Its roots, however, are much older, having begun with the ‘Christianity and Platonism’ conference at Melbourne University in 1977 organised by Eric Osborne and David Dockrill under the auspices of the Australian New Zealand Society for Theological Studies. A second conference on the theme, ‘The Via Negativa’ was held at the University of Sydney in 1981. The success of these two conferences led to a larger project that was to be a series of conferences. Its organisational base was at Newcastle University with David Dockrill and Godrey Tanner, and it was located at Catholic Institute of Sydney, firstly at Manly and after 1995 at Strathfield. Other convenors in the early years included Raoul Mortely, David Coffey, John Hill, Patrick Ryan and Gerald Gleeson. This set a pattern of cooperation between Newcastle University and Catholic Institute in organisational terms, but it also defined the dialogue as one between those academics in the universities and those in the theological colleges. Following the move of Catholic Institute of Sydney to its current premises at Strathfield at the end of 1995, the conference took its current form and incorporated also the Sydney College of Divinity conference series that had been begun by Neil Ormerod and Gregory Moses. The Convenors throughout this period have been David Dockrill (Newcastle), Peter Forrest (UNE) and Andrew Murray (CIS). Andrew Murray has been conference organiser. Although largely led by philosophers, the conference has from the beginning attempted to be broad both in its scope and in its participation. Each conference has had a theme designed to focus attention on a recognisable area of interest but also broad enough for scholars from diverse fields to participate. It has enabled philosophers, theologians and a diverse range of scholars from the arts and occasionally the sciences to contribute to the one conference. This has led to very interesting discussions, enabling connections of thought that may not otherwise have been achieved. Attendance has presumed only a serious interest in religion, good scholarship in a particular area and interest in some aspect of the theme of the current conference. This conference took the theme ‘God, Freedom and Nature’. The brief articulated in the call for papers was broad: ‘Papers may treat one or more of these themes in a manner that contributes to a discussion of the three. Issues and questions that might be addressed include: science and religion; freedom and conscience in a religious context; political and religious notions of freedom and nature; talking about God in our contemporary culture; the compatibility of religious faith and authentic humanity; the validity of religious experience; the biblical understanding of God and human development in the 21st Century; human and divine creativity; climate change: divine providence and human responsibility.’ Discussion at the conference was vigorous and broad. The convenors are grateful to the editors of this book of proceedings for making the starting points of that discussion available to many more people than could attend the conference. What is novel about this Proceedings is the originality which results from the subtle way in which the diversity of its topics is skilfully enfolded in a tolerably coherent and insightful framework of transdisciplinary perspective, thus seeking insight from beyond the conceptual boundaries which define many of the more conventional considerations of these issues. The heuristic ‘backdrop’, so to say, against which much of the systematic elucidation and analysis within which the book unfolds is strongly influenced by the increasing emergence around the globe of multicultural societies. The way in which any particular society deals with the ramifications of multiculturalism will obviously vary, depending partly upon whether the ‘host culture’ and its socio-political disposition is democratic, communist, despotic or driven by fundamentalist religiosity. Because multicultural societies are populated by people, either through ‘historical entwinement’ or policies of welcoming immigration, who not infrequently possess radically different religions, moral and political beliefs, the harmonic balance of the society and the measure of its peaceful cohabitation can be seriously challenged, as was witnessed in the Sydney 2012 riots by Muslim extremists, to name just one level of many global examples. In particular, a number of authors have framed their work around the concept of ‘sacramental ontology,’ that is, a unified vision of reality in which the secular and the religious come together, although maintaining their distinction. The authors’ choices have been criticized by their fellow colleagues as a form of apologetics and a return to integralism. The aim of this article is to provide a proper context in which to locate the phenomenon of sacramental ontology. I suggest considering (1) the generation of the concept of sacramental ontology as part of the internal dialectic of the Christian intellectual world, not as a reaction to the secular; and (2) the adoption of the concept as a protection against ontological nihilism, not as an attack on scientific knowledge. Drawing inspiration directly from the works of John Henry Newman, this document not only affirmed the insights found in his Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine (1845), which church authorities embraced during the first decade of New- man’s life as a Catholic, but also his provocative Rambler article, “On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine” (1859), which resulted in episcopal accusations of heresy and Newman’s delation to Rome. The tension between Newman’s theory of development and his appeal for the hierarchy to consider the experience of the “faithful” ultimately centers on the “seat” of authority, and whose voices matter. Kathleen Mulhern investigates a late-nineteenth-century deployment of the seventeenth-century thought of Blaise Pascal by French neo-Pascalians (“Pascalisants”). Pascal had never completely disappeared from the French literary scene. Seventy years after his death, he served Voltaire as a foil in the Remarques sur les Pensées de Pascal (1734); Condorcet’s edition of the Pensées (1776) was but one stage in his ever-shifting relationship with Pascal-Voltaire.[1] In the post-revolutionary Romantic period, Pascal re-appeared in 1835; a new critical edition proposed by Victor Cousin followed ten years later (1844). From the mid-century onward, Pascal’s nationalist function as the French literary genius enjoyed multiple new editions: Vinet (1848), Sainte-Beuve (1848), Havet (1852), Droz (1886), Michaut (1896), and Brunschvicg (1904) (p. 7). For the purposes of Mulhern’s story, there seems to be a missing link here between 1776 and 1835. That link is suggested by Darrin McMahon’s observation that (largely Catholic) opponents of the philosophes during the 1770s-1780s overlooked Pascal’s Jansenist associations (and Rousseau’s own philosophic position) in service of combating “rationalism.” Though clearly differing in world view, both Pascal and Rousseau “argued convincingly that the heart had reasons that reason knows not, that when left to themselves our rational faculties left us lifeless and cold, uncertain and unsure.

A. A Christian society emerges: power, wealth and corruption 1. Europe at the turn of the millennium We have seen the emergence of ‘Europe’ through the common adoption of Christianity by the peoples migrating into the western peninsula of Eurasia. Firstly the Greek and Roman peoples embraced Christianity, and the peoples absorbed into the Roman Empire, including Egyptians. Then the monastic movement starting in Egypt spread east and west, impacting Gaul, Ireland, Scotland and England, and the Celtic and Roman forms merging into the Anglo-Celtic missions of Willibrord and Boniface to reach across to the Friesians and Germans. An eastern expression, led by Cyril and Methodius, spread up from Greece among the Slavs to today’s Czech Republic. Rivalry between west (Latin) and east (Greek) had flared at times into political and ecclesiastical antagonism: attacks on icons, different calendars, celibacy, tonsures. Under Charlemagne, the Carolingian (Frankish) Empire peaked and then split up. The ongoing invasions of Magyars (Hungarians) and Vikings brought further trouble, before they too were finally Christianised around the end of the first millennium. The church’s uneasy relationship with power, begun with Constantine, continues throughout the centuries. Emperors and kings clashed with popes as to who had final authority. So while it was clear that as the second millennium began, Christianity had succeeded in becoming the accepted faith and worldview, it was also obvious that God’s Kingdom of ‘shalom’ had not been ushered in.

Boonstra This article will show how the concept of lieux de savoir as theorized by Christian Jacob University of Groningen, NL provides an intriguing framework from which to examine the interactions between [email protected] laypeople and religious professionals and the transmission of knowledge in the late medieval city, by applying it to the Collatiehuis in Gouda. Here, religious knowledge was shaped and communicated in the interaction between the Brothers of the Common KEYWORDS: Life and visiting laypeople. The separate rooms in which these interactions took spatiality; communication of place, as well as the location of the house within the city, influenced the circulation knowledge; collatio; lieux de of knowledge.
