2014 Reach Report Title 4.5 million athletes 2014 Reach 94,339 competitions – 258 every day Report across 170 countries 2014 Reach Report Introduction Welcome to the 2014 Reach Report on the development and growth of Special Olympics. This report is based on annual Census data collected by thousands of staff and volunteers all over the world who undertake this substantial task every year. Without their efforts it simply would not be possible to put together this important and valuable snapshot of the Special Olympics movement. The Report provides a summary of key programmatic results that were achieved during the course of 2014. By collecting data from all of our Programs across the globe, we are able to see where we are making progress against our 5-year Strategic Plan and also understand where we need to focus more effort if we are to achieve our strategic goals. Data for the 2014 Reach Report were collected from 221 Special Olympics National/State Programs in 170 countries. The Report is organized to follow the key pillars of our 2011 – 2015 Strategic Plan: Advance Quality Sports and Competitions, Build Communities, Connect Fans and Funds, Develop Movement Leadership and Establish Sustainable Capabilities. Advance Quality Sports and Competitions The Movement’s Reach: Athlete Growth Data 2009-2014 • Africa had the highest growth rate of any Special Olympics Regions for the third consecutive year. • Two Regions reported lower athlete numbers: the drop in Europe-Eurasia was due to more accurate reporting1, while the fall in MENA was mainly due to the fact that there were five fewer Programs accredited in 2014 due to the challenging environment in the Region. In relation to ethics, such research has been primarily focused on how ethics effects all aspects of athletics. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine if factors that cause coaches to victimize athletes are related to a lack of ethical understanding.

  • The Impact of Designated Players in Major League Soccer
Superstar Salaries and Soccer Success: The Impact of Designated Players in Major League Soccer Dennis Coates Department of Economics University of Maryland, Baltimore County Bernd Frick Department of Management University of Paderborn Todd Jewell Department of Economics University of North Texas December 2012 Abstract This study estimates the relationship between production and salary structure in Major League Soccer (MLS), the highest level of professional soccer (association football) in North America. Soccer production, measured as league-points-per- game, is modeled as a function of a team’s total wage bill, the distribution of the team’s wage bill, and goals per game. Both the gini coefficient and the coefficient of variation are utilized to measure salary inequality. The results indicate that production in MLS is negatively responsive to increases in the salary inequality; this effect is consistently significant when using the coefficient of variation to measure dispersion. 1 I. Introduction Economic theory indicates that the distribution of salaries can affect the productivity of workers and firms. In the theory of tournaments, Lazear and Rosen (1981) discuss the possibility that greater salary inequality can lead to more worker effort and increased productivity. However, cohesion theory (Levine, 1991) implies firms may be able to increase the productivity of workers by equalizing salaries, since a more equal salary distribution will increase unity within the firm. The implication is that firms with more equal salary distributions will be more productive than similar firms with less equal salary structures. The present study attempts to shed light on the question of the connection between salary structure and productivity using professional sports data.
