1 Route History & Background

Location Welsh/English Border, UK Length 94 miles (153 km) Operating Speed 55 – 90 mph Standard (1,435 mm) Current Operator Transport for Owner Builder /London & North Western Railway Focus Period 2016 - 2017

The line that exists today is the amalgamation of two lines, both with influence from the LNWR. The southern section from Newport to Hereford is formed from the Newport, and Hereford Railway, while the northern section from Hereford to Shrewsbury is formed from the joint GWR/LNWR Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway.

When the two railways arrived in the important of Hereford, the LNWR had already built Hereford Barton. The S&HR and the GWR agreed to build the Hereford Barrs Court, which was then also used by the 's Hereford, Hay and Railway. Under the 1960s Beeching Axe, many of the supporting branch lines were closed and the Hereford Barton loop closed. The remaining Hereford station was renamed Hereford Station and retains its Victorian Gothic architecture.

Today, operate all passenger services on the line. Typically, there is an hourly service from Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Central, , Milford Haven, calling at principal stations. A service every two hours from Holyhead to Cardiff also uses the Marches line from Shrewsbury southwards. Additionally, local stopping services operate between and Shrewsbury and services via the use the Marches line between Shrewsbury and .

In 1971 the line found itself in the spotlight after GWR King Class No. 6000 'King George V' became the first steam loco to run on the mainline, breaking the British Railways mainline steam ban that had been in place since the day after the Fifteen Guinea Special in 1968. The locomotive was restored and based the Bulmer's Railway Centre in Hereford, which soon became a hub of steam railtour activity. The route remains popular with steam & diesel railtours to this day, with it's steep gradients and beautiful landscapes.

4.2 General Controls Key Equivalent Action T Load/Unload passengers or freight. H Headlights. Repeatedly pressing will cycle through headlight states where appropriate. Z (Expert) Engine Stop/Start. By default engines will already be running at the start of a scenario. Press this button to stop and then again to restart the engine. Q (Expert) AWS. The AWS is a system used on some trains to ensure that the driver has seen a signal. If the AWS sounds (a black/yellow striped symbol is shown on the Driver's display), this must be acknowledged by pressing the AWS button or the emergency brakes will be applied. X (Expert) Sander. Causes sand to be laid on the rails next to the wheels to assist with adhesion. Press and hold to activate sander, let go to stop. L Cab Light. Toggle the Cab light on and off. I Instrument Light. Toggle the Instrument Light on and off. Space Horn. Sound the horn’s low tone. B Horn. Sound the horn’s high tone. / Handbrake. Toggle the train Handbrake on and off. Ctrl + Shift + C Couple manually.

4.3 Class 175 Systems DSD The Driver Safety Device or DSD is a vigilance system used to check the driver is present and aware when driving a locomotive. When activated and the player is travelling above 5mph an alarm will sound every sixty seconds. This must be acknowledged within five seconds or an emergency brake application will be applied.

To toggle the system, use the hotkey CTRL + D. To acknowledge the warning, press the hotkey Numpad Enter.

DRA The Driver Reminder Appliance or DRA is a safety system which when enabled prevents the driver applying power. This can be useful when stopping at red signals to remove any chance of applying power and moving past the signal without first disabling the DRA. After disabling DRA the throttle handle must be set back to the idle position before power can be reapplied.

Manual Door Control Manual Door Control is a system that lets players choose when they want to close the coach doors after picking up passengers. This is an optional system, the Class 175 will default to the standard passenger pickup method unless it is set to manual control.

© Copyright Bossman Games 2020, all rights reserved Release Version 2.0 Page 10 Train Simulator – Welsh Marches Line

To toggle the system, press the hotkey CTRL + SHIFT + T. When the passenger doors open they will now wait for player input before they close. Players are not able to depart with the doors open. To close the doors with manual control enabled first wait for the loading of passengers and then press CTRL + T.

Speed Set The Speed Set button when activated will not allow the Class 175 to exceed the current speed it is travelling. It will not manually apply power or braking to maintain the speed. It utilises the throttle handles current power output, so if the handle is in idle the train will lose traction and slow down. Similarly, when travelling downhill if the set speed is exceeded by the momentum of the train the system will not apply braking.

