2019 : what a year of growth and great achievements it has been for Fondation Jeunes en Tête! Once again, our entire team and board of directors rallied together to carry out our mission of preventing psychological distress in young people aged 11 to 18 in Quebec.

We would like to highlight in particular the launch of our new Mental Health Basics workshop, which targets young people in the first and second years of secondary school. This workshop offers young people the keys to good mental health and helps reduce the risk of developing anxiety or depression. We hope that these concepts, essential to their development, will guide them harmoniously throughout their adolescence.

Also, the fall saw the publication of our Portrait of Youth Well-Being, in collaboration with the Institut national de recherche scientifique. This study enabled us to identify major trends in young Quebecers’ physical and mental health for every region of the province. You will find the highlights later in this report.

However, young people still need their loved ones and services to navigate their journey to adulthood. This is why we are so grateful for the support we receive from our faithful donors year after year. We also want to thank the ever-increasing number of people who develop fundraisers to allow us to continue our activities.

Enjoy the report!

5 Our mission Our mission at Fondation Jeunes en Tête is to prevent psychological distress among youth aged 11 to 18 in Quebec.

We accomplish this mission by reaching out to teenagers in schools through our Partners for Life program, and by supporting recognized community organizations that complement our work.

We also create a synergy among all youth advocates and stakeholders in order to maximize our joint impact on young people.

Why act to prevent psychological distress among young people? Psychological distress is at the core of most issues faced by adolescents. Mental health issues, bullying, substance abuse, and dropping out of school are just a few examples.

Why choose the Foundation?

We have developed an expertise and knowledge of the problems experienced by young people, so your donations are always invested to yield the best possible impact.

By investing in the prevention of adolescent distress, it is possible to save almost 25% in public services per person over the course of their lives, as we would then avoid dramatic consequences requiring rehabilitation.

Fondation Jeunes en Tête is also a catalyst for helping youth. How? Through research, the sharing of best practices, and the creation of a better synergy between organizations throughout Quebec.

Making a donation to prevent psychological distress among adolescents is to contribute directly to the future of our society.

77 Highlights

Once again in 2019, psychological distress was a topic that received a lot of coverage in Quebec, and that’s just as well! We applaud the will of the provincial government to shed light on the issues surrounding mental health treatments and prevention, and to elevate its place within the health system generally.

We specialize in prevention for young people and those around them, but we know that the only way to sustainably improve the situation is by bringing together all mental health stakeholders in order to facilitate education and access to care. This is why we are developing partnerships with organizations, other foundations and government bodies to maximize our impact on young people.

In the following pages, you will find information about the resources we have implemented to move in this direction.

Forum Jeunes et santé mentale

On May 13, 2019, we participated in the Forum Jeunes et santé mentale organized by the Government of Quebec. This day of consultation, bringing together dozens of stakeholders from the sector, allowed us to identify the major challenges that our health system needs to overcome to better help young people.

Government recommendations should be published in 2020 or 2021.

Danielle McCann and Lionel Carmant durring the Forum 8 National Suicide Prevention Strategy: Highlights Victory! For 40 years, the suicide rate in Quebec has been 3 people per day. And yet, no strategy exists to bring this number down, despite the recommendation of the World Health Organization.

So in 2019, the Foundation joined a coalition of 35 stakeholders, led by the Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS), calling for the establishment of a National Suicide Prevention Strategy in 2019.

We have been delighted by the speedy response of the provincial government, which has announced its intention to develop such a strategy.

AQPS Méritas Award for Organization of the Year

The Foundation is honoured to have been recognized by the Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS) for our key role in this area. With our Together for Mental Health workshop, which demystifies depression in young people in schools and directs them toward appropriate resources, the Foundation actively contributes to the prevention of suicide in teenagers.

Sommet LA TÊTE HAUTE

On Wednesday, February 27, in collaboration with the AQRP (Association québécoise pour la réadaptation psychosociale), we launched the HEADSTRONG Summit!

This unique initiative created by the Mental Health Commission of Canada aims to fight the stigma of mental health by bringing together young people from various high schools.

Over 60 young people and staff members from 9 different schools came to the event to hear the stories of hope and recovery from people who have lived with mental illness*, participating in activities to break down stigmas and to develop action plans to be used in schools.

Thank you to the four speakers who were with us for this event: Carolane Stratis, Kharoll-ann Souffrant, Janie Dolan Cake and Victor Payette.

9 An Enlightening Study, Unprecedented in Quebec In collaboration with the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and the Observatoire Jeunes et Société, Fondation Jeunes en Tête was pleased to present in 2019 our Portrait of Youth Well-Being, a project guided by our desire to understand the true situation of teenagers in Quebec. We are extremely proud of this portrait, the result of several years of rigorous hard work.

