Given annually since 1988 in honor of the late Bernard Malamud, this award recognizes a body of work that demonstrates excellence in the art of short fiction. The announcement was made today by the directors of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, Robert Stone and Susan Richards Shreve, Co-Chairs. George Saunders is an acclaimed essayist and author of novellas, but he is best known for his energetic, inventive, and deeply humane short stories. In the words of Alan Cheuse, a member of the Malamud Award Committee, “Saunders is one of the most gifted and seriously successful comic short story writers working in America today. And his comedy, like most great comedy, is dark. George Saunders is the real thing, the successor to such dark comedians of ordinary speech as Donald Barthelme and Grace Paley. He's a Vonnegutian in his soul and, paradoxically, a writer like no one but himself.” This singular writing voice is equal parts hilarious and compassionate, merging colloquial language with technocratic jargon, surreal futuristic landscapes with everyday homes and yards, foreboding undercurrents with sparks of enormous optimism. The first of Saunders’s four published story collections, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, arrived in 1996 and moved Thomas Pynchon to describe Saunders as, “An astoundingly tuned voice—graceful, dark, authentic, and funny—telling just the kinds of stories we need to get us through these times.” His most recent collection, Tenth of December, was published to near universal acclaim in January of 2013 and inspired a New York Times Magazine cover story titled, “George Saunders Has Written the Best Book You’ll Read This Year.” Charles Yu, reviewing it in the L.A. -

PAST, PRESENT, AND MEMORY The Ambivalence of Tradition in the Short Stories of Alistair MacLeod Pat Byrne Memorial University of Newfoundland The editor of a small collection of essays published in 2001 stated in her introduction that “the essays in this book explore the hold on the heart that is Alistair MacLeod’s writing” (Guilford 2001: 9). The honours and awards, both national and international, that have been bestowed on MacLeod’s work suggest that his writing has indeed touched many a heart, and that fact alone seems to have introduced a note of uncertainty or disquietude among some critics. One gets a sense that, despite the recognition MacLeod has received in recent years, his writing is seen by some as not quite in step with the times, and, because he has not produced a prodigious quantity of work, he can’t be considered in the same league as today’s literary superstars. John Ditsky took a swipe at this attitude as early as 1988 when he wrote: Perhaps it is ironic that MacLeod’s fiction is to be first published in book form in the U. S. by the Ontario Review Press run by Joyce Carol Oates and her husband Ray Smith, when one considers the disparity between the prolific Oates — often absurdly disparaged for just that trait — and the comparatively plodding MacLeod, Oates’s onetime University of Windsor colleague. Likely, she simply appreciates the distinctive qualities of MacLeod’s stories (2). Similarly, Jane Urquhart, in her own very positive commentary on the stories in As Birds Bring Forth the Sun and Other Stories, noted that MacLeod’s stories “have been called .. -

Abstract Sentiment analysis has taken on various machine learning ap- proaches in order to optimize accuracy, precision, and recall. However, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neu- ral Networks (RNNs) account for the context of a sentence by using previous predictions as additional input for future sentence predictions. Our approach focused on developing an LSTM RNN that could perform binary sentiment analysis for positively and negatively labeled sentences. In collaboration with Mariam Salloum, I developed a collection of programs to classify individual sentences as either positive or negative. -

Her recently released biography on Tom Sizemore, By Some Miracle I Made It Out of There (Simon & Schuster, 2013), also focuses heavily on the actor’s addiction. The Other Father in Barack Obama’s Dreams from my Father Robert Kyriakos Smith and King-Kok Cheung Much has been written about the father mentioned in the title of Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father (1995), the Kenyan namesake who sired and soon abandoned the forty-fourth president of the United States. Also well noted is Stanley Ann Dunham, Obama’s White American mother who has her own biography, entitled A Singular Woman (2011). The collated material concerning this f eeting family of three lends itself to a simple math: Black father + White mother = Barack Obama; or, Africa + America = Barack Obama. But into these equations the present essay will introduce third terms: “ Asian stepfather” and “ Indonesia.” For if Barack Obama’s biography is to be in any way summed up, we must take into account both Lolo Soetoro (Obama’s Indonesian stepfather) and the nation of Lolo’s birth, a country where Obama spent a signif cant portion of his youth. Commentators’ neglect of Lolo, especially, is a missed literary-critical opportunity we take advantage of in the following essay. The fact that the title of Obama’s memoir explicitly references only one father may be seen to compound the oversight, especially since “my father” is a position that the absentee Barack Sr. for the most part, vacates. However, “my father” is also fundamentally a function that several people in Barack Jr.’s life perform. Therefore, in a sense, the Father of Obama’s title is always already multiple, pointing simultaneously to a biological father and to his surrogates. -

Postseason Recaps, Line Scores, Stats & Records World Champions 1955 World Champions For the Brooklyn Dodgers, the 1955 World Series was not just a chance to win a championship, but an opportunity to avenge five previous World Series failures at the hands of their chief rivals, the New York Yankees. Even with their ace Don Newcombe on the mound, the Dodgers seemed to be doomed from the start, as three Yankee home runs set back Newcombe and the rest of the team in their opening 6-5 loss. Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3. -
