After embarking on USO handshake tours in 2003, Sinise formed the “Lt. Dan Band” which now performs nearly 50 concerts a year for military bases, charities and fundraisers. Sinise serves as spokesperson for the Disabled American Veterans and the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial Foundation, and was instrumental in the fundraising efforts of the Pentagon Memorial in Washington, D.C. and photo credit: Anthony Tahlier e Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance in NYC. He also serves on the board of directors for Snowball Express, executive council for e Medal of Honor Foundation and the USO, and is an advisory board member for Hope for the Warriors.

Among his many awards, Sinise has received the Bob Hope Award for Excellence in Entertainment from the Medal of Honor Society, the Presidential Citizens Medal, the Department of Defense’s Spirit of Hope Award, and was named an honorary Chief Petty Officer by the Navy. In 2013, he received the Civic Statesmanship Award from the United States Former Members of Congress and the Easter Seals Advocacy Award.

In June 2011, Sinise launched the Gary Sinise Foundation (GarySiniseFoundation.org) as an extension of his individual efforts. Its mission is to serve and honor our nation’s defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen and build communities.

“Freedom and security are precious gifts that we, as Americans, should never take for granted,” says Sinise. “We must do all we can to extend our hand in times of need to those who willingly sacrifice each day to provide that freedom and security. While we can never do enough to show our gratitude to our nation’s defenders, we can always do a little more.” For more information, please visit GarySiniseFoundation.org

The United States Marine Corps A BRIEF HISTORY

On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and passed a resolution stating that “two Battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. is resolution established the Conti - nental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea, these first Marines distinguished themselves in a number of important operations, including their first amphibious raid into the Bahamas in March 1776, under the command of Captain (later Major) Samuel Nicholas. Nicholas, the first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines, remained the senior Marine officer throughout the American Revolution and is considered to be the first Marine Commandant.

Following the Revolutionary War and the formal re-establishment of the Marine Corps on 11 July 1798, Marines saw action in the quasi-war with France, landed in Santo Domingo, and took part in many operations against the Barbary pirates along the “Shores of Tripoli.” Marines participated in numerous naval operations during the War of 1812, as well as participating in the defense of Washington at Bladensburg, Maryland, and fought alongside Andrew Jackson in the defeat of the British at New Orleans.

During the Mexican War (1846-1848), Marines seized enemy seaports on both the Gulf and Pacific coasts. A battalion of Marines joined General Scott’s army at Pueblo and fought all the way to the “Halls of Montezuma,” Mexico City. Marines also served ashore and afloat in the Civil War (1861-1865). Although most service was with the Navy, a battalion fought at Bull Run and other units saw action with the blockading squadrons and at Cape Hatteras, New Orleans, Charleston, and Fort Fisher.

In the Marine Corps distinguished itself on the battlefields of France as the 4th Marine Brigade and earned the title of “Devil Dogs” for heroic action during 1918 at Belleau Wood, Soissons, St. Michiel, Blanc Mont, and in the final Meuse-Argonne offensive. Marine aviation, which dates from 1912, also played a part in the war effort, as Marine pilots flew day bomber missions over France and Belgium. More than 30,000 Marines had served in France and more than a third were killed or wounded in six months of intense fighting.

During World War II, the Marine Corps demonstrated its abilities for amphibious warfare as was proven first on Guadal - canal, then on Bougainville, Tarawa, New Britain, Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Saipan, Guam, Tinian, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. By the end of the war in 1945, the Marine Corps had grown to include six divisions, five air wings, and supporting troops. Its strength in World War II peaked at 485,113. e war cost the Marines nearly 87,000 dead and wounded and 82 Marines had earned the Medal of Honor.

THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS - A BRIEF HISTORY

In the years that followed World War II, the Corps concentrated on attaining a “vertical envelopment” capability through the use of helicopters. Landing at Inchon, Korea in September 1950, Marines proved that the doctrine of amphibious assault was still viable and necessary. After the recapture of Seoul, the Marines advanced to the Chosin Reservoir only to see the Chinese Communists enter the war. After years of offensives, counter-offensives, seemingly endless trench warfare, and occupation duty, the last Marine ground troops were withdrawn in March 1955. More than 25,000 Marines were killed or wounded during the Korean War.

e landing of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade at Da Nang in 1965 marked the beginning of large-scale Marine involvement in Vietnam. By summer 1968, after the enemy’s Tet Offensive, Marine Corps strength in Vietnam to a peak of approximately 85,000. e Marine withdrawal began in 1969 as the South Vietnamese began to assume a larger role in the fighting; the last ground forces were out of Vietnam by June 1971. e Vietnam War, longest in the history of the Marine Corps, exacted a high cost as well with over 13,000 Marines killed and more than 88,000 wounded.