Reducing the Number of Youths in Distress

By joining forces and combining our prevention, awareness and access-to-care activities, we will be able to significantly reduce the number of young people affected by psychological dis-tress, a factor central to most issues faced by teenagers and one that has a big impact on their well-being.

For the first time, the 11–17 age group in every region of Quebec was studied with respect to six dimensions to paint a realistic and complete picture of their well-being.

12 Partners for Life: Always a Success!

Once again this year, our Partners for Life workshop, appreciated by secondary schools for more than 20 years, allowed us to raise awareness among many young people aged 14 to 18 (Grades 9 through 11), as well as their parents and teachers, about teen depression.

14 What our contribution means for our partners

Many young people are struggling with significant challenges, obstacles to achieving their full potential. These young people already have dreams and ambitions, but their concerns sometimes cause them to forget them and the fact that they have all the potential needed to achieve them. Mental health disorders, including anxiety, which is omnipresent, are unfortunately not ‘fake news.’ It’s beyond appalling. However, if there is good news, it is that we are informed and that all of us, including you, the members of Fondation Jeunes en Tête, are doing our utmost to give our young people the tools to overcome these obstacles..

Guylaine Saint-Pierre, Executive Director, Carrefour jeunesse-emploi Chauveau

Prix Inspiration

In addition to financial contributions, Fondation Jeunes en Tête also believes that supporting organizations requires recognizing their outstanding work. This is why we created the Prix Inspiration more than 7 years ago.

This award recognizes an organization funded by the foundation that stands out as much for its excellent management, entrepreneurial spirit and innovative projects as for its impact on the lives of troubled youth. In 2019, and for the Quebec / Eastern Quebec region, Le Carrefour Jeunesse-emploi Chauveau was awarded this honour as well as a $5,000 grant.

For more than 20 years, Carrefour jeunesse-emploi Chauveau (CJEC) has been supporting young adults aged 16 to 35 in their journey toward personal and social self-sufficiency by helping them stay in school, find paths to employment or develop entrepreneurial or volunteer projects.

Thanks to this initiative, every year, some 1,000 young people manage to achieve personal and professional fulfillment and find their way through young adulthood. Fondation Jeunes en Tête fully supports this approach, which actively contributes to improving our young people’s well-being.

Thank you to the jury! Fondation Jeunes en Tête also highlighted the excellent work of the Prix Inspiration finalists by Jean-Paul Gagné, awarding them a $1,000 grant. president of the jury, Édith Boulianne, Bruno Dery, Congratulations to these two exemplary organizations: Lise Lapierre (Lapierre, Finances & Gouvernance) et André Marceau - Le Sillon (Chaudière-Appalaches) (La Dauphine) - Pilier Jeunesse (Capitale-Nationale)

15 Fundraising Activities

At the end of a year filled with growth, the finance team is happy to announce a 4.5% revenue increase in philanthropic activities.

Thanks to the active participation of the business community, fundraisers saw an almost 12% increase compared to last year.

We were incredibly fortunate to be able to count on the support of generous funding partners to make our corporate campaign a true success by collecting $2,315,000 (in commitments) since the beginning of our campaign and for the years to come. In 2019 alone, a total of $ 385,000 in corporate donation was recorded.

It’s the invaluable support from companies, our loyal donors, new friends of the Fondation and caring people of all ages who allow us to carry out our mission for the well-being of Quebec teens.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to them.

As you read the next few pages, you will see how much wind we have in our sails and how the support of all of these patrons, foundations and companies can help these young people living with mental health issues look to the future with hope!

16 Corporate Campaign and Major Donations

In 2019, around ten companies associated their brand with the Fondation’s mission, which allowed us to be greatly successful in our corporate revenue goals.

Cadillac Fairview, the J. Armand Bombardier Foundation, the Medavie Foundation and the Simple Plan Foundation have pursued their collaboration with the Fondation, contributing to its longevity and the implementation of initiatives to effectively deploy our actions with teens. The invaluable collaborations with these partners and with new funding partners such as BMO, Desjardins, the Chamandy Foundation, Metro and RBC allow us to achieve significant results, notably in relation to reputation, outreach and positioning.

This year, we also want to emphasize the significant contribution of the Libermont Foundation and to thank the Monty family, which has shown exceptional confidence and commitment to the cause through their very generous contribution to the Fondation. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

We particularly want to thank our donors, who have made a big difference and who will help us ensure the pursuit of our mission!

17 AMAZONIA - Valentine’s Day Ball

The 16th Valentine’s Day Ball was held on February 14, 2019, at Windsor Station in Montréal. Its 600 guests were enthralled by the cozy, exotic atmosphere inspired by the Amazonian rainforest.

This Ball brought in net proceeds of $585,000 thanks to our generous donors ($115,000 alone thanks to our silent auction) and the support of our two honorary co-chairs: Ms. Danielle Lavoie (Cadillac Fairview) and Mr. Laurent Ferreira (National Bank).

