Welcome from Chris Gorse Welcome to the Inaugural Sustainable Ecological, Engineering Design for Society Conference. It is a privilege to have seen the contributions from across the globe and the expert led knowledge that is now contained in our SEEDS-2015 conference proceedings. The work is varied and rich, bringing a multifaceted approach to addressing the challenges of sustainability. From the small to large research projects that have been reported, all bring valuable contributions to improve sustainability and reduce negative impacts; all are essential in tackling the immediate and foreseeable challenges. It has been encouraging to see the interest from well establish experts and those embarking on new research journeys. The established bringing their authoritative knowledge and proven methods and the new, with unhindered imagination and open minds, contributing a different approach to innovation and research. By bringing the different perspectives together we should generate new avenues of research that could and hopefully will secure the positive change needed. The energy of the new and the chartered knowledge of the experienced are both required to achieve the change to address sustainability and ensure future generations benefit from the ecosystem that currently supports us. It is a pleasure that both those at the top and start of their careers have come together as part of the SEEDS community. We are very honoured by the high quality of professionals and academics that have joined our International Scientific Committee. The Committee was drawn from leading experts across the globe with eminent figures from Australia, USA, China, South Africa, Russia and Europe; all are to be commended on their contributions to the reviewing process. The time for submission was demanding for both the authors and reviewers and we’re grateful for all of the contributions. This year’s SEEDS conference focused its attention on key sustainability topics, particularly exposing applied research, technology and innovation that are having a positive impact on society and the built environment. From the work presented, knowledge gained and shared we believe this will help to take the whole sustainability agenda forward. It’s also very encouraging that so many industrial partners are interested in the conference. The examples of research being led by industry show how serious the concerns are and how important and immediate the sustainability concerns have become for the whole community. The engagement between academics, industry and the broader community is essential if we are to embrace the level of change needed. 2 The International SEEDS Conference Scientific Committee 2015 Professor Rajendra Akerkar, MSc, PhD Professor in Information Technology. Rajendra’s research focuses on application of big data methods to real-world challenges, and social media analysis in a wide set of semantic dimensions. Luleå University of Technology, Sweden Doctor Pedro Pablo Cardoso Castro, PhD Pedro Pablo gained a BA in Marine Biology from the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University (Colombia). After working in research for a couple of years he got his title as Merchant Marine Officer and finished his MSc in Environmental Auditing and Business Planning at the Center for Ecological Studies in Malaga (Spain). In 2005 he was lecturing at MSc and MBA programs, leading a research team exploring the internationalization of Hi- Tech SMEs. Since 2012 he has been working as Senior Lecturer at the Leeds Beckett University leading research in Hi-Tech business and the use of complexity in Management. His interests are concentrated in the applications of Organizational Cybernetics, Sustainability, Innovation, Technology Management, Dynamic Networks and the study and development of Management Systems inspired in Co-evolving and Transition Management principles. Richard coordinates a consortium of educators in the State of Utah in web-based curriculum development. Courses taught by Richard are solid modelling and innovative design. Southern Utah University, United States of America 3 Professor Mohammad Dastbaz Professor Mohammad Dastbaz is Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology and Professor of Informatics at Leeds Beckett University. Professor Dastbaz’s main research work over the recent years has been focused on the use and impact of emerging technologies in society, particularly learning, training and the development of “eGovernment”. Mohammad has led EU and UK based funded research projects and has been the Symposium Chair of Multimedia Systems in IEEE’s Information Visualisation (IV) conference since 2002. He has over 50 refereed publications. His latest publication includes two edited collections titled: “Green Information Technology: A Sustainable Approach” and “Building Sustainable Futures: Built Environment and Design”. Professor Dastbaz is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and UK’s Higher Education Academy as well as the professional member of ACM and IEEE’s computer society. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Jean-Philippe leads research at the Research Centre for Automatic Control into performance evaluation, green IT, QoS with dependability and sustainability, networked control systems, real-time networking as well as wireless communications. University of Lorraine, France Professor Jacqueline Glass, BA Hons, Dip Arch, Dip BRS, PhD, FHEA, MCIOB Associate Dean Enterprise and Professor in Architecture and Sustainable Construction. Jacqueline is Director of the Centre for Innovative and Collaborative Construction Engineering, and her research specialism is in responsible and ethical sourcing in construction. Gledson, BSc(Hons), ICIOB, PG Cert, FHEA Senior Lecturer in Construction Project Management, Civil Engineering and Building Design Management and BIM. Northumbria University, United Kingdom Doctor David Glew, BSc, MSc, PHD David is a Researcher in the Centre of the Built Environment in the Leeds Sustainability Institute with particular interest in domestic retrofit, the performance gap and in-use energy monitoring in dwellings and commercial properties. Leeds Beckett University, United Kingdom Professor Anatoliy Gorbenko, PhD, Dr.Sc. Dean for Aircraft Radio-technical Faculty and a Professor with the department of Computer Systems and networks. Anatoliy leads the Service-Oriented Systems Dependability research group. His expertise includes dependability of Internet, SOA and Clouds; system vulnerability and intrusion-tolerance; green software and wireless communications. (2018) Abstract: The increasing emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and carbon oxide (collectively referred as C1 compounds) are likely to configure a major contribution to global warming and other envi- ronmental issues. The implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) is considered a crucial strategy to prevent global warming, but the overall costs of currently available CCS technologies are still prohibitive for its large-scale deployment. Using microorganisms capable of assimilating C1 com- pounds for producing value-added products could be an important driver for mitigating emissions and minimizing their deleterious consequences, while simultaneously deriving additional economic benefits from these compounds. Lignocellulosic biomass can be gasified to produce syngas, which is a gas mixture consisting mainly of H2, CO, and CO2. The major challenge of biomass gasification is the syngas’s final quality. Consequently, the development of effective syngas clean-up technologies has gained increased interest in recent years. Furthermore, the bioconversion of syngas components has been intensively studied using acetogenic bacteria and their Wood–Ljungdahl pathway to produce, among others, acetate, ethanol, butyrate, butanol, caproate, hexanol, 2,3-butanediol, and lactate. Nowadays, syngas fermentation appears to be a promising alternative for producing commodity chemicals in comparison to fossil-based processes.

    MIT 150 | Anant Agarwal INTERVIEWER: It's Friday, August 28th, 2015. I'm Chris Boebel and I'm here at MIT with Anant Agarwal. Anant is a pioneer in computer architecture and a professor of electrical engineering at MIT. He's also the founding CEO of edX. The online learning destination established in 2012 is a joint partnership by MIT and Harvard. Anant taught the very first edX course from MIT on circuits and electronics which drew 155,000 students from 162 countries. He has also served as the director of CSAIL, the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT. Anant is also an entrepreneur. He has co-founded and led the development of a number of successful companies, including Tilera, Virtual Machine Works, and Oxygen. Anant has received multiple recognitions for his teaching and research. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the Association of Computer Machinery. He holds a Ph.D from Stanford University and a bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. So welcome, Anant. Thanks for coming today. Thanks for sitting down with us. INTERVIEWER: So in reading your biography, your life story, it's fascinating that there are these two threads that sort of come together, this sort of thread of education and an interest in education. And then, of course, electrical engineering and computer science. And I'm wondering about the origin story for that.
