Advertising Section ................................................................ 193 INTRODUCTION HE Yearbook of American Churches is a reference work presenting T comprehensive information mainly about organized religion in the United States. A directory of certain of the Canadian churches is, however, included. The Yearbook for 1941 consists chiefly of directories, nine of which list a large number of officials of church agencies and of organizations in which churches have an interest. A new feature of this edition is the inclusion of a complete directory of cooperative field organizations, made available by The Inter-Council Field Department. The Annals of Organized Religion were prepared by five authors who summarized major events of 1939 and 1940. These are very brief histories. For interpretation the authors are personally responsible. The section on statistics presents the *‘latest information* * available, par­ ticularly the figures for church membership. A compilation of the recent data for all the known religious bodies in the United States has been made by the Editor. This includes membership officially reported by the statis­ tician, or as made available by the Census of Religious Bodies, 1936. This Census was incomplete for certain bodies, but regarded as very satisfactory by others. Many bodies which do not make annual tabulations of church membership have specifically instructed us to use the 1936 figures, which were made public in 1940, and are “the latest information” available. For explanatory notes about the statistics, see the section below. The Editor of the Yearbook simply collects and presents, often in brief form, data supplied by others. He does not engage in original research. Therefore what is here presented is sent in by cooperative individuals from official sources, or, in a few instances, from published yearbooks or the publications of the Bureau of the Census. The Yearbook is “edited under the auspices of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America,” but the content is inclusive and becomes a reference work touching upon all the interests of organized religion in the nation. This Yearbook became a useful work for the years 1933 to 1939 through four biennial editions, largely through the devotion of the late Dr. H. C. Weber, of the General Council of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. The present Editor knows at first hand of the valuable contributions made by Dr. ^Weber, usually at great personal sacrifice. The Editor is also aware of his personal debt to the one who has preceded him.     Antigua and Barbuda an annotated critical bibliography by Riva Berleant-Schiller and Susan Lowes, with Milton Benjamin Volume 182 of the World Bibliographical Series 1995 Clio Press ABC Clio, Ltd. (Oxford, England; Santa Barbara, California; Denver, Colorado) Abstract: Antigua and Barbuda, two islands of Leeward Island group in the eastern Caribbean, together make up a single independent state. The union is an uneasy one, for their relationship has always been ambiguous and their differences in history and economy greater than their similarities. Barbuda was forced unwillingly into the union and it is fair to say that Barbudan fears of subordination and exploitation under an Antiguan central government have been realized. Barbuda is a flat, dry limestone island. Its economy was never dominated by plantation agriculture. Instead, its inhabitants raised food and livestock for their own use and for provisioning the Antigua plantations of the island's lessees, the Codrington family. After the end of slavery, Barbudans resisted attempts to introduce commercial agriculture and stock-rearing on the island. They maintained a subsistence and small cash economy based on shifting cultivation, fishing, livestock, and charcoal-making, and carried it out under a commons system that gave equal rights to land to all Barbudans. Antigua, by contrast, was dominated by a sugar plantation economy that persisted after slave emancipation into the twentieth century. Its economy and goals are now shaped by the kind of high-impact tourism development that includes gambling casinos and luxury hotels. The Antiguan government values Barbuda primarily for its sparsely populated lands and comparatively empty beaches. This bibliography is the only comprehensive reference book available for locating information about Antigua and Barbuda.

    Publishing Literature for the Future of Jewish Evangelism Barry Rubin Messianic Jewish Communications Steve Cohen‟s paper on tract passing was persuasive. Broadsides have influenced many people. In fact, I myself received some broadsides in 1972, which got my attention enough that I ultimately came to believe that Yeshua was the Messiah. I also wrote a few broadsides in my days with Jews for Jesus and handed out what seems like millions of these tracts in six years with Jews for Jesus, while serving in several other capacities. There is a place for this method of evangelism. Yet, it took more than broadsides to convince me to believe, as is true with most Jewish people. Broadsides get attention, but more is needed, something more substantial. Before I trusted Yeshua in 1973, at The Lederer Foundation building in Baltimore, I was given some of the books published by this organization, many of which you have seen. I have no statistics, but I know many Jews were brought closer to Yeshua through these books. From 1980-1982, I served as director of a small Jewish mission in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and then joined what was then, the American Board of Missions to the Jews, now CPM, until 1988. Toward the end of my time with CPM, I met Einspruch, the widow of Dr. Henry Einspruch, director of The Lederer Foundation, at a Passover Seder. Marie asked me to consider taking over this ministry. In fact, she had previously talked to Steve Cohen, since Lederer had been a Lutheran ministry and her board thought a Lutheran should be the director.

The new religion that arose in the USA focused on the needs and social dramas that were specific of the newly arrived to the urban world of the large North-American cities, those who inhabited the periphery of these cities, those that were socially, economically, and ethnically excluded from the core of society. We also analysed how the same social drama was the basis for the development of Pentecostalism in Latin America and, especially, in Brazil. In this country, a great mass of excluded individuals, also residents of urban peripheries (which proves the non-traditional and modern characteristic of these sectors), found in Pentecostalism the promises of answers to their dramas, mainly the anxiety to become integrated to a world in which they did not belong before. Such integration was embedded in the promise present in the modernity of social ascension.
