Packing for the Journey

E– mail Father Ralph: [email protected]

Sommer in the Summer I do pretty well following a lot of the gospel in my life, but the instructions Jesus Each year I like to spend gives his disciples in today’s gospel (Mark 6:7-13) are ones I’ve not been able to part of the summer time live out. And if you see my car today as I head out for a couple of weeks of visiting parishioners. Would vacation, you’ll know what I mean. you like to host an informal gathering at your home? Invite other parishioners and “Take nothing for the journey but a walking stick—no food, no sack, no neighbors and have dessert in their belts...wear sandals but not a second tunic.” I’m afraid that my car is fully and I’ll be happy to share packed -- as it often is when I’m travelling. I understand why Jesus tells his some time and conversation disciples to travel light. If they enter a town laden with luggage, the locals will about whatever interests you expect that they’re moving in. But in this particular mission, Jesus wants them these days. moving on, not moving in, as they proclaim the coming of God’s kingdom. You can see a calendar of available dates for when I’m His instructions to not bring food or money will have them relying on the and sign hospitality of strangers. I don’t think that would work on Long Island. Other up online at: cultures are more open to welcoming visitors they don’t know. I actually www.stbernardchurch.org/ experienced that once when I was walking the hills on a Greek island. As we sommertime were headed back to our ship, we walked through a neighborhood and the people This is a nice chance for me who lived there beckoned to us to stop at their homes to have a bite to eat. They to get to meet more saw we were tourists. They didn’t speak English (and whatever language they parishioners in person and were speaking....well it was Greek to me....) We had no expectation that anyone discover what’s on their was going to invite us to visit. Yet, they wanted to welcome us. So Jesus’ minds. And to have dessert. expectation that his disciples would be fed and cared for wasn’t that far fetched in that culture. Other Visits The priests of the parish are is prohibition against wearing a “second tunic” intrigues me. It’s hot in the happy to stop by during any H summer celebrations. So if Middle East. One tunic was certainly enough, so who would wear two? But as is you’re having a block party, often the case, there is symbolism embedded in bible stories. The tunic was the party, going-off- outer garment -- it made the first impression when people met each other. In to-school party or a simple some cases you could tell the occupation of the person by what tunic was worn. BBQ, let us know and we’d Today we also can claim an identity in what we wear -- at work some wear suits; be glad to spend some time some wear uniforms. When we’re headed to the beach, our clothes let others out amidst the “flock”. know that. Likewise when we dress for church. So I suspect Jesus wants his disciples to have one identity, not two. They are representing him in a singlehearted way. So let that be so with us: whatever “tunic” we wear these days, may it remind others of Jesus.

Alpha is coming!

Noticing a lot of gray hair in Church?

Wouldn’t it be nice to see more of this?

You can be a part of making

that happen!

We will be inviting our young families to participate in ALPHA 8 Friday evenings this fall (Sept. 21– Nov. 16).

We will offer them FREE DINNER for the whole family, an ENGAGING MOVIE and DISCUSSION about life and faith for the adults (English and Spanish) and teens, and CHILD CARE for the little ones.

If you’re an adult or teen who loves kids and would like to help with child care so young parents can take advantage of this program (and you’re not participating in Alpha yourself), your presence as a child helper may make it possible for our younger parishioners to take that next step in faith.

What’s Alpha? For information and pre-registration, or to volunteer, go to www.stbernardchurch.org/alpha

LITURGICAL MINISTERS CORNER Spotlight on E.M.H.C.’s

30 years ago, I was asked “would I become a Eucharistic minister,” by Helene Lacey, our sacristan at the time. I felt so blessed to be asked. This is the most important part of the mass. As an EM, I would be serving the body and blood of Christ to my fellow parishioners. I remember feeling so nervous the day I attended my EM instructions. They were held at holy Trinity high school, and were led by Father William Hanson, Thank God. Father Hansen had been a priest at St. Bernard’s years before and his presence helped me feel more comfortable. But, “would I be able to show the proper reverence?” Our instructions instilled in us the correct way to serve both the body and the blood. I must confess I try not to think about… Dropping the host (his body), or spilling the wine (his blood). I still approach the ministry with a tinge of that first day’s nervousness. Each time I am scheduled to be an EM, I am blessed to be a part of the sacramental ceremony, and I hope all I serve can feel the love and respect I have in my role. Water Color Art Show

Selected watercolor paintings by Father Augustine are being displayed in the Prayer Room of St. Bernard’s Church, Levittown, from July 15-29 for viewing and acquisition through silent auction. This silent auction will end on July 29 before the 5.30 mass (Sunday).

The proceeds of the sale of paintings go to help the ministry of the Little Sisters of the Poor for the aged and the destitute.

The Little Sisters of the Poor provide service to the poorest of the poor in all the impoverished areas of the world. They pick up the homeless and destitute from the streets and offer them quality dedicated service absolutely free. It is their charism to live by the providence of God without receiving big donations but sustain their ministry by begging day by day. This art show is only a little effort to afford them small help to support their mission. By buying one of these paintings you are adding your tiny mite to the great work of God for the poor that Pope Francis has been consistently promoting the faithful to do.

All the pictures are matted and framed and are ready to decorate your homes or to be presented as gifts.

This will be a Silent Auction and here is the procedure:

1. Please choose the painting that you are interested in and note the number.

2. From the plastic box pick the card that bears that number.

3. Write your name, phone number, and your offering for the painting.

4. The highest bidder gets the picture.

5. The last date for the auction will be July 29.

Thanks to the Peck Family for donating the picture frames.

Thank You from Fr. Jerry

Dear Friends,

Although I have been away from St. Bernard’s for the past 5 years, it was a joy to be with you again for the 5:00 P.M Saturday evening Mass last weekend marking my retirement from full-time ministry. Seeing so many familiar faces reminded me of the 12 years I spent pastoring the people of St. Bernard’s and how much you have contributed to my priestly ministry by your faith, hope, and love. I am grateful to Fr. Ralph for the invitation to celebrate this Mass and to join him and Fr. Joe, Fr. Augustine, and Deacon Jim at the altar. I wish to thank you for your good wishes, your cards, and your gifts. Thanks also to Jane Nieman and her committee for making all the arrangements.

A number of people have asked me what I will be doing in retirement. I hope to devote some time to the St. Vincent de Paul Society on the diocesan level as their spiritual advisor. I will also be celebrating Sunday Mass at St. Elizabeth Parish in Melville starting in September. Of course I look forward to more time for prayer and study as well as time for relaxation and keeping up with social relationships. I am sure the Lord has a few things in mind as well which will be forthcoming. I will be residing in a private residence on the north fork of Long Island in the hamlet of Laurel. My address is:

1367 Aldrich Lane Laurel, New York 11948

St. Bernard’s will always be near to my heart, and I will always be grateful for the privilege of serving the good people of this parish.

Fr. Jerry Ringenback
