Wits Oral History Interviews: MOLEFE PHETO Facilitator: This is an interview with Molefe Pheto, we are in Johannesburg, the date is the 20th of April 2011, and interview is done by Brown Maaba. Thanks very much for your time. You were still talking about when you had this conference in London in 1980; you had nothing in terms of documents. Respondent: Yes, we had nothing, absolutely. You see, when we went out, others went to Europe, Africa, America and England and then we found out that we came from one philosophy but we were not an organization but we were parts of black consciousness movement, and then there was a feeling that we should come together to form an external movement, we did not know what we were going to call ourselves. I think there were attempts at fundraising in different places, somehow anyway those who were doing that got the money and congress was eventually held in London unfortunately because we wanted it in Africa, African countries did not want to touch a congress by blacks who were fighting against racism in South Africa, Kenya being one example. We ended up in London as our host country without any problems. Then there were things like, among others, then we’ll have to have some kind of a document/s to publicise us and particularly to sort of process our ideology, information document, political analysis and things like that, which came out of that congress, I am no more telling about the ins and outs of congress, I am just telling about how to go about being known and doing work, lets say in London but in other regions. -

FACEBOOK, YOUTH AND POLITICAL ACTION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ZIMBABWE AND SOUTH AFRICA A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES, RHODES UNIVERSITY by Admire Mare September 2015 ABSTRACT This comparative multi-sited study examines how, why and when politically engaged youths in distinctive national and social movement contexts use Facebook to facilitate political activism. As part of the research objectives, this study is concerned with investigating how and why youth activists in Zimbabwe and South Africa use the popular corporate social network site for political purposes. The study explores the discursive interactions and micro- politics of participation which plays out on selected Facebook groups and pages. It also examines the extent to which the selected Facebook pages and groups can be considered as alternative spaces for political activism. It also documents and analyses the various kinds of political discourses (described here as digital hidden transcripts) which are circulated by Zimbabwean and South African youth activists on Facebook fan pages and groups. Methodologically, this study adopts a predominantly qualitative research design although it also draws on quantitative data in terms of levels of interaction on Facebook groups and pages. Consequently, this study engages in data triangulation which allows me to make sense of how and why politically engaged youths from a range of six social movements in Zimbabwe and South Africa use Facebook for political action. In terms of data collection techniques, the study deploys social media ethnography (online participant observation), qualitative content analysis and in-depth interviews. -

Hardman* e-mail: [email protected] *School of Education University of Cape Town Cape Town, South Africa ABSTRACT Since the end of 2015, South African universities have been the stage of ongoing student protests that seek to shift the status quo of Higher Education Institutes through calls to decolonise the curriculum and enable free access to HEIs for all. One tool that students have increasingly turned to, to voice their opinions has been social media. In this article we argue that one can use Cultural Historical Activity Theory to understand how the activity systems of the traditional academy are shifting the wake of social media, with traditional power relations becoming more porous as students’ voices gain an audience. By tracing the historical development of CHAT, we show how 4th generation CHAT enables us to analyse potential power shifts in HEIs brought about through the use of social media. Keywords: decolonising the curriculum Higher Education, cultural historical activity theory INTRODUCTION 2015 was rife with controversy in South Africa, but it was an exciting time as important conversations around access to higher education, the inclusivity of South African universities and decolonisation became part of public conversation (Kamanzi 2015; Hlophe 2015; Masondo 2015). This movement became known under the hashtag of #Rhodesmustfall, indicating the need to decolonise academic spaces felt by those in the movement. In subsequent years this movement has transformed into #feesmustfall, indicating the students’ driving motive to gain access to institutes of higher learning. -

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT. In 2002, Gunther von Hagens’s display of plastinated corpses opened in London. Although the public was fascinated by Body Worlds, the media largely castigated the exhibition by dismissing it as a resuscitated Victorian freak show. By using the freak show analogy, the British press expressed their moral objection to this type of bodily display. But Body Worlds and nineteenth-century displays of human anomalies were linked in more complex and telling ways as both attempted to be simultaneously entertaining and educational. This essay argues that these forms of corpo- real exhibitionism are both examples of the dynamic relationship between the popular and professional cultures of the body that we often errone- ously think of as separate and discrete. By reading Body Worlds against the Victorian freak show, I seek to generate a fuller understanding of the his- torical and enduring relationship between exhibitionary culture and the discourses of science, and thus to argue that the scientific and the spectac- ular have been, and clearly continue to be, symbiotic modes of generating bodily knowledge. -

