VARIATION AND EVOLUTION IN SOUTH AMERICAN CLARKIA D. M. MOORE and HARLAN LEWiS Botany Department, University of Leicester and Botany Department, University of California, Los Angeles Received5.V.65 1.INTRODUCTION THEgenus Clarkia (Onagracee), currently considered to contain 36 species, is restricted to the western parts of North and South America (fig. i). The 35 North American species are distributed from Baja California to British Columbia (300N.to 48° N.), most of them occurring in California. The South American populations, which have a smaller though still considerable latitudinal spread (290 30' S. to 42030'S.), comprise a single variable species, Clarkia tenella (Cay.) H. and M. Lewis (Lewis and Lewis, within which four sub.. species have been recognised (Moore and Lewis, i 965b). Clarkia tenella is tetraploid, having n 34 (Hiorth, 1941; Raven and Lewis, 1959) and 2fl32 (Moore and Lewis, i965b). It is placed in section Godetia, together with seven North American species, and shows its closest affinities with the only tetraploid among these, C. davyi (Jeps.) H. and M. Lewis. A study of artificial hybrids between C. tenella and C. davji, together with pakeo-ecological evidence, led Raven and Lewis (i) to hypothesise that the two species were derived from a common tetraploid ancestor which had traversed the tropics by long-distance dispersal during or since the Late-Tertiary and given rise to the populations now comprising C. tenella. Detailed study of the variation within Clarkia tenella was made possible by a field trip to Chile and Argentina during 1960-61 and by subsequent experimental work at Leicester and Los Angeles. -

KIIS DENMARK, Summer 2018 HIST 490 Viking Age to Modern State Instructor: Dr. Carolyn Dupont Contact information: [email protected] Course Description, Objectives, and Content: This course will explore the broad sweep of Danish history. We will explore daily life in Viking society, Viking religion and culture, and, of course, the Viking exploits abroad. We will examine in detail the transformation of Denmark from a pagan, Viking society to a modern Christian state. Training our lens on more recent times, we examine Danish society and Denmark’s role in global affairs at the height of its power in the 16th century. In the final sessions, we will look at the occupation of Denmark by the Germans during World War II, as well as Denmark’s astounding rescue of its Jewish population. Students should be very aware that the course will not proceed chronologically. We will move back and forth among the various historical eras, because we want to take advantage of historical sites that cannot necessarily be visited in chronological order. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) Describe and explain the major facets of Viking society 2) Describe and explain the reason for the Vikings’ ultimate embrace of Christianity 3) Identify and describe key turning points and trends in Danish history 4) Identify and describe how the major events and trends in modern European history have unfolded in Denmark 5) Demonstrate an understanding of how perspective and vantage point shape the telling of history 6) Critically evaluate the role played by perspective and vantage point at sites where Denmark’s history is told Readings (all readings will be provided by the instructor and placed in a Dropbox folder) Excerpts from Knud J.V. -

Lewis and Lewis (1955) felt that for Clarkia purpurea there were ephemeral local races due to hybridization. Some of these could be separated based on conspicuous morphological characters to the subspecies level. However, these subspecies were artificial and not distinct geographical nor ecological races. -

WEDBERG University of California at Los Angeles INTRODUCTION Chromosome studies in the Onagraceae are well known from the extensive work of many investigators on the ring-forming species of Oenothera (see Cleland, 1950). In another genus, Clarkia, chromosome number has been determined for all the known species and several species have been studied in detail in regard to structural heterozygotes and supernumerary chromosomes (for references, see Lewis and Lewis, 1955). In both of these genera, chromosome studies have contributed greatly to an understanding of phylogenetic relationships, and in the latter they have been of great value in the delimitation of species. Consequently, we have examined chromosomes of a number of other taxa of the Onagraceae, because we have been curious to know the pattern of chromosome differentiation in the family, and because we think that such data are indispensable to an understanding of phylogenetic relationships within the family. -
