Unbelievable, but the headline says it all – Howick Pak, needing 194, totally on the ropes at 106/8 and then 147/9, got out of the mire. Congratulations indeed to Dave Winn on some superb batting and to Naude and then Greenwood for sticking with him!

The tension must have been huge – your Editor missed it all being on a family fshing excursion. Enormous pressures – on the batsmen and then, as HP’s score advanced, on the fieldsmen and, ultimately, on the umpires. Back to the beginning, Parnell’s early order for once failed dismally but Dave Goddard led a spirited recovery with solid support from Tom Hills and young Josh Fisher. Billy Sanger chimed in at the end with a very useful 17 to give the bowlers something to work on. And ther bowlers did respond – brilliantly! tumbled including Glenn Phillips, a rising star who hit 20 off just 13 balls before being caught by Josh off Tom Hills. Hillsy had already picked up Walsh and then had their skipper, de Boorder, caught by Tim at slip. Rav hit next trapping the younger Phillips lbw – 34/4 and it was all Parnells. Another to Hillsy, then two to Mitch McCann. Billy Sanger had success thanks to a superb catch on the boundary by Ben Rainger – 106/8 and the game was, to all intents and purposes, in the bag! Not according to Dave Winn, HP’s no. 5 – he then proceeded to play the innings of his life. Naude gave solid support and helped take the score to 147 before being caught by Dave off Rav. Last man in – still 47 needed. Greenwood, no. 11, held the fort at one end whilst Winn continued on. One disputed caught behind was disallowed, Winn’s ton came up and then, eventually with another 7 ball left, the winning hit to take the total to 198 and a quite etraordinary win to Howick Pakuranga. Again congratulations to Dave Winn , a masterly ton!

ADDING TO HIS REPUTATION AS ANOTHER HUNTER/GATHERER!

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade: Limited (50) Overs Minor Championship 22 Oct. Parnell vs. Grafton United at Shore Road Reserve 1a.

PARNELL 253/7 (50) Schalk Conradie 67, Ryan Turner 87* GRAFTON UNITED 96 Karun Phogat 4/23 (10), Rudi Bisschoff 2/15 (6.2), Elliot Jaffe 2/11 (6) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 157 RUNS

ACTING , RYAN TURNER, REPORTS: Having been washed out the previous week, the Reserves were looking to start their season in style against Grafton at Shore Road. Stand-in skipper Ryan Turner got the team off to a great start by losing the toss, only to be flummoxed by Grafton's decision to bowl first on an artificial pitch and a sublime outfield. Not a team to look a gift horse in the mouth, the Reserves set about their business of building a competitive total for Grafton to chase. Unfortunately, early wickets made this pursuit difficult with only Matt Vercoe-Curtis from the top four applying himself for a solid 22. However, with his dismissal, Parnell were in a spot of bother at 49/4 in the 13th over. Parnell's new international recruit, Schalk Conradie, and skipper Ryan Turner then set about a recovery job. By waiting for the bad ball and rotating the strike, the pair built a resolute partnership of 117 in 23 overs. Schalk playing his first game for Parnell, displayed a strong repertoire of shots all around the ground, with some sublime straight drives being the highlight. With his dismissal for a well crafted 67 and Parnell at 166/5, there was a need to build on this foundation for the final 15 overs. The lower order was up to the challenge and some lusty blows propelled Parnell to a very competitive 253/8, with Ryan ending unbeaten on 87. Parnell's bowlers then came out full of venom and intent. Karun Phogat, another new recruit, was devastating and ripped out Grafton's top four in short order, with one batter losing his middle stump after not playing a shot. Karun ending with fantastic figures of 4- 23 from 10 overs. But this was not just a one man show. The old hand Rudi picked up two wickets with some accurate and Elliot Jaffe, playing his first game for the Reserves, bowled with intent and also picked up two wickets, including Grafton's only set batsman. With this decisive blow, the game was effectively in the bag. And, although Grafton's lower order showed some application, this merely delayed Parnell's march to the finish. Grafton all out for 96 in the 40th over. As always, there are elements that can be improved. But, overall, a very encouraging start to the Reserves season.

Matthew Vercoe=Curtis at the crease with Ryan Turner – Ryan, your new spec sure make a difference!

Schalk Conradie – a solid 67 and Karun the destroyer!

THIRDS – 3b Grade: Limited (50) Overs Minor Championship 22 Oct. Parnell vs. Suburbs new Lynn at Riversdale Rd

SUBURBS NL 115 (30) Pete Hickman 3/26 (9), Gavin Poole 3/3 (3) PARNELL 117/4 (19.3) Ben Aveyard 49*, Hayden Storey 19 RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 6 WICKETS

Tom Urry stood in as captain for this game and the team chalked up a resounding success. SNL were totally out classed. First, Pete Hickman bowled unchanged and with a great deal of hostility. Our skipper, likewise, had them at sixes and sevens with his pace and bounce and, finally, Gavin cleaned up the tail and helped his average no end. Congratulations to Ben Aveyard – a good solid knock in which only the winning of the game stopped him recording his first half century for Parnell. The standard of the opposition’s bowling was disappointing. Hayden was greeted by a succession of full tosses most of which were no balled and the win was brought up in the 20th over without any scares.

