Bennett) This project – the first in-depth analysis of clerical concubinage in medieval England – examines cultural perceptions of clerical sexual misbehavior as well as the lived experiences of priests, concubines, and their children. Although much has been written on the imposition of priestly celibacy during the Gregorian Reform and on its rejection during the Reformation, the history of clerical concubinage between these two watersheds has remained largely unstudied. My analysis is based primarily on archival records from Hereford, a diocese in the West Midlands that incorporated both English- and Welsh-speaking parishes and combines the quantitative analysis of documentary evidence with a close reading of pastoral and popular literature. Drawing on an episcopal visitation from 1397, the act books of the consistory court, and bishops’ registers, I argue that clerical concubinage occurred as frequently in England as elsewhere in late medieval Europe and that priests and their concubines were, to some extent, socially and culturally accepted in late medieval England. -

Dallow SWB Commemorated on Celynen Collieries Roll of Honour Family James David Dallow was born in 1895, the son of Charles and Margaret Dallow. The 1901 Census show six year old James to be the second of four children - Annie E Dallow (7) was born a year before him and he had younger siblings William C Dallow (4) and Mary S M Dallow (2). Charles was originally from Hereford and Margaret from Crickhowell, all the children were born in Abercarn. In 1911 the family were living at 42 Celynen Terrace in Newbridge. Charles and his two sons were all working as coal hewers in a local colliery whilst Mary was still at school. The family appear to have had a further son, Thomas, although the Census shows him as having died. The family had a lodger called John Knight who also worked at the colliery but was a boiler stoker working above ground. Military James David Dallow enlisted in the army and was posted as Private 23247 to the 11th Battalion of the South Wales Borderers, part of the 115th Brigade of the 38th (Welsh) Division. In December 1915 the 38th (Welsh) Division embarked for France, the 11th Battalion arriving at Le Havre on 4th December 1915. The following is an extract from a factsheet issued by the South Wales Borderers Museum, Brecon After spells in the Line at Givenchy in the spring of 1916 the Division moved to the River Ancre on 3rd July at the opening of the Battle of the Somme, and both battalions had their first real action in the attack on Mametz Wood. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract Since Eason’s (1957) paper on centipedes from Carnarvonshire there has been an accumulation of centipede records from various parts of Wales but relatively few are from upland areas. Recent records from Snowdonia included several species, including Lithobius (Monotarsobius) curtipes, from locations up to around 1,000m. We present a review of centipedes recorded from the 13 Welsh vice-counties which includes 41 species, 4 of which are from buildings or heated greenhouses, 4 apparently obligate halophiles from coastal sites and one doubtful. Wales has a variety of types of habitat including both lowland and montane rural areas and urban/industrial/post-industrial locations which no doubt contributes to the diversity of its chilopod fauna. Introduction The centipede Lithobius curtipes is not known in Britain from large numbers of past records, indeed in his Cotteswold paper of 1953, E.H. Eason (Eason, 1953) had referred to his record from Kildanes Scrubs, Gloucestershire in 1952 as only the third British record. The finding of it by RG at around 1,000m in Snowdonia, along with Lithobius variegatus and Strigamia acuminata at similar heights, prompted us to look at the occurrence of upland centipedes in North Wales and in Wales in general and to review the species recorded from the principality. -

Bharadwaj Article History Received: 01.11.2019 Accepted: 10.11.2019 Published: 20.11.2019 Abstract: Dylan Thomas‘s poem ―A Refusal to Mourn the Death, by Fire, of a Child in London‖ focuses on the problem of the allotted role of the war time poet involved in choice-making. The agonizing tension, the climate of the global war and the creative fear and anxieties continue to harass the poets of the thirties and the war poets of the forties. One may readily agree with the view that in stylistic maturity the poem surpasses anything Thomas has written before, and it is also true that, at the formal level, the early poem 18 Poems sets the pattern for this later poem. Literary critics interpret the poem within the perspective of death and religion. However the poem, dramatizing the socio-politico-historical functioning of the war poets of the forties and the more ironic complex attitude of Auden and the pitiless attitude of the lost poets of the thirties, brings out the inadequacy of the poet‘s power of comprehension and the pain inherent in human perception.
