PHONE #:______4 JULY 3, 2016 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 14TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Dear St. John the Beloved Families, While I have had the opportunity to meet many of you at daily Mass, I felt it would be appropriate to introduce myself briefly to those whom I have not had the chance to meet. You may have read a recent article about my journey to the priesthood in the Dialog. My journey to the Catholic Church has taken me down many exciting paths. After converting to the Church as a child, my faith journey has taken me to different countries, different states, and many assignments that caused me to rely on my faith. As a seminarian I was placed here at St. John the Beloved during one of my summer breaks. Little did I know that I would be back in this wonderful parish as a first year priest. St. John the Beloved Parish is like coming “home” for me. As the weeks progress during the summer and beyond, I’m hoping to get to know each and every one of you. Know that you are all in my prayers. Please keep me in your prayers as I continue on this exciting path where God has placed me. Prayerfully, Fr. Lance Martin

Thank you to everyone who participated in our first ever Summer Intensive. We celebrated everyday with formation, instruction and

community fellowship. Because of the hard work of our volunteers- catechists, aides, lunch monitors and so many others, we had a great week. We look forward to building upon this program next year. It is a true blessing for our community to continue to foster fellowship and discipleship with our youth and teens. Thank you again to everyone who participated and contributed to this inaugural year. It could not have happened with all who participated and contributed.

Please note that is closed during July as the school is cleaned and maintained for the new school year. If you need to speak with the office staff, please email Mrs. Ballintyn at [email protected] and you will receive an email reply as soon as possible. Registration material are located via the RE website. Please continue to provide the experience of Religious Education to your child. This time is formational and invaluable to our faith community as these young people are our Church today and need to learn and to embrace all that our Church calls us to be and to do for this world. Thank you!

Happy July 4th to you and your families! May God’s blessings continue to offer to our world protection, healing and grace.

Ministry Minute “ROOTED IN FAITH; GROWING DISCIPLES.”

Some say tomato--and some say tomahto--you know the old song. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that "we're having a baptism today," or maybe you say "we are having a ." The proper term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of "christening" in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting.

Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water, the person being baptized is being "Christ-ed." No matter what you call it, there's always water involved, and then an anointing with chrism-- fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ's presence--poured upon the brow as we say, "As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life."

So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you--even though you may be squirming or sleeping--are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to celebrate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more "Christ-ed." No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, the key is transformation of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ.

Youth Ministry Volunteers Needed

Youth Ministry is looking for parishioners who are interested in ministering to the teens of our parish.

You do not need to have any special education, just a desire to share your faith with 6th -12th graders.

All training will be done this summer and in September (date will be set once we have a team in place).

HOSPITALITY TEAM SEARCH We have around 3,200 families in our parish. Will you help find the next 3,200? The office of mission and ministry is creating a hospitality team. Email [email protected] for more information.

Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God’s presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. . Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ.

Therese has been practicing Centering Prayer for 28 years and teaching Centering Prayer for 25 years. Therese works for a Fortune 500 company and offers a unique perspective in living a contemplative life in 21st century America. Therese holds a Master of Arts degree in Theology, with a concentration in Spirituality, from Fordham University.

The retreat will begin with Check-in after 4 pm with dinner at 6 pm on Friday and end with lunch at 12:30p on Sunday.