In August 1982, Marine units landed at Beirut, Lebanon, as part of the multi-national peace-keeping force. For the next 19 months these units faced the hazards of their mission with courage and professionalism. In October 1983, Marines took part in the highly successful, short-notice intervention in Grenada. As the decade of the 1980s came to a close, Marines were summoned to respond to instability in Central America. Operation Just Cause was launched in Panama in December 1989 to protect American lives and restore the democratic process in that nation.

Less than a year later, in August 1990, the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait set in motion events that would lead to the largest movement of Marine Corps forces since World War II. Between August 1990 and January 1991, some 24 infantry battalions, 40 squadrons, and more than 92,000 Marines deployed to the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Shield. Operation Desert Storm was launched 16 January 1991, the day the air campaign began.

$• MARINE CORPS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION • $ $$$$ 2013 West Coast Campaign $$$$

THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS - A BRIEF HISTORY

e main attack came overland beginning 24 February when the 1st and 2d Marine Divisions breached the Iraqi defense lines and stormed into occupied Kuwait. By the morning of February 28, 100 hours after the ground war began, almost the entire Iraqi Army in the Kuwaiti theater of operations had been encircled with 4,000 tanks destroyed and 42 divisions destroyed or rendered ineffective.

Overshadowed by the events in the Persian Gulf during 1990-91, were a number of other significant Marine deployments demonstrating the Corps’ flexible and rapid response. Included among these were non-combatant evacuation operations in Liberia and Somalia and humanitarian lifesaving operations in Bangladesh, the Philip - pines, and northern Iraq. In December 1992, Marines landed in Somalia marking the beginning of a two-year humanitarian relief operation in that famine-stricken and strife-torn nation. In another part of the world, Marine Corps aircraft supported Operation Deny Flight in the no-fly zone over Bosnia-Herzegovina. During April 1994, Marines once again demonstrated their ability to protect American citizens in remote parts of the world when a Marine task force evacuated U.S. citizens from Rwanda in response to civil unrest in that country.

Soon after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on and Washington, D.C., Marine units deployed to the Arabian Sea and in November set up a forward operating base in southern Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2003, Iraq became a second front in the war on terrorism with Operation Iraqi Freedom. Both operations are ongoing with Marine responsibilities ranging from combat and security operations to humanitarian efforts.

THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS - A BRIEF HISTORY

Today’s Marine Corps stands ready to continue in the proud tradition of those who so valiantly fought and died at Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima, the Chosin Reservoir, and Khe Sanh, and countless other battlefields. Combining a long and proud heritage of faithful service to the nation, with the resolve to face tomorrow’s challenges will continue to keep the Marine Corps the “best of the best.”

A MESSAGE FROM The Chairman and The President

Dear Scholarship Foundation Supporters,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, thank you for your support of the 2013 West Coast Campaign. We attribute the unprecedented success of this event both to your generosity, and to the leadership of our 2013 Campaign honorees, David Pyott and the Gary Sinise Family.

Since our inception in 1962, the Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than 30,000 scholarships, valued at over $80,000,000, to the children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen. For the 2013-2014 academic year, we have awarded more than $6,600,000.00 to 2,040 students. ese awards relieve a significant burden for Marine families, particularly when a parent has been killed or wounded in combat.

Your gift is also an important investment in our Nation’s future. Approximately 89 percent of our scholarship recipients attend a 4-year college or university, and 45 percent are pursuing majors in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). e graduation rate of these students is 86 percent—more than twice the national average. is translates to a group of dedicated, hardworking students that are poised to lead America to a strong future.

In over 50 years, we have grown to become the Nation’s largest and oldest provider of need-based scholarships to military children. Our ability to meet this increasing need, year after year, is only possible with your engagement and support. Your life-changing gift makes post-high school education a reality and creates a brighter future for our Marine Corps sons and daughters—and our Nation.

ank you for Honoring Marines by Educating Their Children.