Updatable Destinations The Class 175 can change its destination board during a scenario. To cycle through the possible destinations, use the hotkey CTRL + SHIFT + 6 to cycle up and CTRL + SHIFT + 5 to cycle down. This will set the destination boards throughout the train.

7.2 Brake Levers Both the Train Air Brake and Loco Air Brake levers have three functional positions:  In the upright position they “Hold” the current brake pressure.  When pulled fully back they gradually “Release” the brakes.  When pushed fully forwards they gradually “Apply” the brakes.

The Train Brake lever is centre sprung both in the cab and on the game HUD while the Loco Brake Lever is only sprung forwards for brake application and can be left resting in the “Release” position when required.

When using the Train Brake lever a target brake pressure can be selected as indicated by the outer needle on the Brake Pipe Pressure Gauge. The actual brake pressure will then gradually change to match the selected target as shown by the larger inner needle.

The rate that the brake pressure changes is dictated by the brake timing selection (“Passenger” or “Goods”) as selected and indicated on the main console (item 13 shown on the previous page). When in “Goods” brake timing mode the brake pressure changes more slowly.

8.2 Headlights The head and tail light states on this loco can be cycled through using the H / Shift+H controls on the keyboard and the light controls on the F4 HUD.

Also, the individual lights can be controlled independently with their individual controls.

8.3 DSD (Driver Safety Device) This loco is fitted with DSD. The pedal is automatically depressed when the player moves the Reverser into forward or reverse. If the loco is travelling above 6mph and the reverser is moved into Engine Only or Off, the pedal will be lifted and a 7 second timer will commence, resulting in an Emergency Brake application. This can be overridden by pressing the DSD Holdover Switch. An Emergency Brake application caused by the DSD will be reset once the train comes to a stand, or once the pedal is depressed again.

8.4 AWS (Automatic Warning System) This loco is fitted with AWS. Upon entering the cab, the AWS system is already set up. When changing ends there will be an AWS self-test. Emergency Brake applications caused by the AWS will take 1 minute to reset.

8.5 Change-End Procedure To change ends in this loco you must follow the change-end procedure. Pressing Ctrl+7 will give you a walk-through of how to shut down the cab you are in. Pressing Ctrl+8 will give you a walk-though of how to start up the cab you move in to. The C key on the keyboard will take out the Master Key and drop the AWS Change End Lever.

8.6 Faults/Overload Reset The fault trip on the loco can be detected with an illuminated Alarm light on the main cab desk. This can be caused by one of two things:

 An amp overload of over 8000 amps.  Putting the reverser into the opposite direction of travel whilst in motion.

To reset the fault the Power Handle must be placed in the off position and the Overload Reset button must be depressed until the Alarm light is no longer illuminated.

8.7 Wheelslip & Anti-Slip Brake Wheelslip causes the load regulator to automatically run back (reduces power) until it is corrected, but its still better and quicker to reduce power manually. The Anti- Slip Brake applies a slight loco brake application in an "attempt" to reduce wheelslip but they aren't always effective.

8.8 Traction Interlock This loco has a traction interlock which cuts power if brake pipe pressure goes below 45psi and only reopens above 60psi.

© Copyright Bossman Games 2020, all rights reserved Release Version 2.0 Page 20 Train Simulator – Welsh Marches Line

8.9 ETH (Electric Train Heating) ETH supplies the coaches with electricity to power heating and lighting. When it is activated will cause the engine to go into a high idle. The ETH load varies with train length and the ETH load does affect traction performance. When light engine the ETH will be automatically cut (no continuous circuit). The Train Heat On light will illuminate when ETH is in operation. This light can be dimmed with the ETH Light Dimmer Switch.

8.10 Wiper Controls The wiper controls have 3 positions: Stop (halts wiper where it is and allows manual wiping; Run (wiper runs); Park (wiper moves to its park position).

8.11 Headboards This loco has a small selection of headboards that can be cycled through using Ctrl+H / Ctrl+Shift+H. The headboards included are:

 The Cathedrals Express  Cumbrian Mountain Express  Coast Express  Welsh Marches Express
