Abstract This thesis is the result of a qualitative case study conducted within the congregation of St. Philip's fican Orthodox Church in the neighbourhood of Whitney Pier in Sydney, Nova Scotia. St. Philip's is the only parish of the AOC in Canada. The purpose of this thesis is to understand

    Antigua and Barbuda an annotated critical bibliography by Riva Berleant-Schiller and Susan Lowes, with Milton Benjamin Volume 182 of the World Bibliographical Series 1995 Clio Press ABC Clio, Ltd. (Oxford, England; Santa Barbara, California; Denver, Colorado) Abstract: Antigua and Barbuda, two islands of Leeward Island group in the eastern Caribbean, together make up a single independent state. The union is an uneasy one, for their relationship has always been ambiguous and their differences in history and economy greater than their similarities. Barbuda was forced unwillingly into the union and it is fair to say that Barbudan fears of subordination and exploitation under an Antiguan central government have been realized. Barbuda is a flat, dry limestone island. Its economy was never dominated by plantation agriculture. Instead, its inhabitants raised food and livestock for their own use and for provisioning the Antigua plantations of the island's lessees, the Codrington family. After the end of slavery, Barbudans resisted attempts to introduce commercial agriculture and stock-rearing on the island. They maintained a subsistence and small cash economy based on shifting cultivation, fishing, livestock, and charcoal-making, and carried it out under a commons system that gave equal rights to land to all Barbudans. Antigua, by contrast, was dominated by a sugar plantation economy that persisted after slave emancipation into the twentieth century. Its economy and goals are now shaped by the kind of high-impact tourism development that includes gambling casinos and luxury hotels. The Antiguan government values Barbuda primarily for its sparsely populated lands and comparatively empty beaches. This bibliography is the only comprehensive reference book available for locating information about Antigua and Barbuda.

    Cultural Assets of NovA scotiA African Nova scotian tourism Guide 2 Come visit the birthplace of Canada’s Black community. Situated on the east coast of this beautiful country, Nova Scotia is home to approximately 20,000 residents of African descent. Our presence in this province traces back to the 1600s, and we were recorded as being present in the provincial capital during its founding in 1749. Come walk the lands that were settled by African Americans who came to the Maritimes—as enslaved labour for the New England Planters in the 1760s, Black Loyalists between 1782 and 1784, Jamaican Maroons who were exiled from their home lands in 1796, Black refugees of the War of 1812, and Caribbean immigrants to Cape Breton in the 1890s. The descendants of these groups are recognized as the indigenous African Nova Scotian population. We came to this land as enslaved and free persons: labourers, sailors, farmers, merchants, skilled craftspersons, weavers, coopers, basket-makers, and more. We brought with us the remnants of our cultural identities as we put down roots in our new home and over time, we forged the two together and created our own unique cultural identity. Today, some 300 years later, there are festivals and gatherings throughout the year that acknowledge and celebrate the vibrant, rich African Nova Scotian culture.     A Toolshed from Gate #4: The Dominion Iron and Steel Company and the Formation of an African American Church JENNIFER REID In 1900, as part of an industrial boom in Cape Breton Island, the Dominion Iron and Steel Company began production in Sydney, NS. As a result of a program of active recruitment on the part of the company, a number of African Americans were induced to emigrate from the economically ravaged islands of the West Indies and to settle in Sydney. Relocated by the company in a area separated from the rest of the city (Whitney Pier), the community numbered 600 people by 1923,1 and had become the most visibly segregated community in Sydney.2 Throughout the 1920s, black immigrants in Whitney Pier created a number of community organizations;3 and, carrying on a pattern of church affiliation established during the previous decade, attended various churches and missions without demonstrating a firm communal commitment to any. In 1928 a fledgling congregation succeeded in erecting St. Philip’s African Orthodox Church, and almost overnight St. Philip’s became the fulcrum of the black community.4 Historians have attempted in a variety of ways to account for the failure of other churches in Whitney Pier and the success of St. Philip’s in becoming the focus of this immigrant community. Steel making has been an essential DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1026154ar part of Cape Breton Island’s economy and landscape since the mid-nineteenth century. Distinctive traditions of work and leisure began to emerge amidst the grid-patterned streets and company-owned homes of workers and Publisher(s) managers.