From this evening, we will remember the incredible tropical decor dreamed up by Cava Rose, as well as a gourmet meal with exotic accents prepared by Tuck Shop, the partnership between François Gadbois and Mélanie Boucher (our executive director), without forgetting the thrilling musical performances by DJ Kleancut and the Dirty Players!

For the occasion, young Mia and her father Jean-Nicolas Verreault delivered a touching speech on teen anxiety (available on our YouTube channel).

Their heartfelt sharing led to an incredible feeling of solidarity in the room, as over $80,000 was raised during our philanthropic auction (a call for spontaneous donations dedicated to developing our new workshop).

23 Bal des lumières - United for mental health

Organized together by three of the largest mental health foundations in Quebec, and with the help of evenko, the third edition of Bal des lumières – United for Mental Health took place on September 18th at the Bell Centre.

Under the theme of "Human Nature" the event raised $1,825,000 net to benefit the Douglas Mental Health University Institute Foundation, the Fondation de l’Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal and the Fondation Jeunes en Tête.

This achievement would not have been possible without the united efforts of our generous co-chairs: George Cope (Bell), Robert Dumas (Sun Life Québec), Serge Godin (CGI), Geoff Molson (Groupe CH) and Louis Vachon (National Bank).

Over 700 guests attended the evening, including Québec Premier François Legault, Minister of Health and Social Services Danielle McCann and Montréal Mayor Valérie Plante.Tous ont d’ailleurs rappelé l’importance de mettre en lumière la cause de la santé mentale. All recalled the importance of highlighting the cause of mental health.

24 Hosted by Maripier Morin and organized by Joël Legendre, this philanthropic event provided many memorable moments, such as a touching speech by Mia, a 14-year-old teen struggling with an anxiety disorder.

Her story produced a remarkable wave of support: $176,250 was raised thanks to a spontaneous donation appeal.

The emotional evening was also enlivened by pianist Alexandra Streliski, who was accompanied by talented dancers, as well as the electrifying performance from piano man Christian Marc Gendron.

For the occasion, the president of the Board of Directors, Éric Bujold, wore a jacket in the colours of the cause!

Created by designer Nathon Kong based on a drawing by Léane, a high schooler from the École Secondaire Paul-Arseneau, this jacket reminds us that a picture is worth a thousand words!

25 An Engaged Community

Each year, we can count on the support of people who wish to make the world a better place and who choose to give their time and money to our cause: the prevention of psychological distress among Quebec youth. We want to express enormous thanks to each of those people!

Let’s Bond

For the past several years, we have been lucky to count on the support of Let’s Bond, a Montreal collective of dedicated and dynamic young professionals whose mission is to raise funds to break taboos surrounding mental illness.

In August, the Let’s Bond collective organized a VIP shopping night at Holt Renfrew Ogilvy entitled “In Style with Holt.” 400 guests attended this prestigious event and 10% of the evening’s sales went to Fondation Jeunes en Tête.

The 9th famous Urban Ball organized by the Let’s Bond collective was held under the theme “Taj Lake Palace,” inspired by the James Bond film Octopussy. It took place on October 18, 2019, at the spectacular Salon 1861. Immersed in decor inspired by Indian culture, guests enjoyed a festive ambiance and even tried a few baladi dance routines.

$485,000 was raised over the course of this two events and was shared between the Douglas Foundation and Fondation Jeunes en Tête.

26 A Big Step for Rebecca

In February 2019, after several months of raising awareness for the importance of preventing psychological distress in teens, Jean Mongeau climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in memory of his daughter Rebecca.

His goal was to raise $58,950 ($10 for each metre climbed) to support the development of our new workshop meant for students in grades 7 and 8 (Secondaire I and II).

This goal was greatly exceeded, as over $80,000 was raised over the course of this touching memorial project!

Défi Challenge Québec 800

The Défi Challenge Québec 800 Adrien Gagnon was an opportunity for 8-runner teams to push their limits by running an 800km relay race over 4 days.

Sympathetic to the cause of mental health, the teams made this 4th Challenge a big success, raising $60,000 in May 2019!

NB Grand Tour In July 2019, more than 300 employees and volunteers from the National Bank participated in the 9th NB Grand Tour, which took place in the Portneuf and Quebec City West region.

This sporting challenge was a remarkable success and raised $175,000 to support Fondation Jeunes en Tête as well as 11 organizations from the Portneuf and Quebec City West region.

27 School Projects

Our presence in schools can make students want to contribute to our cause. In 2019, several fundraising activities flourished in schools:

The sale of stuffed animals crocheted by teen Ainhoa Larralde Castillo (École secondaire Rive- Nord)—for a gentle recovery.