Semper Fidelis,

Lieutenant General Martin R. Steele USMC (Ret.) Margaret B. Davis Chairman, Board of Directors President and CEO

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation

HISTORY

In 1962, Brigadier General Martin F. Rockmore USMC (Ret) learned of a Marine WWII Medal of Honor recipient who was financially unable to send his child to college. General Rockmore was inspired to create an organization that honored Marines by empowering their children through education. After an initial fundraising event which sent that one Medal of Honor recipient’s child to college, the Scholarship Foundation grew thanks to an enormous volunteer effort. Since that time, more than 30,000 scholarships valued at more than $70 million have been given to deserving students, including more than 1,909 for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Today, the Scholarship Foundation has never been more relevant. e ever-increasing cost of a post-high school education has significantly outpaced the salary earned by military service members creating a real need for higher education financial assistance for the children of America’s Marines. ese families have endured frequent, destabilizing moves, modest incomes, and in some cases, the disability or loss of a parent. ey should not have to bear the burden of not knowing how they will afford post-high school educations for their children.

e Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation delivers a meaningful and lasting expression of gratitude to Marine Corps families through its longstanding commitment to Honoring Marines by Educating eir Children.

MISSION

Since 1775, Marines have selflessly served America. For more than 50 years, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has honored this service by educating their children. e privately-funded, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization provides scholarships for post-high school education and career training to all qualified deserving sons and daughters of Marines and Navy Corpsmen with particular attention given to children whose parent has been killed or wounded in action and those who have demonstrated financial need. e Scholarship Foundation’s Heroes Tribute Scholarship Program for Children of the Fallen provides up to $30,000 over four years to every child of a Marine, or Navy Corpsman serving with Marines, who has been killed in combat since September 11, 2001. $• MARINE CORPS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION • $ $$$$ 2013 West Coast Campaign $$$$

Dear Sponsor:

ank you for your donation to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Your generosity is greatly appreciated by me and my fellow scholarship recipients. Your contribution has been a great financial help to me, and has allowed me to pursue an education without going into debt.

I have spent most of my life in San Diego, California, where my father was last stationed with the Marine Corps at Miramar. My father was in the Marine Corps from the time I was born until I was 5 years old, so my earliest memories and all of my early childhood experiences involved Marine Corps life. His Marine Corps experience translated for me into a fairly structured and disci - plined atmosphere in my school work, athletics, music, and other pursuits, well after he left the Marine Corps. Excellence was expected in everything I did, not just by my parents, but by myself as well. is was certainly an outgrowth of my father’s Marine Corps experience. Since finishing his career in the Marine Corps, my father has been self-employed for 14 years, teaching PE and coaching sports. For many years his business was strong, but with the recent economic slowdown, his business has been slow as well, making the next few years of college very uncertain financially. e Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has closed the gap for my college finances and will make a significant difference for me.

I will be a junior this year at Azusa Pacific University, just east of Los Angeles. I am a business management and political science double major at Azusa Pacific, and I am also pursuing degrees in fire science and emergency management at the community college near my home during the summer. is upcoming year has a lot in store for me. In addition to my studies, I am also on the track & field team at Azusa Pacific and compete in the decathlon. is grueling two-day event requires a significant amount of practice, and requires me to be on the track for four hours each day and in the weight room for an hour each morning. On top of this, I am an Emergency Medical Technician and I will be volunteering at the local fire station and hospital, so my schedule will be very full! Without the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, I would have to work multiple jobs to stay out of debt, and would not have time to volunteer or compete in track & field for my school. is scholarship has given me the freedom to pursue an education, achieve my track goals, and serve my community without financial hardship. I hope to one day become a fire chief, and this scholarship has helped me attain the education and experience necessary to reach my goal.

ank you again for sponsoring me and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Your support benefits not only each of us individually, but our country as a whole. e background that we all share from being raised by Marine Corps families will bring our Marine Corps values, ethics, and attitude to all of the fields we enter, influencing our country for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Matthew Nash

HALEY HEISELT

Dear Sponsor:

ank you very much for selecting me to receive a scholarship for the upcoming 2013/2014 school year! Your generous scholarship will aid me in continuing my pursuit of a degree in mechanical engineering at California Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. I was thrilled upon seeing the notification that I would be receiving a scholarship from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and excited to share the news with my family! ank you so much for your support and encouragement!

