Dominici, Museo di Storia Naturale, Università di Firenze, Via La Pira 4, I-50121 Firenze, Italy; !$`"$ Fossil marine mollusks from Monte Postale, about one mile NE of Bolca (Verona and Vicenza Provinces) and 300 m N of the “Pesciara” (see the map in Papazzoni & Trevisani, 2006), were collected and catalogued at least since the 18th`[ seen, in the second decade of the 19th century, as means to date the rocks, and the already O"~P`[` geologists. In 1823, on the footsteps of Alberto Fortis (1778), Alexandre Brongniart drew stratigraphic sections and collected fossils in the Vicenza province, assigning the Bolca and Roncà invertebrates to one and the same geological interval. In the newly introduced 5~`[` Paris Basin. This meant to Brongniart that they belonged to the older Tertiary, and were distinct from the fossil shells described by Giambattista Brocchi in 1814, typifying the younger Tertiary (Rudwick, 2005). “I can relate the calcareous-trappic terrains of Northern Italy to the lower formation, the most ancient of the upper sediment [i.e., the Tertiary]. The primary purpose of these checklists is to faciliate for everyone, trying to identify organisms from the area, to know which species that earlier have been encountered there, or in neighbouring areas. A secondary purpose is to faciliate for non-experts to put as correct names as possible on organisms, including names of authors and years of description. So far these checklists are very preliminary. Due to restricted access to literature there are (some known, and probably many unknown) omissions in the lists. Certainly also several errors may be found, especially regarding taxa like Plathelminthes and Nematoda, where the experience of the compiler is very rudimentary, or. e.g. Porifera, where, at least in certain families, taxonomic confusion seems to prevail. Tertiary Research 17 (3+4) 75-137 15 Plates, 1 Text fig. 1 Table Leiden January 1997 The Early Eocene London Clay Formation mollusc fauna of the former Bursledon Brickworks, Lower Swanwick, Hampshire PAUL JEFFERY AND STEVE TRACEY Abstract:.Construction of the Civil Aviation Authority's new en-route centre on the site of the former Bursledon Brickworks at Lower Swanwick, during 1991-1992, re-exposed sections in the London Clay unavailable since this site fell into disuse in 1974. New material collected from the recent excavations has prompted a reappraisal of the mollusc fauna of this site. This is reviewed along with material collected during the working life of the brickworks and now held in the Natural History Museum, London. The mollusc fauna consists of 146 species and is listed in systematic order, with an indication of local stratigraphic range and palaeoecological interpretation. The taphonomy of the mollusc fauna is discussed, and a number of notes given detailing taxonomic revisions. Three new species of bivalve are described: Semeloidea curryi, Siliqua kingi and Abra (Syndosmya) cygnea and three gastropods: Entomope semipunctata, Solariorbis lawsoni and Epalxis kempi. Lectotypes are designated for Eopleurotoma simillima crassilinea and Microdrillia tricincta. The majority of the fauna is illustrated photographically, in most cases for the first time. P. www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The largest known cowrie and the iterative evolution of giant cypraeid gastropods Stefano Dominici1*, Mariagabriella Fornasiero2 & Luca Giusberti3 Based on the fossil record, we explore the macroevolutionary relationship between species richness and gigantism in cowries (Cypraeidae), the best-studied family of gastropods, with a global diversity distribution that parallels that of tropical corals, mangroves and seagrasses. We introduce Vicetia bizzottoi sp. nov. based on a Priabonian fossil found in northeastern Italy, the largest documented cowrie found so far and the youngest of a lineage of Eocene Gisortiinae species. The Gisortiinae stratigraphic record in western Europe indicates that species selection favoured large size and armouring of the shell. Palaeoecology and per-stage species richness suggest that gigantism occurred in peripheral habitats with respect to diversity hotspots, where smaller species were favoured. The Eocene–Oligocene boundary was marked by a turnover and the Chattian global warming favoured small-sized species of derived clades. Species selection leading to gigantism is further documented in Miocene lineages of Zoila and Umbilia, in the southern hemisphere, two extant genera distributed at the periphery of modern diversity hotspots, suggesting that the negative relationship between size and diversity is a recurring pattern in the evolutionary history of cowries. This palaeontological evidence is projected onto the existing hypotheses that explain analogous biogeographic patterns in various other taxa. Likewise, body size-species richness negative relationship was possibly driven in cowries by physiological, ecological and life history constraints. Covariance between community species richness and body size of resident species have been studied in a variety of marine invertebrates, suggesting diferent relationships of these two important ecological traits. -
