Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been acknowledged in the thesis. iii Abstract Ancient Krete perceived itself, and was perceived from outside, as rather different from the rest of Greece, particularly with respect to religion, social structure, and laws. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods. -

Bacchylides 17: Singing and Usurping the Paean Maria Pavlou ACCHYLIDES 17, a Cean commission performed on Delos, has been the subject of extensive study and is Bmuch admired for its narrative artistry, elegance, and excellence. The ode was classified as a dithyramb by the Alex- andrians, but the Du-Stil address to Apollo in the closing lines renders this classification problematic and has rather baffled scholars. The solution to the thorny issue of the ode’s generic taxonomy is not yet conclusive, and the dilemma paean/ dithyramb is still alive.1 In fact, scholars now are more inclined to place the poem somewhere in the middle, on the premise that in antiquity the boundaries between dithyramb and paean were not so clear-cut as we tend to believe.2 Even though I am 1 Paean: R. GUILT, REDEMPTION AND RECEPTION: REPRESENTING ROMAN FEMALE SUICIDE ELEANOR RUTH GLENDINNING, BA (Hons) MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy DECEMBER 2011 Abstract This thesis examines representations of Roman female suicide in a variety of genres and periods from the history and poetry of the Augustan age (especially Livy, Ovid, Horace, Propertius and Vergil), through the drama and history of the early Principate (particularly Seneca and Tacitus), to some of the Church fathers (Tertullian, Jerome and Augustine) and martyr acts of Late Antiquity. The thesis explores how the highly ambiguous and provocative act of female suicide was developed, adapted and reformulated in historical, poetic, dramatic and political narratives. The writers of antiquity continually appropriated this controversial motif in order to comment on and evoke debates about issues relating to the moral, social and political concerns of their day: the ethics of a voluntary death, attitudes towards female sexuality, the uses and abuses of power, and traditionally expected female behaviour. In different literary contexts, and in different periods of Roman history, writers and thinkers engaged in this same intellectual exercise by utilising the suicidal female figure in their works. ii Acknowledgments I would like to thank the Arts and Humanities Research Council for providing the financial assistance necessary for me to carry out this research. THE AMAZONS: 1 DEVELOPMENT AND FUNCTIONS ) The Un-society 0/ Amazons Amazons are a familiar sight in the Greek mythologicalland scape. Physiologically, they are female, but they have encroached on the social role of men: 'They were considered men because of their spirit (elJ'1j,.uxea) rather than women because of their physiolo gy (qJlJOL<;)' (Lysias 2.4). According to the popular story - rarely reflected in art - they 'pinched out' or cut off the right breast so as not to impede their javelin-throwing. But as Tzetzes observed, that would have killed them: the more rational- or rationalised alternative, going back to Hippokrates and his sources, is that they cauterised it before it grew, with a special iron tooF). This then explains their name: the Breastless - unless it is because they do not eat barley-bread ÜUl1;a), but tortoises, lizards and snakes3), in which case they have wasted their time tampering with their breasts. In fact these are all popular etymologies and their name, of unknown origin, has determined their anatomy. 'Al!a1;6ve<; invoke a story just as 'AcpQOÖLL'Ij demands to be 'born from foam' (Hes. Theog. 195-8). Defying the normal roles assigned to females by Greeks, Amazons go so far as to exclude males from their society. They are 'man-hating' (crtuyavoQe<; 'Aesch.' Prom. 724) and 'man-Iess' (a.vavöQoL Aesch. Supp!. 287). The Imagery of Bacchylides' "Ode 5" Stern, Jacob Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies; Spring 1967; 8, 1; ProQuest pg. 35 The Imagery of Bacchylides' Ode 5 Jacob Stern CBPTBD by most c~tics as pertinent to any interpretation of i{Bacchylides' Ode 5 is the scholion to Iliad 21.194: 1 according to the scholiast Pindar told the story of a proposal of marriage between Heracles and Deianeira, which took place in Hades after the death of Meleager; in this narration the offer was made by Meleager, who desired to protect his sister from the awful Achelous. In Bacchyl ides' Ode 5 the plot is different in one important regard: it is rather Heracles himself, moved to tears by the recital of Meleager's story, who asks whether Meleager has a sister whom he might make his bride. Bacchylides' version of the myth2 has been thoroughly discussed by the critics, who, in their interpretation of it, fall into two groups. In the first we find those who, surprisingly enough, take it in conjunction with the abrupt end of the myth as humorous. Zielinski's HHerculem ... ionica quadam levitate contactum," or ]ebb's "une naivete qui peut nous faire sourire," are typical of this view. 3 It often has associ ated with it the opinion that the humor can only be accounted for by assuming a courtly reference to some marriage among Hieron's followers. The second interpretation is most clearly represented by Preuss: Hut Meleagri laudes augeret, fabulam immutavisse iure Bacchylides existimari potest."4 The change in point of view is conceded to be slightly Hromamic,"5 but is found to have the advan tage of focusing the attention more completely on Meleager. -

Based on a thorough examination of the evidence, it argues that the two poets pursue different strategies: whereas Bacchylides develops a poetic mythology of named Muses (particularly, Ourania), Pindar rede- ploys the single unnamed Muse of the earlier hexameter and choral traditions, envisioning her as the poet’s collaborator. Pindar may thus be seen to originate the notion of the Muse as a deity associated with poetic composition, as contrasted with her mnemonic-epistemic role in hexameter verse. Keywords: Archaic Greek lyric, epinikion, metapoetics, authorship, the Muses, Pindar. The epinikion is unique among Archaic Greek melic genres in that it is represented, for us, by two sizable contemporary corpora. In this regard, epinikion can be compared to Attic tragedy and the “Homeric” corpus of dactylic hexameter poetry; in the latter two cases, intensive comparative work has yielded profound insights into both the poetics of particular texts and, more generally, the evolution of the literary system in Ancient Greece. Much less work has been done on a contrastive poetics of epinikion.
