Semper Fidelis Award JULIAA.STEWART

Julia A. Stewart, a nearly 40-year veteran of the restaurant industry, serves as chairman and CEO of DineEquity, Inc. DineEquity is the world’s largest full-service restaurant company, franchising and operating restaurants under the Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar and IHOP Restaurant brands.

Since joining the Company in December 2001, Ms. Stewart has demon- strated proven expertise and leadership in brand revitalization and brand positioning. Beginning in 2001, she implemented significant shifts in strategy that resulted in revitalizing the IHOP brand, strengthening its franchising position and improving the overall financial performance of the business. As a result, IHOP system-wide sales have more than doubled over the past ten years via robust franchise restaurant development and the improved performance of existing franchised IHOP restaurants. IHOP is now the market share leader in family dining.

In 2007, Ms. Stewart led the acquisition of Applebee’s International, Inc., creating the world’s largest full service restaurant company with nearly 3,500 locations. Ms. Stewart is utilizing a focused, strategic, consumer-centric brand evaluation and revitalization process, similar to the one successfully employed at IHOP, to restore Applebee’s to the leadership position in casual dining. From enhanced marketing and service initiatives to menu innovation and improved restaurant ambience and décor, Applebee’s is being positioned to effectively differ- entiate itself among the competitive set and regain sustainable system momentum. Ms. Stewart also believes that franchising provides the company with a unique competitive advantage, as such, Applebee’s plans to franchise the vast majority of company-operated restaurants.

Prior to joining DineEquity, Mrs. Stewart served as President of the domestic division of Applebee's Interna- tional, Inc. Before Applebee's, Ms. Stewart held several key executive positions with Taco Bell Corporation, including National Vice President of Franchise and License and Western Region Vice President of Operations. Over a 15-year period prior to Taco Bell, she held various key marketing positions with Stuart Anderson's Black Angus/Cattle Company Restaurants, Spoons Grill & Bar, Burger King Corp. and Carl's Jr. Restaurants.

Ms. Stewart is a founding member of the Women’s Foodservice Forum and the recipient of numerous industry awards, serves on the Board of Directors of Avery Dennison, is a member of the UCLA Anderson School of Business Board of Visitors, and serves on the Board of Directors of Children’s Bureau of Southern California. Ms. Stewart and her family reside in the area.

The United States Marine Corps ABRIEFHISTORY

On , 1775, the met in and passed a resolution stating that “two of be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea, these first Marines distinguished themselves in a number of important operations, including their first amphibious raid into in March 1776, under the command of Captain (later Major) Samuel Nicholas. Nicholas, the first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines, remained the senior Marine officer throughout the and is considered to be the first Marine Commandant.

Following the Revolutionary War and the formal re-establishment of the Marine Corps on 11 July 1798, Marines saw action in the quasi-war with , landed in , and took part in many opera- tions against the Barbary pirates along the “Shores of Tripoli.” Marines participated in numerous naval opera- tions during the , as well as participating in the defense of Washington at Bladensburg, , and fought alongside in the defeat of the British at New Orleans.

During the Mexican War (1846-1848), Marines seized enemy seaports on both the Gulf and Pacific coasts. A of Marines joined General Scott’s army at Pueblo and fought all the way to the “Halls of Montezuma,” Mexico City. Marines also served ashore and afloat in the Civil War (1861-1865). Although most service was with the Navy, a battalion fought at Bull Run and other units saw action with the blockading squadrons and at Cape Hatteras, New Orleans, Charleston, and Fort Fisher.

In the Marine Corps distinguished itself on the battlefields of France as the 4th Marine Brigade and earned the title of “Devil Dogs” for heroic action during 1918 at Belleau Wood, Soissons, St. Michiel, Blanc Mont, and in the final Meuse-Argonne offensive. Marine aviation, which dates from 1912, also played a part in the war effort, as Marine pilots flew day bomber missions over France and Belgium. More than 30,000 Marines had served in France and more than a third were killed or wounded in six months of intense fighting.

During World War II, the Marine Corps demonstrated its abilities for amphibious warfare as was proven first on Guadalcanal, then on Bougainville, Tarawa, New Britain, Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Saipan, Guam, Tinian, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. By the end of the war in 1945, the Marine Corps had grown to include six divisions, five air wings, and supporting troops. Its strength in World War II peaked at 485,113. The war cost the Marines nearly 87,000 dead and wounded and 82 Marines had earned the Medal of Honor.

ttt $$$$$$$ $$$$$$$

In the years that followed World War II, the Corps concentrated on attaining a “vertical envelopment” capability through the use of helicopters. Landing at Inchon, Korea in September 1950, Marines proved that the doctrine of amphibious assault was still viable and necessary. After the recapture of Seoul, the Marines advanced to the Chosin Reservoir only to see the Chinese Communists enter the war. After years of offen- sives, counter-offensives, seemingly endless trench warfare, and occupation duty, the last Marine ground troops were withdrawn in March 1955. More than 25,000 Marines were killed or wounded during the Korean War.

