For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). Ethnic Minority Writing: The Complexities Surrounding Authenticity, Translation, and Representation in a Global Environment Samuel Rose ※ Abstract: This paper discusses the complex issues surrounding authenticity and ethnic minority writing. It also addresses the broader global issues involved when an individual is educated in the West and then attempts to speak for his or her particular ethnic group. The paper concludes with a specifi c example regarding the complexities of translating a Japanese passage into English and discusses the little-known concept of “deterritorialization.” Key words: authenticity, ethnic minority writing, translation and representation, and deterritorialization Who is an authentic ethnic minority writer? How do we know if an individual truly has the authority to speak for his or her particular community? Does a Western education limit one’s ability to speak for his or her ethnic culture? If we assume that an individual does have the authority to speak for a particular group, can his or her writing be translated into another language and still retain the intended meaning? These are just a few of the questions that arise when discussing ethnic minority writing in Western nations. In this essay, I will use Joseph Pivato’s “Representation of Ethnicity as Problem: Essence or Construction” and attempt to answer the questions above. I will then conclude with an example that demonstrates just how complex the problems of representation in ethnic minority writing can be. ITALIAN CANADIAN WRITING: THE DIFFERENCE A FEW DECADES MAKE* Linda Hutcheon** The article explores the changes in the last 40 years both in the language of Canadian ethnic literature itself and in its authors’ self-identifying as Italian Canadian in light of the deve- lopments of those years both in ‘identity politics’ and in Canada’s national sense of selfhood. En route it tests the usefulness of various labels used, over time, to identify these writings against the literary corpus produced for almost thirty years now by Nino Ricci, born and raised in Canada, by Italian immigrant parents. This writer distrusts coherent story, sees closure as a self-imposed death, mistrusts the author/himself(1) so much he over-glosses his own text. Not one of his works has managed to escape his own arm's length and after-the-fact commentary, but we must approach that commentary with doubt. There is no one metaphor, no one autobiographical detail, that can help us to fix this master of the art of deception, this trickster incarnate, this expert at the sleight of hand. Critical responses to his fiction and poetry range from outrage to awe; he has been praised as an innovator and damned as an overly intellectual adherent of the post-modernist school of thought. In a recently published conversation, his close friend Rudy Wiebe, responded to a deconstructionist remark with the exasperated words: "Bob, you're always horsing around with language!"(2) In Kroetsch's writing, words do not mean what they usually mean; language goes beyond signification and contains its own possibilities: "The person who becomes a writer is a person who starts to notice the language itself instead of what it signifies."(3) That concentration on the possibilities of language is perhaps the most telling aspect of Kroetsch's approach to literature, both fiction and poetry. -

Possibility-Space and Its Imaginative Variations in Alice Munro’s Short Stories. Pp.192. Stockholm: ISBN: 978-91-7155-770-4 With its perennial interest in the seemingly ordinary lives of small-town people, Alice Munro’s fiction displays a deceptively simple surface reality that on closer scrutiny reveals intricate levels of unexpected complexity about the fundamentals of human experience: love, choice, mortality, faith and the force of language. This study takes as its main purpose the explora- tion of Munro’s stories in terms of the intricacy of emotions in the face of commonplace events of life and their emerging possibilities. I argue that the ontological levels of fiction and reality remain in the realm of the real; these levels exist and merge as the possibilities of each other. Munro’s realism is explored in terms of its connection to possibilities that arise out of a particu- lar type of fatality. The phenomenon of possibility permeates Munro’s stories. An inves- tigation of this phenomenon shows a curious paradox between possibility and necessity. In order to discuss the complexity of this paradox I introduce the temporal/spatial concept of possibility-space and notions of the fatal. -
Notes on Realism in Modern English-Canadian Fiction
NOTES ON REALISM IN MODERN ENGLISH-CANADIAN FICTION Matt Cohen A REALISTIC NOVEL is USUALLY TAKEN to mean a novel in which narrative is the connecting thread, in which not only does thought or action lead to subsequent connected thought or action, but does so in groups of words organized into logical sentences, paragraphs, chapters, etc. But "realistic novels" are also novels written about "reality" — as opposed to novels perceived to be about something which is not "real." Thus, aside from realistic novels there are novels which are termed gothic, or science fiction, or fantasies, or dream journals, or simply "experimental" — a class of novel which conjures up the image of a fanatically mad scientist blindly pounding at a type- writer (or, latterly, a word processor). In Canada, the novelistic technique most practised by writers, and most accepted by readers, critics, and academics, has been from the beginning and still remains the conventional realistic narrative, though there have been some interesting innovations. One of the characteristics non-Canadians always notice about Canadian novels is that an amazingly large proportion of them are set in the country. Even of that fiction set not in the countryside but in the city, much portrays the city not as a cosmopolitan centre but as a small town. There is, I think, a political reason for this. Canada, like the rest of the "developed" countries, is a place in which the dominant way of life is an urban one. Just as American culture is dominated by Los Angeles and New York, as British culture is dominated by London, as French culture is dominated by Paris, so, too, is English-Canadian culture dominated by Toronto. -

THE MAINSTREAM Ronald Sutherland A.LONG WITH A NUMBER of other activities in Canada, literary criticism has picked up a great deal of momentum in the last decade. Like the St. Lawrence River it has deepened and broadened as it moved along, and to a large extent it also has divided in two at the Island of Montreal. In view of the mighty St. Lawrence's present state of pollution, however, it would perhaps be injudicious to pursue the analogy. But it can be said with reasonable confidence that the steady increase in the volume of Canadian literary criticism is having and will continue to have a beneficial effect on creative writing in this country. I imagine that there is nothing more debilitating for a writer than to be ignored, to be working in a vacuum as it were. Frederick Philip Grove comes immediately to mind. Despite the recent increase in the volume of literary criticism, however, several major problems remain to be resolved. They are basic problems which glare like a hole in a girl's stocking or a pair of mismatched shoes, but they can also be covered up and ignored. They would seem to invite attention, and then again they do not. For they are often charged with emotional overtones. For instance, there is the question of who precisely is a Canadian author. Anthologies and literary histories, to say the least, have tended to be gloriously free of discrimina- tion, grabbing all that could possibly be grabbed. One wonders, indeed, how Jacques Maritain, Wyndham Lewis, Willa Cather and Ernest Hemingway, all of whom lived for a time in Canada, escaped the conscription, not to mention Alexis de Tocqueville, Charles Dickens and Henry David Thoreau.
