Settlement Profile: Cornwood 1 Introduction
Cornwood is located about 8 miles east of Plymouth and 4 miles north-west of Ivybridge, in an elevated position on the fringe of the moor. The main part of the village sits above the valley of the River Yealm. It stands on the junction of an old trade route between Totnes and Tavistock, and Plymouth and the moor. Wool, tin and cattle were the principal
commodities. Today, china clay is a dominant local industry, although farming continues to play an important role.
The village has a good mix of local facilities for a
village of its size, including a primary school and a village hall with a good size car park.