I come from a family with a strong military background and history of serving their country. My grandfather Jerry served a tour in Vietnam while he was in the Army and my grandfather Leonard served on the Navy’s first nuclear powered submarine. I am particularly proud of my father for his twenty-one years of dedication and service in the United States Marine Corps. Having a father that was a Marine had a positive effect on my childhood because the Marine Corps included families at every opportunity. ere was always a company picnic, holiday party, or celebration to enjoy. One specific memory I have is learning the Marine Corps Hymn in kindergarten at Mary Fay Pendleton Elementary School on Camp Pendleton in California.

My father’s military occupation specialty was machinist (2161) and more than likely where I get most of my mechanical aptitude from. Growing up I enjoyed taking things apart and learning what made them work. is is what led me to choose to major in mechanical engineering.

is fall I will be entering my second year at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. I am working towards my goal of becoming a nuclear engineer for the . With this scholarship I will have the chance to dedicate more time to my school studies and extracurricular activities. As an executive board member of the American Indians in Science and Engineering Society, member of the Society of Women Engineers, and an advocate of Project Lead the Way, I will have the chance to promote engineering and bring awareness to the need for more women and minorities in the math, science, and engineering fields. I am excited to have the opportunity to dedicate more time to encourage our youth into pursuing engineering.

Over the summer I began an internship at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems in Redondo Beach, California where I am surrounded by top engineers in a wide variety of specialties. I am learning so much, and am certain I have made the right personal choice by choosing a career in engineering.

Receiving this scholarship is definitely a blessing that I am very grateful for. I would like to thank the members of the scholarship committee for their support in helping me to follow my dream.

Sincerely,

Haley Heiselt

NATHAN LA FONTAINE

Dear Sponsor:

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for awarding me this scholarship. For this generous scholarship, I would like to offer my sincere appreciation. College has proven too be both the most arduous and rewarding undertaking in my life. As I begin my studies as an upperclassman, I will undoubtedly face more difficult tests of time management, efficiency, and effort. This funding is going to offer me a great bit of support and relief.

I believe that I live a very blessed life, with amazing friends and family. These figures mean the most to me, and they have shaped my life. My father, a former Marine, and my brother, a current Marine, are two of the biggest influences in my life. Growing up with them, along with the rest of my family, as role models, I learned to embody certain traits of honor, responsibility, and strong moral character. These are the qualities that I strive to encompass in all aspects in my life. Furthermore, I have learned that perseverance and determination are extremely valuable characteristics to possess. I’ve learnt this both through times of seemingly endless financial struggle as I work my way through college—and times of great reward, such as making Dean’s List twice last academic year. While college is a demanding experience, I look forward to my ultimate post-graduate goals. The achievements I have already experienced push me forward to graduation, graduate school, and a successful future career.

This fall, I will be entering my third year as a student at California Polytechnic State University, in San Luis Obispo. I am an Earth Science major, with a concentration on geology. I am currently unsure what field of geology I want to pursue, but it will most likely be in the petroleum exploration or engineering fields. I am currently looking to acquire an internship with a number of different organizations that hire geoscientists, both to gain professional skills, and possess valuable experience for graduate school admissions. I am also actively searching and applying for undergraduate research opportunities with various universities and federally funded science programs. These experiences will help me choose the specialization that I will make a career of. At this point, I do intend on becoming a graduate student in either Colorado or southern California, after my time at Cal Poly. While I do still need to work my way through school, this scholarship gives me a valuable cushion of support that allows me to focus on academics. Furthermore, if my schedule allows, it will also provide more time away from work, which will allow me to participate in other enriching extracurricular activities, such as intramural sports or our school’s outdoor adventure program. Lastly, I am currently an orientation leader for the Cal Poly 2013 freshmen class, and this scholarship will allow me to devote more time to the program. As a result, I am confident I will ultimately become a better, more successful leader.

Again, I would like to offer a final thank-you for this scholarship. College has proven to be an extremely difficult, yet rewarding experience. The assistance from this scholarship is highly appreciated, and I will work as hard as I can in school to advance myself academically and professionally.

Sincerely,

Nathan La Fontaine