Comforting scarves knitted by Sara Villeneuve (École secondaire d’Oka) as part of her project Cœur-O-Chaud that launched before the beginning of winter.

The Vivre avec un trouble anxieux conference organized by Émilie Rose (École secondaire Rive- Nord), which brought together 70 people around our cause.

The Musique en Tête show which brought many emerging artists together for an evening organized by student Marianna Sepulveda (École d’éducation internationale de McMasterville).

School staff also aren’t afraid to get involved! In May, two teachers (Annabelle Bouchard and Danaëlle Levesque-Rock) from the École Secondaire Ozias-Leduc helped run a cookie sale and educated students on mental health.

For the third year in a row, the Collège Mont-Saint-Louis has also shown us their support by organizing not one, but two activities:

J’ai ma santé en tête day, aimed at educating students on the importance of good physical and mental health with different sporting events.

The school’s open house day, during which every visitor was invited to make a $2 donation to the Fondation.

We would like to thank Ms. Dominique Delhaes, Director of Student Life and Corporate Affairs for the Fondation du Collège, for these good ideas and for her faithful collaboration.

28 Artistic Projects

Various kindhearted artists have also contributed to our cause with:

A comedy night, organized in the spring by Kelly Letendre at the Cégep Sorel-Tracy, with the participation of Sam Lemieux and Alex Bisaillon.

The launch party for the illustrated magazine The Sad People Club Zine, organized by Élisabeth Martel and her team.

A private exhibition of Joany Bissonnette’s art, organized on September 22 at the La Piazzetta restaurant on St-Denis—an evening for which the pizzeria designed a generous special menu (15% off canvas sales + $10 for each special meal sold).

The Musique de la Hongrie concert, organized by Mr. Julius Frohlich at the Saint- James United Church on October 5—the chance to contribute to many organizations’ missions to help young people while admiring the achievements of soprano Melissa McCann and talented violinist Istvàn Lakatos and pianist Paul Digout.

A variety of entertaining events that helped support the cause!

Corporate Partnerships

Year after year, many companies also show us that we can count on their support. For some time now, the Car for life program set up by ARPAC (Association of Auto Parts Recyclers in Quebec) has been supporting our cause with the help of their donors. The plan is simple: those who want to get rid of their old cars can donate them to Car for life, which will donate 100% of the estimated cash value to foundations chosen by the donors!

And it doesn’t stop there. In 2018 and 2019, the Opto-Réseau eyewear store (Brossard) chose to donate $5 to the Fondation for each frame sold! During those two years, a partnership with the PSB Boisjoli accounting firm was also established: various activities regularly organized by the employees have raised money for our cause.

We would like to thank Audrey Rousseau Dufresne (Opto-Réseau) and Julie Thériault (PSB Boisjoli) for the wonderful relationship we developed through these partnerships. 29 Sports Challenges

Because mental and physical health are two closely related concepts, many sports fans have also contributed to our mission through various initiatives:

The Roule-dons challenge, an initiative created by three students who hope to raise awareness about our mission in their networks while pushing their limits: in two days, these bicycle enthusiasts made the 370 km journey from Kingston to Laval! We also wish to thank Cédrick Côté and his partners for this great initiative.

Rowing 10 km a day for 30 days, a challenge initiated by Gabriel Gauthier, during which rowers of all levels took turns to row 300 km to the Deka Gym in Blainville in June.

Spinning classes where the registration fees were donated to the Fondation during the month of July. We would like to thank the lovely Val, the trainer behind this initiative, and Casey, the manager of the Le Spin MTL studio.

A hike to Mont Tremblant organized in August by two kinesiologists who are very committed to mental health (Xavier-Alexandre Rioux and Olivier Perron from Centre Kinetic);

A softball tournament organized by Ms. France Gaudette with help from the Les Montarvilloises team. The participation fees were donated to the Fondation, and the tournament ended with a joyful end-of-season party on September 21, during which other donations were collected.

Vanessa Beaulieu, author of the book Mes tempêtes, climbed Mount Everest, a challenge associated with a fundraiser that raised over $9,000.

Each of these challenges was more inspiring than the last, and they remind us of the importance of perseverance!

30 Other Themed Activities Every third-party event is the Three other events were also organized on result of many hours of thought, various themes: planning and implementation.

Jeans days at the Days Inn Hotel in Berthierville For this, and on behalf of the from January 1 to March 30. We wish to thank young people who will receive free Anike Bélanger for this event, as she suggested mental health prevention workshops, to the hotel employees the idea of wearing their the Fondation Jeunes en Tête team favourite jeans in exchange for a donation. wishes to send a warm thank you to all their partners! Such great ideas to combine business with pleasure!

31 Deeply committed to the well-being of Quebec adolescents, the Foundation’s team is enriched every day by the expertise and professionalism of the members of our Board of Directors, all from the business world or the mental health field.
