J O E Y C A L D E R A Z Z O T R I O S U N D A Y N O V E M B E R 4 T H 3 P M WITF Public Media Center A native of New Rochelle, New York, Calderazzo began his classical studies at age six. Improvisation came natural ly even then; long before he began any formal jazz training, the young pianist was making up variations on Mozart. Fueled by his growing interest in artists like McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, Calderazzo visited friends at Berklee College of Music, growing close with then students Branford Marsalis, Wallace Roney, and Jeff “Tain” Watts. Calderaz zo earned his big break after jamming with legendary saxophonist Michael Brecker at a clinic. Brecker was impressed by the young pianist and offered him the piano chair in his quintet after Kenny Kirkland left the group in 1987. Just over ten years later, Calderazzo joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet, repl acing Kirkland a second time after the pianist’s untimely passing. Calderazzo recorded three albums for Blue Note Records in the early 1990s, “In The Door”, “To Know One”, and “The Traveler”, also releasing “Secrets” on Audioquest and “Joey Calderazzo” on Columbia Records before signing to Branford’s Marsalis Music record label in 2002 where he released “Haiku” and “Amanecer” in 2003 and 2007 respectively. Calderazzo’s co-leader credits include 2011’s duo with Marsalis, “Songs of Mirth and Melancholy”. Joey’s Sunnyside Records debut was 2013’s “Live”, a trio recording with Le Fleming and Donald Edwards. His diverse sideman recording credits include the likes of Arturo Sandoval, Bob Mitzner, Bob Belden, Vincent Herring, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, and Jerry Bergonzi — as well as Marsalis a nd Brecker. Calderazzo currently splits his time between teaching at North Carolina Central Universit y, working with Marsalis and company, and pushing his own trio art to new heights. The supporting Trio members are two of the finest jazz musicians from NYC - bassist Ben Wolfe and d rummer Donald Edwards. Bassist Ben Wolfe brought his own Trio to Harrisburg last year when he was a visiting artist at our 2017 Central PA Jazz Camp. He has worked with jazz legends Junior Cook, Jimmy Cobb, Dakota Staton, and the Mel Lewis Orchestra as well as performing with Harry Connick Jr. in live concerts, on TV & radio. Ben was a member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and has also recorded more than a dozen albums and soundtracks with artists including Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, Marcus Roberts, Branford Marsalis, Eric Reed, Benny Green, Carl Allen, and Diana Krall. While performing with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Ben accompanied jazz legends Joe Henderson, Doc Cheatham, Jon Hendricks, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Billy Higgins, among others. Also a very talented composer, he was recently awarded a grant from Chamber Music America's New Works: Creation and Presentation Program, funded through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Since his emergence in 1987, Donald Edwards has built a reputation all his own across the globe, playing with some of the finest musicians in jazz and other genres - Freddie Hubbard, Tom Harrell, Kurt Elling, Branford Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Henry Butler, Orrin Evans, Wynton Marsalis, The Mingus Big Band, Dynasty & Orchestra, Russell Malone, Dave Holland, Seamus Blake, Joe Locke, and Diane Schuur. Donald became one of the most sought after drummers on the Baton Rouge/New Orleans music scene where he grew up playing music ranging from marching band, hip-hop and pop to r&b, jazz, funk and gospel music. As a result, Edwards is now called on to play many different genres of music and meets them with creative interpretation and virtuosity. Donald Edwards is among the vanguard of players on the New York scene today. The Vibe is published monthly at the Central PA Friends of Jazz - 5721 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg PA 17 112 2. CPFJ INDUCTS ANN HERMAN INTO THE HALL OF FAME Ann Herman - professional musician & loyal jazz fan. ANN HERMAN was inducted into the Central PA Friends of Jazz Hall of Fame on Sunday, October 14th during the concert at the Susquehanna Museum. Ann was destined to be a musician as her father Max B. Herman was a music teacher with two studios in Harrisburg - the Harrisburg Institute of Music on 2nd Street and the Allison Hill Conservatory of Music. Her mother was also a fine pianist and played professionally for many years. Ann began playing piano in her father’s band during the Great Depression at the age of 12 and later performed with the Glenn Long Orchestra. She played professionally until age 94 - eighty-two years of gigs throughout Central PA. Ann is best known for her early Hammond B3 Organ performances and later performing on keyboards in many area venues. She could be heard at the original downtown Penn Harris Hotel, the Coral Club, and many Elks/Moose/and American Legion sites in Harrisburg, Lebanon and Lancaster. In recent years, her partner Jim Young sang and played drums with Ann - she still plays at home everyday. An avid listener, Ann is one of the most loyal Friend of Jazz fans - attending most CPFJ events since our inception. We were also able to help her celebrate her 97th birthday at the concert. When asked what helped her reach the age of 97, she said, “I always listen to my inner spirit and trust my faith, and play music everyday. I have two angels to help me, too. Jim and my daughter Lana. You have to have people that love you and care for you by your side.” . We are proud to welcome Ann to the Hall of Fame and wish her many more years of great music and love! • Press Release for Fatherhood
Stalwart bassist Ben Wolfe is proud to announce the August 30th release of his new album, Fatherhood - a heartfelt body of work which pays tribute to the bassist’s father, Dan Wolfe who passed away in 2018. This ten-track collection of nine originals and one cover also serves as a meditation on what it means for Ben to be a father to his own son, Milo. With Fatherhood, the bassist and composer made a conscious decision to step off the fast lane for a moment and make music of introspection and mourning. “I made this record in ways I knew my father would have encouraged” - that meant choosing the best studio, the best musicians, self-funding the entire project, and making wise decisions throughout. Ben is thrilled to have this record brought to fruition by a collection of both familiar collaborators and young phenoms - the bassist is joined by trumper Giveton Gelin, saxophonists Immanuel Wilkins, Ruben Fox, JD Allen, trombonist Steve Davis, pianists Luis Perdomo and Orrin Evans, vibraphonist Joel Ross and drummer Donald Edwards. As on two previous recording sessions, Ben drafted the Grammy- nominated violinist Jesse Mills to put together a stellar string quartet, which features Mills alongside Goergy Valtchev on violin, Kenji Bunch on viola and Wolfram Koessel on cello. Mindful of his father’s judicious approach to performance, Ben surmises that “this record is about the overall sound of the ensemble.” Ben and his dad experienced the customary roller coaster ride typical of father-son relationships, but in music they forged their deepest bonds. A former violinist who spent a season with the San Antonio Symphony, Dan Wolfe raised his son to love all sorts of music.

These two words summon the affirmation and arc of intention, and the meaning and values at the core of Wynton Marsalis’s oeuvre, a small sample of which is contained on this two-disc set. When you listen, other words will bubble to the surface, other metaphors and images will arise. Nouns like “America” – rural to city, farming to high-tech, white and black and the spectrum of colors of the spiral rainbow –will be evoked. Marsalis’s music also registers an emotional spectrum, from the sensual slow drags to the in-the-pocket mid-tempos to the high-velocity-jet swing. You’ll also find down-home timbres, horns with bite and sass, plus strings that sing and sting with a fiddler’s edge.
