A native of New Rochelle, New York, Calderazzo began his classical studies at age six. Improvisation came natural ly even then; long before he began any formal jazz training, the young pianist was making up variations on Mozart. Fueled by his growing interest in artists like McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane, and Chick Corea, Calderazzo visited friends at Berklee College of Music, growing close with then students Branford Marsalis, Wallace Roney, and Jeff “Tain” Watts. Calderaz zo earned his big break after jamming with legendary saxophonist Michael Brecker at a clinic. Brecker was impressed by the young pianist and offered him the piano chair in his quintet after left the group in 1987. Just over ten years later, Calderazzo joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet, repl acing Kirkland a second time after the pianist’s untimely passing. Calderazzo recorded three albums for in the early 1990s, “In The Door”, “To Know One”, and “The Traveler”, also releasing “Secrets” on Audioquest and “” on before signing to Branford’s record label in 2002 where he released “Haiku” and “Amanecer” in 2003 and 2007 respectively. Calderazzo’s co-leader credits include 2011’s duo with Marsalis, “Songs of Mirth and Melancholy”. Joey’s debut was 2013’s “Live”, a trio recording with Le Fleming and Donald Edwards. His diverse sideman recording credits include the likes of , Bob Mitzner, Bob Belden, Vincent Herring, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, and — as well as Marsalis a nd Brecker. Calderazzo currently splits his time between teaching at North Carolina Central Universit y, working with Marsalis and company, and pushing his own trio art to new heights.

The supporting Trio members are two of the finest jazz musicians from NYC - bassist Ben Wolfe and d rummer Donald Edwards. Bassist Ben Wolfe brought his own Trio to Harrisburg last year when he was a visiting artist at our 2017 Central PA Jazz Camp. He has worked with jazz legends Junior Cook, Jimmy Cobb, Dakota Staton, and the Mel Lewis Orchestra as well as performing with Harry Connick Jr. in live concerts, on TV & radio. Ben was a member of the Septet and has also recorded more than a dozen albums and soundtracks with artists including Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, , Branford Marsalis, Eric Reed, Benny Green, Carl Allen, and . While performing with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Ben accompanied jazz legends Joe Henderson, Doc Cheatham, Jon Hendricks, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Billy Higgins, among others. Also a very talented composer, he was recently awarded a grant from Chamber Music America's New Works: Creation and Presentation Program, funded through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Since his emergence in 1987, Donald Edwards has built a reputation all his own across the globe, playing with some of the finest musicians in jazz and other genres - Freddie Hubbard, Tom Harrell, , Branford Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Henry Butler, Orrin Evans, Wynton Marsalis, The Mingus Big Band, Dynasty & Orchestra, Russell Malone, , Seamus Blake, Joe Locke, and Diane Schuur. Donald became one of the most sought after drummers on the Baton Rouge/New Orleans music scene where he grew up playing music ranging from marching band, hip-hop and pop to r&b, jazz, funk and gospel music. As a result, Edwards is now called on to play many different genres of music and meets them with creative interpretation and virtuosity. Donald Edwards is among the vanguard of players on the New York scene today.

CPFJ INDUCTS ANN HERMAN INTO THE HALL OF FAME

Ann Herman - professional musician & loyal jazz fan.

ANN HERMAN was inducted into the Central PA Friends of Jazz Hall of Fame on Sunday, October 14th during the concert at the Susquehanna Museum. Ann was destined to be a musician as her father Max B. Herman was a music teacher with two studios in Harrisburg - the Harrisburg Institute of Music on 2nd Street and the Allison Hill Conservatory of Music. Her mother was also a fine pianist and played professionally for many years. Ann began playing piano in her father’s band during the Great Depression at the age of 12 and later performed with the Glenn Long Orchestra. She played professionally until age 94 - eighty-two years of gigs throughout Central PA. Ann is best known for her early Hammond B3 Organ performances and later performing on keyboards in many area venues. She could be heard at the original downtown Penn Harris Hotel, the Coral Club, and many Elks/Moose/and American Legion sites in Harrisburg, Lebanon and Lancaster. In recent years, her partner Jim Young sang and played drums with Ann - she still plays at home everyday. . An avid listener, Ann is one of the most loyal Friend of Jazz fans - attending most CPFJ events since our inception. We were also able to help her celebrate her 97th birthday at the concert. When asked what helped her reach the age of 97, she said, “I always listen to my inner spirit and trust my faith, and play music everyday. I have two angels to help me, too. Jim and my daughter Lana. You have to have people that love you and care for you by your side.” . We are proud to welcome Ann to the Hall of Fame and wish her many more years of great music and love! Eric Reed – Christmas Blues Album: MoJazz Christmas Album

Do you celebrate Christmas? When it comes to this track, that question is actually quite irrelevant, because it is not a Christmas song at all. Rather, it is a rollicking blues that Ramsey Lewis wrote for his 1961 album Sound of Christmas. (If you do celebrate Christmas, or just like Christmas music, that album is one of my all- time favorites). Yes, the original Ramsey Lewis Trio was pure fun, and the way they managed to include some of their usual groove on a Christmas album was to put some sleigh bells into the mix and swing away! Hence was born one of the most unconventional and joyous Christmas tunes ever, and Eric Reed and company capture all of the festive essence of the tune on this updated version, just in time to add a bit of brightness to your winter season. Merry, baby!

JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND

Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band almost 30 years ago. Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band. There is no tuition fee and all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. The band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. All applicants are ac cepted without audition. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. A professional arranger, composer and trumpet player, he finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are schedu led year-round, including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get exp erience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they meet kids from other schools who have the same interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most high school jazz ensembles - it is not an ensemble where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Ban d welcomes all instruments - we have had almost every imaginable instrument - cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in previous bands. COME JOIN THE FUN!! Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email at [email protected] 11.
