Summary Report Online Learning and the Future of Residential Education: Summit Summary Report Online Learning and the Future of Residential Education March 3 & 4, 2013 In March 2013, Harvard and MIT, with the support of the University of California Berkeley, hosted a summit on innovations in online learning and their implications for the future of residential education. The summit was a response to the urgent need to come together as a community and to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities that face residential campuses in light of the recent developments in online learning technologies. The discussions that emerged from the summit are published in this summit report. This report includes summaries of keynote speeches delivered at the conference, as well as speaker profiles. Additional transcripts of keynote lectures and panel discussions, presentations, web and video resources, and articles by panel participants can be found on the Summit website at onlinelearningsummit.org. These resources generated from the summit are part of a larger effort by Harvard and MIT to advance practices and ideas that will improve the student learning experience on residential campuses for years to come. (2018) Abstract: The increasing emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and carbon oxide (collectively referred as C1 compounds) are likely to configure a major contribution to global warming and other envi- ronmental issues. The implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) is considered a crucial strategy to prevent global warming, but the overall costs of currently available CCS technologies are still prohibitive for its large-scale deployment. Using microorganisms capable of assimilating C1 com- pounds for producing value-added products could be an important driver for mitigating emissions and minimizing their deleterious consequences, while simultaneously deriving additional economic benefits from these compounds. This review summarizes the main microorganisms and metabolic routes being investigated, with special focus on both the products targeted and the current industrial initiatives. Lignocellulosic biomass can be gasified to produce syngas, which is a gas mixture consisting mainly of H2, CO, and CO2. The major challenge of biomass gasification is the syngas’s final quality. Consequently, the development of effective syngas clean-up technologies has gained increased interest in recent years. Furthermore, the bioconversion of syngas components has been intensively studied using acetogenic bacteria and their Wood–Ljungdahl pathway to produce, among others, acetate, ethanol, butyrate, butanol, caproate, hexanol, 2,3-butanediol, and lactate. Nowadays, syngas fermentation appears to be a promising alternative for producing commodity chemicals in comparison to fossil-based processes. -

MIT 150 | Anant Agarwal INTERVIEWER: It's Friday, August 28th, 2015. I'm Chris Boebel and I'm here at MIT with Anant Agarwal. Anant is a pioneer in computer architecture and a professor of electrical engineering at MIT. He's also the founding CEO of edX. The online learning destination established in 2012 is a joint partnership by MIT and Harvard. Anant taught the very first edX course from MIT on circuits and electronics which drew 155,000 students from 162 countries. He has also served as the director of CSAIL, the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT. Anant is also an entrepreneur. He has co-founded and led the development of a number of successful companies, including Tilera, Virtual Machine Works, and Oxygen. Anant has received multiple recognitions for his teaching and research. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the Association of Computer Machinery. He holds a Ph.D from Stanford University and a bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. So welcome, Anant. Thanks for coming today. Thanks for sitting down with us.
