Edmundson The purpose of this study is to explore and define in as precise a manner as possible Joyce's motives for the inclusion of the ballad "Little Harry Hughes" in the "Ithaca" episode of Ulysses. This ballad, accompanied in the text of "Ithaca" by its musical notation, is a variant of No. 155 in Francis J. Child's compilation of British traditional bal­ lads. It tells the story, frequently encountered in tradi­ tional lore and found in numerous literary analogues, of a Christian child murdered by Jews for ritual or other reasons. The point at which Joyce places "Little Harry Hughes" in Ulysses, the circumstances of its occurrence within the developing action, and the content of the ballad legend itself are such as to indicate that definite structural and thematic relationships exist between the ballad and Ulysses in its entirety. Edmundson Five aspects of this relationship are considered basic and necessary to the understanding of Joyce's use of the ballad. The initial problem to be examined is that of the peculiarly abbreviated form of Joyce's variant, which may have been the result of a characteristic Irish evolution or of a deliberate alteration on Joyce's part. In either case, but especially if the latter is true, the form of the ballad has definite and highly significant thematic implications. The nature of Joyce's awareness of the traditional back­ ground and of the historical realities of the Sir Hugh legend type, involving as they do centuries of Christian-Jew ani­ mosity, persecution, and reprisals, is the subject of a second portion of the study. Evidence is reviewed which shows that Joyce was not only interested in the periodic outbreaks of the so-called "blood accusation" against the Jews, but that he was actually researching the phenomenon during the period in which he was working on "Ithaca." The musical component of "Little Harry Hughes," largely overlooked by critics in spite of its being quite emphati­ cally inserted by Joyce into the text, presents a further subject for inquiry. The tonal structure of the ballad music is identified as "mixolydian," a designation which applies to specific modal structures in both the Greek and medieval ecclesiastical musical systems. Edmundson thematically with the problem of completing the metaphorical circle of the octave. Modality in its musical sense is suggested as a factor in the complex concept of Stephen's "ineluctable modality" as it appears in the "Proteus" episode and elsewhere. The modality theme is taken a step further in the fourth part of the analysis, which deals in part with the cyclical or "modal" pattern of historical recurrence inherent in Giambattista Vico's "ideal universal" history. It is main­ tained that Vico, a dominant philosophical influence in Finnegans Wake, is, in a possibly more abstract but no less real manner, present in Ulysses. Vico's ideas regarding the origins of poetry and the special qualities of the creations of the first poets are also analyzed as elements contribut­ ing to Joyce's interest in the ballad genre. Finally, "Little Harry Hughes" is considered as part of a "Hugh Motif," general throughout Ulysses, in which is con­ tained most of the thematic substance of the book— the themes of sacrifice and resurrection, of the modes of the individual personality and of historical circularity, and of artistic creation as a function of a static, as opposted to a kinetic, perception of beauty. It is concluded that Joyce's version of "Sir Hugh, or The Jew's Daughter" has an identifiable function in Ulysses. Bloom and Stephen, if they are ever in any sense united as father and son in Ulysses, are so in the "Ithaca" episode and precisely at the place where Stephen sings the ballad. Equally as significant is the fact that fundamental constituents of Ulysses such as cyclic movement and the reconciliation of antithetical identities are restated in various ways in both text and music of the ballad.     Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 35.1 March 2009: 205-228 Exile, Cunning, Silence: Trajectory of Art of Exile from Joyce’s Ulysses to Beckett’s Trilogy Li-ling Tseng Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures National Taiwan University, Taiwan Abstract Toward the end of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Stephen proclaims his famous defensive formula for future (Irish) art: “silence, exile, and cunning” (247). Stephen’s resolution to exile himself from a forcible religious, nationalistic, and aesthetic identification initiated in Portrait is faithfully materialized by Stephen’s several attempts of literary creation in Ulysses. Forced to roam Dublin city on Bloomsday, the new hero Bloom is living his every moment in exile. Ulysses exemplifies Joyce’s (via Stephen’s) art of exile in featuring the two main male characters as ideologically exiled beings and in spelling out through their cunning characterization a (living and writing) style of exile. It is established that a father-son-like relationship exists between Joyce and Beckett. In spite of Beckett’s protest against critics’ comparing him to Joyce, the route of exile initiated by Stephen on Joyce’s behalf is decisively taken up again and developed thoroughly in Beckett’s major oeuvres, The Trilogy. While the act of exile involves more the physical distancing from the socio-political Dublin city setting as maneuvered by Stephen and Bloom in Ulysses, Beckett’s Trilogy carries out a thoroughgoing exile or abstraction from a specific geopolitical setting, be it a city (i.e. Dublin) or a country (i.e. Ireland). My paper aims at examining Beckett’s diverse interaction with and influence under this Stephen-Joyce legacy in each of his Trilogy stories, primarily focusing on how Stephen’s formula has been experimented to be de-politicized and re-politicized in Beckett’s three works.