The landing of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade at Da Nang in 1965 marked the beginning of large-scale Marine involvement in Vietnam. By summer 1968, after the enemy’s Tet Offensive, Marine Corps strength in Vietnam rose to a peak of approximately 85,000. The Marine withdrawal began in 1969 as the South Vietnamese began to assume a larger role in the fighting; the last ground forces were out of Vietnam by June 1971. The Vietnam War, longest in the history of the Marine Corps, exacted a high cost as well with over 13,000 Marines killed and more than 88,000 wounded.

THEUNITEDSTATESMARINECORPS-ABRIEFHISTORY

In August 1982, Marine units landed at Beirut, Lebanon, as part of the multi-national peace-keeping force. For the next 19 months these units faced the hazards of their mission with courage and professionalism. In October 1983, Marines took part in the highly successful, short-notice intervention in Grenada. As the decade of the 1980s came to a close, Marines were summoned to respond to instability in Central America. Operation Just Cause was launched in Panama in December 1989 to protect American lives and restore the democratic process in that nation.

Less than a year later, in August 1990, the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait set in motion events that would lead to the largest movement of Marine Corps forces since World War II. Between August 1990 and January 1991, some 24 infantry battalions, 40 squadrons, and more than 92,000 Marines deployed to the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Shield. Operation Desert Storm was launched 16 January 1991, the day the air campaign began. The main attack came overland beginning 24 February when the 1st and 2d Marine Divisions breached the Iraqi defense lines and stormed into occupied Kuwait. By the morning of February 28, 100 hours after the ground war began, almost the entire Iraqi Army in the Kuwaiti theater of operations had been encircled with 4,000 tanks destroyed and 42 divisions destroyed or rendered ineffective.

Overshadowed by the events in the Persian Gulf during 1990-91, were a number of other significant Marine deployments demonstrating the Corps’ flexible and rapid response. Included among these were non- combatant evacuation operations in Liberia and Somalia and humanitarian lifesaving operations in

THEUNITEDSTATESMARINECORPS-ABRIEFHISTORY

Bangladesh, the , and northern Iraq. In December 1992, Marines landed in Somalia marking the beginning of a two-year humanitarian relief operation in that famine-stricken and strife-torn nation. In another part of the world, Marine Corps aircraft supported Operation Deny Flight in the no-fly zone over Bosnia-Herzegovina. During April 1994, Marines once again demonstrated their ability to protect American citizens in remote parts of the world when a Marine task force evacuated U.S. citizens from Rwanda in response to civil unrest in that country.

Soon after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on and Washington, D.C., Marine units deployed to the Arabian Sea and in November set up a forward operating base in southern Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2003, Iraq became a second front in the war on terrorism with Operation Iraqi Freedom. Both operations are ongoing with Marine responsibilities ranging from combat and security operations to humanitarian efforts.

Today’s Marine Corps stands ready to continue in the proud tradition of those who so valiantly fought and died at Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima, the Chosin Reservoir, and Khe Sanh, and countless other battlefields. Combining a long and proud heritage of faithful service to the nation, with the resolve to face tomorrow’s challenges will continue to keep the Marine Corps the “best of the best.”

October 29, 2011

Dear Campaign Sponsors, On behalf of the board of directors of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, we want to express our heartfelt appreciation for your generous support of the West Coast Campaign. e success of this campaign is attributable to many, but none more important than our 2011 Campaign Honorees, Julia Stewart and Dave Stockton. As our Semper Fidelis and John Wooden Sportsman award recipients, respectively, your leadership and generous commitment to the Foundation’s mission has been instrumental to our success. As a direct result, young men and women throughout America will see their dreams of a college education come true.

Since the very first scholarship was awarded in 1962, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has dedicated itself to honoring Marines by educating their children. While the sacrifice of our brave Marines and their families can never be fully repaid, helping to provide the funds necessary to grant college scholarships to their children is a profound way of saying thank you. Your investment in these young men and women is also an investment in the future of our great Nation. e recipients of these scholarships are the sons and daughters of Marines – children of the wounded, the fallen, the serving, and the honorably discharged – who embody the Marine Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment. Semper Fidelis,

General Robert Magnus USMC (Ret) Margaret Davis Chairman, Board of Directors President & CEO

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation

HISTORY

In 1962, Brigadier General Martin F. Rockmore USMC (Ret) learned of a Marine WWII Medal of Honor recipient who was financially unable to send his child to college. General Rockmore was inspired to create an organi- zation that honored Marines by empowering their children through education. After an initial fundraising event which sent that one Medal of Honor recipient’s child to college, the Scholarship Foundation grew thanks to an enormous volunteer effort. Since that time, more than 25,000 scholarships valued at more than $60 million have been given to deserving students, including more than 1,600 for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Today, the Scholarship Foundation has never been more relevant. The ever-increasing cost of a post-high school education has significantly outpaced the salary earned by military service members creating a real need for higher education financial assistance for the children of America’s Marines. These families have endured frequent, destabilizing moves, modest incomes, and in some cases, the disability or loss of a parent. They should not have to bear the burden of not knowing how they will afford post-high school educations for their children.

