This comparative multi-sited study examines how, why and when politically engaged youths in distinctive national and social movement contexts use Facebook to facilitate political activism. As part of the research objectives, this study is concerned with investigating how and why youth activists in Zimbabwe and South Africa use the popular corporate social network site for political purposes. The study explores the discursive interactions and micro- politics of participation which plays out on selected Facebook groups and pages. It also examines the extent to which the selected Facebook pages and groups can be considered as alternative spaces for political activism. It also documents and analyses the various kinds of political discourses (described here as digital hidden transcripts) which are circulated by Zimbabwean and South African youth activists on Facebook fan pages and groups. Methodologically, this study adopts a predominantly qualitative research design although it also draws on quantitative data in terms of levels of interaction on Facebook groups and pages. Consequently, this study engages in data triangulation which allows me to make sense of how and why politically engaged youths from a range of six social movements in Zimbabwe and South Africa use Facebook for political action. In terms of data collection techniques, the study deploys social media ethnography (online participant observation), qualitative content analysis and in-depth interviews.

  • Rhodesmustfall: Using Social Media to “Decolonise” Learning Spaces for South African Higher Education Institutions: a Cultural Historical Activity Theory Approach
#RHODESMUSTFALL: USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO “DECOLONISE” LEARNING SPACES FOR SOUTH AFRICAN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: A CULTURAL HISTORICAL ACTIVITY THEORY APPROACH S. Francis* e-mail: [email protected] J. Hardman* e-mail: [email protected] *School of Education University of Cape Town Cape Town, South Africa ABSTRACT Since the end of 2015, South African universities have been the stage of ongoing student protests that seek to shift the status quo of Higher Education Institutes through calls to decolonise the curriculum and enable free access to HEIs for all. One tool that students have increasingly turned to, to voice their opinions has been social media. In this article we argue that one can use Cultural Historical Activity Theory to understand how the activity systems of the traditional academy are shifting the wake of social media, with traditional power relations becoming more porous as students’ voices gain an audience. By tracing the historical development of CHAT, we show how 4th generation CHAT enables us to analyse potential power shifts in HEIs brought about through the use of social media. Keywords: decolonising the curriculum Higher Education, cultural historical activity theory INTRODUCTION 2015 was rife with controversy in South Africa, but it was an exciting time as important conversations around access to higher education, the inclusivity of South African universities and decolonisation became part of public conversation (Kamanzi 2015; Hlophe 2015; Masondo 2015). This movement became known under the hashtag of #Rhodesmustfall, indicating the need to decolonise academic spaces felt by those in the movement. In subsequent years this movement has transformed into #feesmustfall, indicating the students’ driving motive to gain access to institutes of higher learning.

The 1948 crisis in ties between the Netherlands and Afrikaner nationalists, New Contree, 78, July 2017, pp. 58-74 Cousins no more? The 1948 crisis in ties between the Netherlands and Afrikaner nationalists Patrick Furlong Alma College, USA [email protected] Abstract Despite historic Dutch-Afrikaner links, the Netherlands became a leading critic of South Africa’s National Party (NP) government. Many scholars agree that while differences on involvement in World War II hurt ties, the NP’s apartheid policy caused a major rift only much later. This study examines the roots of that rift in Dutch responses to the 1948 NP victory, the ensuing controversy, and that over appointing Otto du Plessis as envoy to The Hague. Afrikaner nationalists were as baffled by their cousins’ not understanding their wartime refusal to aid the Allies as most Dutch were by many Afrikaners’ wartime actions, discounting such criticism as misinformed and not understanding how much Nazi racial ideology made their apartheid platform toxic. Such different recent histories had made them strangers to each other so that, despite efforts to paper over strained relations, the eventual rupture was significantly shaped by the earlier crisis. Keywords: Afrikaner nationalism; Netherlands; Second World War; Apartheid; National Party; Daniel Malan; Pierneef; Otto du Plessis. Introduction The Netherlands was a fierce critic of the Afrikaner-led National Party (NP) government’s apartheid policy.1 Its government supported the Defence and Aid Fund, which helped African political detainees and their families,2 in 1977 suspended and in 1981 ended a 1951 cultural accord,3 and barred president FW de Klerk’s entry even after he unbanned the liberation movements.4 Yet, Afrikaner ties of ancestry, religion, and language to the Dutch stamland 1 HO Terblanche, “Nederland en Suid-Afrika: Herontdekking van stamverwantschap”, Journal for Contemporary History, 20(2), 1995, pp.

http://www.politicsweb.co.za/documents/going-off-the-rails--irr Going off the rails - IRR John Kane-Berman - IRR | 02 November 2016 John Kane-Berman on the slide towards the lawless South African state GOING OFF THE RAILS: THE SLIDE TOWARDS THE LAWLESS SOUTH AFRICAN STATE SETTING THE SCENE South Africa is widely recognised as a lawless country. It is also a country run by a government which has itself become increasingly lawless. This is so despite all the commitments to legality set out in the Constitution. Not only is the post–apartheid South Africa founded upon the principle of legality, but courts whose independence is guaranteed are vested with the power to ensure that these principles are upheld. Prosecuting authorities are enjoined to exercise their functions “without fear, favour, or prejudice”. The same duty is laid upon other institutions established by the Constitution, among them the public protector and the auditor general. Everyone is endowed with the right to “equal protection and benefit of the law”. We are all also entitled to “administrative action that is lawful, reasonable, and procedurally fair”. Unlike the old South Africa – no doubt because of it – the new Rechtsstaat was one where the rule of law would be supreme, power would be limited, and the courts would have the final say. This edifice, and these ideals, are under threat. Lawlessness on the part of the state and those who run it is on the increase. The culprits run from the president down to clerks of the court, from directors general to immigration officials, from municipal managers to prison warders, from police generals to police constables, from cabinet ministers to petty bureaucrats.