He was particularly fascinated by the effect of stage directions, which he remediated from the play to different genres such as short stories and prose. This thesis investigates the way in which Joyce has been influenced by playwrights such as Bernard Shaw and Henrik Ibsen, and how they contributed in shaping Joyce in, and outside of, his writing. The curious use of stage directions written in the past tense will be explored in “The Boarding House” and “The Dead”.     Love Tokens in the Lai de l’Ombre Barry O’Neill Center for International Security and Cooperation Stanford University [email protected] UCLA Conference on Political Games in the Middle Ages March 2001 DRAFT ABSTRACT: The thirteenth century poem, Lai de l’Ombre, or “lay of the shadow,” tells of a knight stricken with lovesickness for a married lady whom he has seen but never met. He visits her to persuade her to accept him as her lover, or at least to take his ring as a token. She refutes all his reasons, but just when she seems to have won the argument, he uses the ring to make a surprising move, showing her his courtly skill and capturing her love. One question is why his move is so clever, but a broader one is why their dispute focuses on the ring. This paper presents a theory concerning the basis of love tokens such as rings, anniversary dinners or Valentine’s gifts. The basis of the theory is how one person’s emotion responds to the perception of a reciprocal emotion in another. One signficance of the theory is that it combines the strategic and emotional aspects of action. The poet, who identifies himself in the final lines as “Jehan Renart,” crafted a delicate story that combines ideas of courtly love dialogues with a full plot as in the Breton lays, and to a lesser extent seduction tricks of the fabliaux.

With this term, I would like to suggest that love is not only a prominent theme in Joyce, but a dominant concept within a philosophical and artistic trajectory, part and parcel of an artist’s progress as he experiments with the power of images and with modes of representation. My argument turns on three interconnected points: first, that early on in his career Joyce adopts a scholastic framework according to which love is the supreme philosophi- cal emotion and the source from which all other emotions proceed; sec- ond, that he puts this framework to the test by pitting the concept of love against a cluster of related passions, most notably desire, pity, and joy; and finally, that in exploring these passions, he grapples with the problem of reconciling a scholastic interpretation of love with a modernist approach to representation. Joyce originally adheres to the hierarchy of dramatic passions estab- lished by the scholastic tradition; but in the course of his artistic evolution he is led to question the sustainability of that hierarchy. We will see that this shift is best illustrated by a comparison between A Portrait of the Artist and Giacomo Joyce.

ABSTRACT This thesis considers the imbrications created by James Joyce in his writing with the work of John Milton, through allusions, references and verbal echoes. These imbrications are analysed in light of the concept of ‘presence’, based on theories of intertextuality variously proposed by John Shawcross, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, and Eelco Runia. My analysis also deploys Gumbrecht’s concept of stimmung in order to explain how Joyce incorporates a Miltonic ‘atmosphere’ that pervades and enriches his characters and plot. By using a chronological approach, I show the subtlety of Milton’s presence in Joyce’s writing and Joyce’s strategy of weaving it into the ‘fabric’ of his works, from slight verbal echoes in Joyce’s early collection of poems, Chamber Music, to a culminating mass of Miltonic references and allusions in the multilingual Finnegans Wake.

    A COLLECTION OF BALLADS INTRODUCTION When the learned first gave serious attention to popular ballads, from the time of Percy to that of Scott, they laboured under certain disabilities. The Comparative Method was scarcely understood, and was little practised. Editors were content to study the ballads of their own countryside, or, at most, of Great Britain. Teutonic and Northern parallels to our ballads were then adduced, as by Scott and Jamieson. It was later that the ballads of Europe, from the Faroes to Modern Greece, were compared with our own, with European Märchen, or children’s tales, and with the popular songs, dances, and traditions of classical and savage peoples. The results of this more recent comparison may be briefly stated. Poetry begins, as Aristotle says, in improvisation. Every man is his own poet, and, in moments of stronge motion, expresses himself in song. A typical example is the Song of Lamech in Genesis— “I have slain a man to my wounding, And a young man to my hurt.” Instances perpetually occur in the Sagas: Grettir, Egil, Skarphedin, are always singing. In Kidnapped, Mr. Stevenson introduces “The Song of the Sword of Alan,” a fine example of Celtic practice: words and air are beaten out together, in the heat of victory. In the same way, the women sang improvised dirges, like Helen; lullabies, like the lullaby of Danae in Simonides, and flower songs, as in modern Italy. Every function of life, war, agriculture, the chase, had its appropriate magical and mimetic dance and song, as in Finland, among Red Indians, and among Australian blacks.

I understand that there's infinitesimally little chance that I'll ever see it staged, alas, and that even Ibsen is out of theatrical fashion these days, and yet if I were a theater manager, I'd give it a whirl. It's quite obviously modeled on Ibsen, but it doesn't suffer from that! In fact, it's damned good "Ibsen" -- and since English was Joyce's tongue, it reads more naturally than most of the translations of Ibsen from Norwegian. The dialogue is supple, the characterizations quite subtle, and the "social themes" are well and slyly embedded in the drama. The language reminds me of the delicacy of Joyce's short stories in Dubliners. "Exiles" isn't a melodrama, it isn't preachy or verbose like GB Shaw, and it doesn't belabor itself like Eugene O'Neill. And it doesn't "end" with all questions answered. What's not to like???I'm not going to reveal the plot or the themes.