The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation delivers a meaningful and lasting expression of gratitude to Marine Corps families through its longstanding commitment to Honoring Marines by Educating Their Children.

MISSION

Since 19775, Marines have selflessly served America and for nearly 50 years the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has honored this service by educating their children. The privately-funded, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization provides scholarships for post-high school education to deserving sons and daughters of marines with particular attention given to children whose parent has been killed or wounded in action. Additionally, the Scholarship Foundation’s Heroes Tribute Fund provides up to $30,000 over four years to every child of a Marine or Navy Corpsman serving with the Marines who has been killed in combat since September 11, 2001.

The Students Our Campaign Supports

The Scholarship Foundation has funded more than 25,000 scholarships valued at over $65,000,000 since its inception in 1962. For the 2011-2012 academic year, nearly $5,000,000 has been awarded to 1,631 students. More than 90% of these students attend a 4- year college or university while the remaining recipients are seeking either a 2-year degree or a vocational certificate.

Of those students attending a college or university, 46% will be the first in their family to receive a bachelor’s degree. The students you support are studying in a variety of areas with a large number of them majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathe- matics. They are diverse and come from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. These young men and women attend more than 700 universities including such respected educational institutions as Harvard University, Duke University, Princeton University, Howard University, and the University of California.

Below are thank you letters received from just three of the impressive young people your donations help support.

KATHARINEMACKNIGHTLATHROP

Dear Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation,

This fall, I began my senior year of college at Chapman University, Dodge College of Film. Thanks in large part to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, I have only eight and a half months left until I walk in my cap and gown, standing tall and holding back my tears, as I receive my Bachelors degree in Television and Broadcast Journalism.

At Chapman University, I am surrounded by some of the best equipment and editing software to prepare myself for what I should expect in “the real world.” The cost of tuition at this school almost stopped me from attending. Thankfully, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation believed in me enough to put their efforts to raise money and grant me a scholarship to continue my education.

My father is a Marine and has been since I was born. He has served many tours and will be serving another one this winter. In fact, he chose to deploy early in order to make it back to see me walk. I can’t wait to begin my career and report stories, conduct interviews, and do what makes me happy; I can’t wait to jump into the real world and be forced to prove myself using everything I have learned at Chapman University.

This generous scholarship has given me strength and makes me unbelievably happy that the Foundation has that much faith in me. I will not let you down!

Sincerely, Katharine MacKnight Lathrop

NICHOLASPOPADITCH

Dear Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation,

I am proud to write this letter and express my gratitude for making possible the possibility to further my education. Through your help, a college education has gone from being a dream and aspiration to a real opportunity. I am thankful for your faith in me and I assure you that it will not be misplaced.

My entire childhood was spent on Marine bases where I was exposed to the values that the Marine Corps represents. My father, a Gunnery Sergeant, taught me how to be a well-rounded person and the value of an education. One of the values that he always stressed was the ability to overcome adversity. In 2004, my family had this value tested when my father was wounded in combat. I saw my mother, who held our family together through multiple deployments, be the strength in our home. My father would also exhibit the value of an education by going to college himself to earn a degree. Due to his hard work and dedication my father displayed success in an academic environment. It is his example that has motivated me to further my education. His intense work ethic has shown me that a college degree is obtainable.

I am attending State University and will be majoring in Civil Engineering. This scholarship allows me to be a full time student without financial issues and to focus solely on my studies. Without the scholarship, I would be unable to fulfill my dream of becoming a Civil Engineer and building struc- tures around the world that will benefit mankind. I will always carry with me the values of the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Once again, thank you for your generosity.

Sincerely, Nicholas Popaditch

ALISONSPANN

Dear Campaign Sponsor,

I would like to thank you so much for your donation to the Marine Scholarship Foundation. Your financial support has enabled me to attend college without financial worries which allows me to focus on my school work.

My father was in the Marine Corp for eight years before he joined the CIA. Some of my first memories of my family are at the Marine Corp base in Okinawa, Japan. For most of the time that my dad was alive and in my life he was a Marine. He joined the CIA when I was eight years old and he was killed in action when I was nine. Merely a month later cancer took my mother's life. I had never really thought about how I was going to get a college education because I always assumed that they would be there to help me along. I don't know where I would be without the Marine Corp Scholarship Foundation.

I am currently attending the Pepperdine University majoring in journalism with a focus on broadcast media. My ideal job would be a newscaster for Fox News, or to host a major television news broadcast.

I cannot reiterate enough how thankful I am to have received this scholarship. It is such a blessing to be able to go to school and compete at the best of my abilities.

Sincerely, Alison Spann ttt

Julia,

Congratulations on being recognized for your efforts

in supporting the endeavors to provide education to

children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen.

You have the heart of a warrior and

this award trumpets more about who you are

and what you do for others than most people realize.

Giving to those among us who give so much,

and who only ask to be appreciated for their service

in return, is commendable.

Thank you.