Hawley As commentators such as Lewis Nkosi and Malvern van Wyk Smith have noted, even though writers from South Africa occasionally engage in an exploration of traditional African values (as has preoccupied the writers of many other countries), their truly characteristic impetus is to focus readers' attention on the conflict between white masters and black servitors. As Bernth Lindfors and Reingard Nethersole have shown, South African writers have had a national obsession to describe in committed detail the practical implications of apartheid, and conse quently have produced a literature that is unabashedly didactic. Those who choose to write "metapolitical" fiction are generally attacked as collaborators in injustice. -

It is designed to give the reader an insight into the complex drivers at work over time, by showing how many events were occurring simultaneously. It is also designed to guide future research by serious scholars, who would verify all data independently as a matter of sound scholarship and never accept this as being valid in its own right. Read together, they indicate a trend, whereas read in isolation, they become sterile facts devoid of much meaning. Given that they are “facts”, their origin is generally not cited, as a fact belongs to nobody. On occasion where an interpretation is made, then the commentator’s name is cited as appropriate. Where similar information is shown for different dates, it is because some confusion exists on the exact detail of that event, so the reader must use caution when interpreting it, because a “fact” is something over which no alternate interpretation can be given. These events data are considered by the author to be relevant, based on his professional experience as a trained researcher. Own judgement must be used at all times . All users are urged to verify these data independently. The individual selection of data also represents the author’s bias, so the dataset must not be regarded as being complete. -

COPAS—Current Objectives of Postgraduate American Studies 18.2 (2017) Scars for Life(s) Jessica Suzanne Stokes ABSTRACT: This essay considers the relationship between performance, disability, and the ephemera of wounding experiences by using bodily scars as method for multi-temporal and multi-spatial reflection. Thinking through the “Freak Show” season of the television series American Horror Story, this essay locates coalitional potential in scars as they offer sites from which to create new stories of the past. KEYWORDS: Disability; Scar; Performance; Culture Operation Ephemera Some people take first day of school pictures to document the passage of time. Instead, I have x-rays, photos of blue hairnets that barely cover my head, and more photos of my feet right after the cast is sawed away, right before the stitches or staples come out because the surgeries I had were my father’s surgeries, and my brother’s surgeries and… These photos don’t document time linearly. They aren’t displayed in an album in a particular order. They all sit in one shoe box. Each merges with the next: purple cast fragments, screws lodged in bone, staples in a row, beforeafter while afterbefore, white walls, blue hairnets, hospital blankets, IV drips, purple cast fragments. Cecil Rhodes, one of nineteenth-century Britain's most ambitious imperialists, made an immense fortune through mining operations in southern Africa and also played an important but controversial role in the politics of the region. Throughout his adult life, he conducted romantic friendships with younger male associates. Cecil John Rhodes, born July 5, 1853 in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England, was the fifth of the nine sons of vicar Francis William Rhodes and Louisa Peacock Rhodes. He also had two sisters. Rhodes was always devoted to his warm-hearted mother but had a more distant, although not antagonistic, relationship with his aloof father. As a youth Rhodes nurtured ambitions of becoming a barrister, but he left school at sixteen to join his older brother Herbert Rhodes in Africa in 1870. Although Africa quickly became Rhodes' home, he traveled back and forth to England to complete his education. He began his fitful career at Oxford in 1873 and finally received his bachelor's degree in 1881. Rhodes had not enjoyed the most robust of health as a child. When his brother invited him to come to his cotton farm in Natal, the family doctor suggested that the change of climate might be beneficial. The Rhodes brothers soon abandoned cotton to pursue gold and diamonds, which had recently been discovered in South Africa. Through successful speculation in gold mine and diamond claims Rhodes became wealthy. He began the De Beers Mining Company in 1880 and founded Gold Fields of South Africa Ltd. -