Pre- Season Game – Our Pressies in the Hawkes Bay

22 Oct. Parnell vs. Clifton CC Clifton, H.B.

Having ventured earlier to tackle Ollie’s old club, St Albans, in , Simon Payton took the team to one of his old stamping grounds – Clifton CC. A marvellous setting – the ground is on a farm with it’s own pavilion. No game report but, as all returned safely and attended practice last Wednesday, your Editor believes that the trip was and outstanding success despite being interrupted by a spectacular thunderstorm. More to the point, our aging contingent was aided by the inclusion of a couple of the younger brigade which enhanced movement in the field.

King’s School – Winner of the NZ Post Regional Final

From Auckland Cricket’s Website:

King’s School have won the NZ Post Cup Regional Final while Viscount School has claimed the NZ Post Shield, both teams earning the right to play in the national finals down in Lincoln. Kings’ victory came on Thursday against Auckland Normal Intermediate by 42 runs while Viscount defeated Belmont Intermediate by 10 wickets. King’s batted first and scored at over a run a ball throughout their 20 overs to post an imposing 137/7. The innings was anchored by opener Louie Chandulal who scored 61 runs from 47 deliveries including seven fours. Freddie Bell also showed some poise at the crease scoring four boundaries in his 29. Nikeel Daji was the pick of the ANI bowlers taking 3/20 from his four overs. Opener Henry Drillen led the reply for the ANI side, scoring 43 runs but apart from the support of Ujval Gupta with 20, none of the remaining batsmen could get going leaving ANI stranded on 95/9 from their 20 overs. Freddie Bell and Nick Tapper both took three wickets a piece for the King’s side, a team deserving of their place in the national finals. Meanwhile, Belmont Intermediate batted first and scored 92/8 from their 20 overs. Anna Browning (57*) carried her bat through an innings which featured 7 ducks. Mercy Tomai was the pick of the bowlers for Viscount with 3/7 from two overs. In reply, the openers for Viscount got going and never looked back. Tame Taupau scoring 40 from 39 balls and Adyhana Urika 26 runs with extras accounting for the rest of the total. CONGRATULATIONS TO KING’S SCHOOL – VERY BEST WISHES FOR THE FINAL TO BE PLAYED AT LINCOLN

Also, please note your diaries: DAY – Sat. 17 December

Luncheon to Celebrate “Merv Wallace Day” To be held in the Mike Simpson Lounge, 32 Shore Road, Remuera, Saturday, 17 December 2016 – gather from 11.00am for Noon.

Merv, if he had not died 9 years ago, would be celebrating his 100th birthday on 19 December 2016. Merv joined Parnell CC as a 15 year old in the 1932-33 season. Almost immediately he became a mainstay of our batting, quickly attained selection for Auckland and then NZ. For NZ he toured England in 1937, when he topped the batting averages (1641 at 41.02), and again in 1949 when he scored 970 in May and, overall, 1722 at 49.20. Merv captained NZ vs. South Africa in ‘53/54. In March 1956 he was Coach to the NZ team that won it’s first Test after 26 unsuccessful years. All that is nothing compared to his contribution to the Parnell CC – for 60+ years as player, captain and then Patron – Merv was superb. A brilliant coach and mentor to the young, we treasure our memories of Merv and take this opportunity to celebrate his “Ton” with Vonnie, Adele and Greg and other members of the Wallace family. VSL - Over 60s, Queensland Tour & News

Peter McDermott has just confirmed VSL’s sub-sponsorship for another year and the Club is hugely grateful. Such financial assistance is of enormous help to us, particularly as it enables us to provide our wonderful coaching team.

Dianne McDermott asks for help – a couple of people have pulled out of VSL’s Queensland’s Tour because of work commitments. Should be a great trip & the itinerary and details are:

There are two price structures because of the type of resort accommodation in northern Queensland and we didn’t want to “assume” what everyone wanted.

The “expensive” package is water view; beach front and executive rooms; The “moderate” package is guest rooms, rainforest and de luxe rooms according to the property descriptions.

Itinerary for Queensland Tour: Friday 4th November: Fly into Brisbane and on to Cairns. Accommodation: Double Tree by Hilton Cairns Plaza Saturday 5th November: At leisure in Cairns Sunday 6th November: Fixture in Cairns Monday 7th November: Drive to Mission Beach (120 minutes). Accommodation: Castaways Resort Tuesday 8th November: Fixture at Innisfail Wednesday 9th November: At leisure at Mission Beach Thursday 10th November: Fixture in Tully Friday 11th November: Drive to Townsville (180 minutes). Accommodation: Ville Resort. Saturday 12th November: At leisure in Townsville Sunday 13th November: Fixture in Townsville Monday 14th November: At leisure in Townsville Tuesday 15th November: Fly to Brisbane and home

Inclusions – Accommodation (full bed and breakfast); rental cars; cricket match costs; playing shirts and caps. Not included – airfares and meals other than those provided by hosts. Prices – “Expensive” twin share or double – AUD2,595.00 players / AUD2,295.00 non-players; “Moderate” twin share or double – AUD2,295.00 players / AUD2,095.00 non-players.

We have a great group of the old core and I really think this will be the last one I organise. Grant Baker has taken over the Australian Over 60’s mantel and when the team voted on it in Hobart last year – the more competitive guys have headed that way, and the more social the Queensland way. Such great memories from so many fantastic times with such lovely people.

With kindest regards, Dianne.
